Miniatures Gaming (Tabletop and Board): Catch-all

So, how is Warhammer 40 K 6th Edition? I've been doing some work on my Dark Eldar just as a "get back in the swing of things" project. However, I have no idea whether the new rules are any good or not.

It's GW. The rules are never any good.

Yesterday I received my preorders for the first two Dungeon Command factions. I haven't had a chance to check it out yet but the minis seem decent. Really sh*tty packaging but nice bits is my initial review.

I pretty much despise GW and even I think that's unfair. Have you spent any time with the new ruleset?

We have 1 40k player at work (the rest of us all converted to Warmachine) and he has seemed really positive about all of the changes. I recently traded away my Tyranids for more Warmachine models, so it would be a big investment to get back in. As a result, Im still not remotely tempted.

6 hours to go on the Stonehaven Dwarven Miniatures kickstarter! They made 100x their initial goal I'm in for the Mega bundle + troll + blacksmith + t-shirt

I've spent a lot of time working directly with GW on their rulesets (specifically for Blood Bowl 4th and 5th editions). I've seen how they work. I've seen how they make rules decisions. I stand by my previous statement.

Great IPs. Terrible, terrible, rulesets.

Ok, now we actually know that important bit of info about you I don't disagree. I loved the art and the stories and found playing the game to be a boring 3 hour slog that never went my way, especially as Tyranids.

My old 40k group got so fed up with the rules that one of them actually set about making his own rules from scratch. We had a lot more fun after that.

This is their replacement for D&D Miniatures, right? Farscry and I were heavily into that game at it's peak and would still love to play it again. But how is Dungeon Command different from DDM to justify the change? How does the card mechanic (i.e. no dice) compare to the original?

If you want somethign similar to that, check out the Hirst art molds too.

Hirst is always at GenCon. I have delusions of making my daughter a big castle out of them. But this is all pre-fabbed laser cut MDF. Hirst is like a massive dirty craft project plus glue.

Good point. Yeah, the laser cut MDF is much easier.

Anything like that stateside? If I build it the armies will come to me. Then I can play with them. Like a 40k paintball park.

Neat. Thanks for posting!

Edit: Okay, went and checked this out. Laser cut MDF that locks all together with itself? This is what 40K should have to be played on. The hell ass balls... this looks awesome.

I'm not big into miniatures gaming myself, but I just found out that the brother of a friend of mine is one of two guys behind a very small, done-in-their-spare-time-while-holding-down-dayjobs miniatures accessory company in the UK, Warmill Gaming Accessories. They've been around a few years but are still small. Not trying to spam, but with it still being a newish company, I figured it might be worth dropping a link in case anyone's looking for the sort of stuff they're offering.

The emphasis of the stock range seems to be on terrain, buildings, barricades, and fixtures, and quite a bit of the terrain and building stuff is of the modular, snap together variety. Main scale is apparently geared towards use with 28mm miniatures, and thematically, there seems to be a rundown future aesthetic to everything. I'm sure they'd appreciate your inquiries and feedback if that's the sort of thing you're looking for. Extra-intriguing is that they have their own laser cutter and other fabrication equipment available and are apparently up for quoting custom jobs. The site loads a bit oddly but there's some decent photos of their offerings as well as links to some products currently in development.

Has anyone had a chance to try out the new Fantasy Flight X-Wing Miniature game?

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ed...

The reviews I'm reading are all very positive, but the price of entry is a bit steep once you get past the starter set. Looking for enablement.

That X-Wing game looks bang up my straße , but I've been burnt before.

A little late to this discussion, but my gaming group is enjoying 6th a great deal. I think its a big improvement

From what I've read, it looks like a very similar, if slightly more complicated, system to Wings of War: WW2*. Now I love that game, it's a fantastic way to recreate dogfighting and a tonne of fun to play. As for the price, WW2 fighters are my thing, so within a month of buying the starter set I had dropped almost $150 on 11 more beautiful plane models with no complaint.

Edit: I just watched FFG's video tutorial, and the fundamental mechanics are identical. X-Wings adds more fiddliness with the cards, tokens, and dice. But if you want a fast and fun dogfighting game, and prefer Star Wars to WW1/2, then I'd feel pretty confident recommending it.

*Re-published as Wings of Glory: WW2 (there're WW1 versions of both too).

The enthusiasm from friends who played it at GenCon, plus the amazing models, + the growing love of Star Wars that my daughter is exhibiting made me take the plunge. And when I dive, I dive deeeeep.

Picked up the base set + a few extra ties, x-wings, and y-wings. Pre-ordered the millennium falcon, Slave I, some Tie Avance and A-Wing fighters too.

I will hopefully get the originally released stuff today, but likely won't be able to play for a week or so (have family in town and working a lot right now). I might do an unboxing video or pics or something to share here.

Thanks for the information and recommendations. I now have 2 core sets plus a Y-Wing and Advanced Tie on the way. Looking forward to checking it out.

Ha, nice. I was just looking at the prices on Starlitcitadel.com, since I saw some whinging on BGG, and everything you got can be had for less than $100. The starter set is $35 online! And the mini prices are totally in line with Wings of Glory.

Sounds like a good deal to me. Thankfully for my wallet if I'm not that into Star Wars anymore.

Oh btw, sithcundman, you'll also want one of these (or the enhanced one).

I think the base set was ~$27 at Coolstuffinc with each extra ships around $10/per.

Update: My initial haul arrived today.

Now I'm noodling doing some concentrated playing of this and Battleship: Galaxies and doing a comparison of the two. What each does well, what each does poorly, philosophical approaches (hex movement vs. free-form table with maneuvers) and how that informs the game play, etc.

But I realize that it would take a lot of time to get the necessary play counts under my belt.

Very much looking forward to my first few plays of X-Wing though!

I've played a few games of X Wing with my sons. It is very easy to pick up, and the models look great. Getting a second set is very tempting, and then there's the Millenium Falcon. I could fall into the rabbit hole fast on this one.

I would very much like to read about this, when you are done.

I played a 2v2 game at the office last week and this scratched all the wargame itches without having to deal with all the 40K overhead. Easy to grasp rules without a bazillion exceptions, good looking models, and fast games. I'm going to pick up a set for myself and a few expansions.

Too many minis games right now!

Been playing a good bit of Mercs (squad sized near future sci fi game that feels super tactical), Malifaux (Western steampunk/Victorian Horror game) and X-Wing. I'm enjoying them all more than I ever did Games Workshop or Privateer Press games. Smaller scale games just work better in my head for some reason.

Incidentally is anyone interested in a job lot of Battlefleet Gothic minis? Got a bunch of Eldar and Ork stuff + case sitting about in desperate need of being sold off.

I'll take them off your hands, Maq. PM sent.
