iPhone 5 + iOS 6 Catch-All

I just tried the panoramic picture inside my office and it did a pretty decent job. I did notice that lines were staggered a bit here and there (especially on near the edges) but maybe the morning coffee had something to do with that.

Dang. I hadn't even thought of that. Now, I'm disappointed again. :(

You think this would be a high priority thing considering how much media coverage there is against looking at your phone (texting) while driving. Turning on BT is something I was able to do with my feature phones years ago with a single button push. Also my jail broken 3G could do it just fine.

I am still going to use Google Maps when they release it.

If Apple approves it. The magic words 'duplicates core functionality' may be invoked.

I think that ship has sailed. There's tons of media players, browsers and email clients already in the app store.

Also, it looks as though Microsoft is going to have allow a browser ballot in Windows 8 (in the EU at least) so they will have to allow different default browsers. I think Apple needs a little pressure to allow different default browser and email clients also.

I still want a fantastic iPad YouTube app. This upscaled phone thing can be a holdover, but...

I had disabled iMessage on IOS5 because it was so buggy. Me and all my iPhone using friends would get extremely delayed messages, duplicate messages, or never receive anything at all. The update auto enabled it and so far it seems like they may have fixed the bugs.

Why not just use Safari? In other words, what does that app do that the website doesn't do for you?

Hey Somer I just realized it says IOS 5 in the title. Can you change it? I realize its from last year's 4S but makes sense to just post here.

I don't think Steve would have allowed that to go out the door.

I use Navigon most of the time. It lets you download maps so you can navigate off-grid, and does all the usual Garmin stuff. About the only issue I have with it is that its search feature is weak, so a lot of time I found myself searching for a location in Google Maps, adding the destination as a contact, and pulling that up in Navigon to route to it. If Navigon can sort out its search functionality I'll never leave the app. One of the coolest things about Navigon is that if I leave the route it picked it will dynamically re-route based on where I am, so if I take a few turns I know will be faster I don't have to mess with my phone to get the rest of the route fixed.

I've never liked the design of the youtube mobile site (even less so more recently), and miss the quick- and native-navigation that an app provides.

I use Navigon too. There is a built in Google search option in the menus somewhere. I've always been a huge fan of the app. It was the first sat nav app on the store and is still the best for me.

I put iOS6 on my iPad 3 last night. I mucked about with Siri a lot, and found that it is really good for dictating messages and emails. The easy addition of appointments to my calendar alone makes it gold for me.

I haven't bothered putting it on my phone. I have a 4, jailbroken. My 5 will turn up soon, so I don't want to waste the time.

Heh. My first post on my first Android device (Nexus 7) is in the iOS thread!

Yep, something like Android's Intents system would be great to see on iOS.

I installed iOS 6 on my iPad 2 last night, and the whole process was relatively quick and hassle-free. I had some fun zooming around in the new Maps app -- the 3D view is really smooth and slick, and seems to look more convincing/realistic than the 3D view in Google Earth on my (Android) phone. I don't have to rely on iOS at all for navigation, though, so I'll defer to those that do when it comes to judging the actual maps themselves.

The map data that Apple switched to is basically the data that Google stopped using a few years back (Teleatlas data, now owned by TomTom).

Ah, I just found it, it's a POI search option. I've just discovered that AroundMe can launch Navigon for a destination as well, so I'll probably use that for searching most of the time. I've heard the free Yellow Pages app can as well, but haven't tried that one yet.

What surprised me is that portions of the satellite view have clouds obscuring the ground. Hopefully, they'll improve the DB as time goes on.

Contrary to all expectations, I just got an email from my network telling me that my iPhone 5 is going to be delivered at lunchtime. I was expecting a three week wait or something, since I put my order in late, when the website said that pre-orders were closed.

After standing in line since 5:30 I finally have my new phone in hand.

Hey guys, you know that phone that Apple makes? This new one is thinner, faster, and lighter. The weight is probably most notable, along with more saturated colors.

Also, just found a new iOS 6 feature: passcode lock of arbitrary length (more than 4 numbers, but still numeric so you only need the numpad).

The weight difference really is striking. I'm going through the joy of data transfer at the moment.

That's not new.

New maps app: Ugh. The lack of walking or bus route information is a killer for me, since I don't drive. Fortunately, maps.google.com in the browser works reasonably well.

Yeah, I think that if I'd done a little more research, I wouldn't have upgraded.

The other little thing that's annoying me about iOS6 is that the Podcasts app stops playing when it's in the background, and now I don't have the option to listen to podcasts through the Music app anymore.

But I'm probably also just lazy enough to not bother getting iOS5 back.

misplacedbravado wrote:

It shouldn't be doing that. I'm listening to a 'cast right now (streaming, even) in the background.

You sure? I know in iOS <= 4 you could set a text based passcode if 4 digits weren't good enough for you, but it looks like that's been altered to simply allow more digits so as to remove the full keyboard from the equation. Was this a new thing in v5?

Well, ordered my new phones direct from Verizon on the first available day. Got an order confirmation email right away with a "deliver by" date of Sept 21.

As of 8pm, no delivery. Verizon website says "order has been received and is being processed". So, no idea when my phones are going to arrive. Credit card hasn't been billed yet either. Kind of annoying, but if I have to wait a few days, I'm ok with that.

I don't believe so--I think it was in at least 4, if I recall right. If you set the passcode as all numeric, it gave you the keypad entry when unlocking. It could be it's changed to make that more explicit. What it used to do is let you enter a longer code as text with full keyboard, and then if the code was all numeric, it would prompt you with a keypad entry screen when you needed to enter the code.

Got my 5 in the mail this morning. Went to both the ATT and Apple stores today looking for an adapter but apparently there are none to be had. The apple site says they won't ship till Oct. Anyone else have this issue? I'd still like to use my SoundDock for charging.

I was hasty in recommending Navigon, it appears. I, and many others, can't download the map pack since the update, making the app entirely useless.

Gee, I wonder how that could have happened?

Malor, I finally realized your true identity:

Because Navigon's systems aren't coping with the glut of new device registrations, I should imagine. It worked just fine on my iPad running iOS 6 before the iPhone 5 came out.

Yep, I downloaded the new Navigon maps just fine on Thursday. I imagine they're seeing a surge in purchases given the new maps app.
