XCOM: Enemy Unknown - Strategy Game - Developed by Firaxis

It's a SteamWorks game, right? Maybe they'll release additional maps and community tools.

I was worried about it too, but then I remembered Silent Storm. Those maps weren't random and the enemy distribution wasn't procedurally generated (come to think of it there weren't a whole lot of them, either) and I don't think it had an issue with replayability. I loved that game.

I think I'm going to dig out my Silent Storm disc and give that another go. I threw my arms up in disgust when out of nowhere they mixed my WWII with sci-fi and I never finished it, but I think enough time has passed and I've gotten over it. That should scatch my turn based itch for a bit.

Unless.. unless someone wants to release a demo for XCOM. That would work too. That would work just nicely.

Silent Storm on Steam Greenlight!

Blowing up a building so a guy falls through several floors was amazing. I ended up using a mod to remove all of the sci-fi stuff but it left the game horribly unbalanced.

If you can knock down all the walls in a building, you just have floors / ceilings remaining, that's something at least. But when I compare this to BGs like Earth Reborn, which has really interesting ideas and has been compared to XCOM, this loses a little lustre.

I really can't express enough how much I'd like destructible environments like in Red Faction: Guerilla, but that we can still make our own doorways is enough.

I'd recommend one of the mods that just nerfs them down to rational levels.

This is strange, because Xenonauts added collapsible buildings just a few weeks ago. Just shoot down enough walls and down it goes.

Another Trade-in deal at GMG for XCOM, now $36.99, for us that can't get better deals because of Steam's pre-order campaign.

Internal Monologue

Damn that's tempting. I don't like GMG as they were such a pain to buy from before. But they have some of the best prices. But that seems annoyingly convoluted to save a bit of money. But I love Xcom. But I hate buying the games early at a large price. But it's my birthday. Shut up no buying, you have a ton to play already. Stupid logic.

Part four of the OXM series is up:

Not quite as funny as the previous ones, but

Spoiler:

one of his rookies steps up to replace Kitkat Chunky

.

The more of OXM's playthrough I watch, the more I'm loving it.

The quick animation events are fantastic and seem to be rendered from the actual terrain. At least, I've not noticed a continuity error yet.

I don't normally name my soldiers when I play XCom, but I think I'm going to have to change that.

Rob Zacny is playing this game. Rob Zacny is now my sworn enemy. Or was, until I discovered he named a grunt after me. So it's all good.

I actually took a day off work (Friday following release) so that I can get in some serious hours. SO EXCITED!

f*cking Zacny.

Double f*cking Zacny!

Gave in and preordered. Based on what I've seen so far, as long as it's not buggy and crash-prone, I'm going to love it.

I pre-ordered at GMG thanks to their trade-in sale (thanks cyrax!). I never played the original, but I'm really looking forward to this one. Just over two weeks to go...

I played the original via a tip from Robear back in the day. We had to order from Britain for the US had not really gotten wind of how good this game was previewed to be.

I now play the original at least once a year since then (as I'm doing now...again).

This version looks awesome. My only fear is that I am no longer a PC 'current game tech' gamer. 360 is my primary 'new game' box. So I truly hope that this game translates well to the 360. (my fear is that I've not really seen one done so yet, although Full Spectrum Warrior did a okay job at tactical planning and execution).

I'm oddly grateful that recent Firaxis games have a short duration between announce date to shipping date. It will only be about 10 months since the game was announced when it finally releases. Civ 5 had a similar length (Feb-August?).

2 weeks!

Yeah, I like that. Even shorter would be good, like six months, but then again, that may have been the original target.

Quick question, do we have a group setup for this? If so, can I get an invite, if not... why have we not got a group?

I've been an xcom-style game for ios called aliens and humans. It's just missions at the moment, but theyve just submitted to apple a free update that adds ships, tech etc.

Anyway, that app makes me want to play this. But I'm very cautious about buying on launch; I realise people are excited about the game and that someone frommgwj is working at Firaxis, but we cant trust preview footage or commentary as true representation of quality.

It is hard to trust that stuff, but I never read anything that felt even close to negative or neutral feeling to it. Whoever is previewing Xcom is always excited for it after playing it. Preorders are always risky, but its just a game so it's not a big deal if it sucks.

Besides, if you are or aren't disappointed, you'll have some good material for your podcast.

Yeah every preview I've read has been basically glowing, and I trust rock paper shotgun and penny arcade. That of course is making it very hard to fight the urge to preorder. I normally wait for the price to drop a bit but damn does this make it hard....

I believe mp is only 1v1.

Maybe the PC version has a higher chance of being good than the 360 one. I read one preview that said the build for 360 had some niggly control issues - IIRC solider placement was occasionally slightly off, as was responsiveness of the dpad in the menu. But it's just one preview.

Another concern is how good the online play will be in terms of lag, connecting to people etc. That we can't tell until its out in the wild. The MP looks very cool, but I'm not sure if you can only play on dedicated MP maps or if you can take any map from the SP. Anyone have an idea?

Those video walkthru's are from the Xbox version and he doesn't mention any issues with control problems
