Interesting Kickstarter Catch-All

New rules coming out from Kickstarter.

Kickstarter is not a store

Kickstarter wrote:

It's hard to know how many people feel like they're shopping at a store when they're backing projects on Kickstarter, but we want to make sure that it's no one. Today we're introducing a number of changes to reinforce that Kickstarter isn’t a store

Wonder if this is in response to something specific or if they're trying to head off a problem in advance.

Not sure. However, worth noting that the Pebble might be slipping their original release date, and I know the Elevation Dock has had a bunch of issues with getting out the door on time (and right now they have some issue with faulty long USB cables). I think both projects were letting people buy in quantity which probably exacerbated supply/production issues. Also, these new guidelines are only for Hardware/Product Designs.

Yeah, I saw that bit which again made me wonder if there was something specific going on. I suspect they're just trying to cover themselves so when some high-profile project inevitably crashes and fails to deliver they won't have hordes of people going after Kickstarter for refunds.

I read some speculation that it's a combination of Pebble slipping its release date and concerns about the Ouya failing to deliver.

Sooooo tempting. If it was $25 for the game, an instant back. But $37 for a card game? Without rules to read?

The whole Risks & Challenges section for all projects is a nice addition for this whole it's still an idea and not a full fledged product, but the restrictions to just hardware/product design seem like that have to be in response to something. It seems very restrictive to not allow simulations and renderings for products. I guess with hardware people are making claims that are not feasible? (Buy this new wifi antenna set that will send/recieve signal anywhere in the world to your home network and it fits in your pocket!) Imagine if movies and games were't allowed to have trailers.

37 is an in-joke number of KoL. I think every KoL related Kickstarter so far has done a $37 tier.

The price is what's making me reluctant as well. I'm generally supportive of KoL stuff but I don't know if anyone in my gaming circle (aside from Demyx who recently stopped playing) would play it. I haven't watched the video yet, but the lack of rules is usually what prevents me from backing board game projects (unless it's for a game I've personally played). Video games for some reason don't usually worry me if there's no alpha or demo to try first.

Pretty interesting, though I almost missed the Kickstarter deadline (midnight EST) because I was giving it a try first.

Operation: Make Stuff

I'll let you make of this what you will.

I don't know this person's previous work, but this seems ridiculous and I'm a little surprised it was approved :/

He's a smart grad student with a smart blog. He has strong opinions about fluffy games writing and what he might deem over-emphasis on narrative elements in games.

So, Old School RPG

It looks like someone saw the success of Obsidian's Project Eternity and thought "Hey, we can do that." Though when you're talking Wizardry and Commander Keen you're further old-school than Obsidian.

Doug TenNapel (Earthworm Jim, The Neverhood, Catscratch, Creature Tech, Rat Fist) has a Sketchbook project on Kickstarter.

Also, there's the The Wrylon Robotical Illustrated Catalog of Botanical 'Bots if you like robots... which I do.

Romero would drive a Hummer.

Here's an offbeat one: Queen games is working with a small games German publisher called Spielworxx, and doing a low print run of Ruhrschifffahrt, a game that won a Hippodice award for best long game in 2011. Looks cool.

Yeah Romero at 2:48 on the Old School RPG video

I wasn't expecting that

Edit: oh and again with that hummer scene. Can't miss him. I'd been wondering what he was up to.

Probably making someone his Female Doggo or something

I love the Bogost quote.

Also: Loot Drop is not associated with Chicago Loot Drop (which is something like 2 months older.)

Mr. Card Game now has a preview copy of the rules on-line

Here's Monsters! A 2D Shooter : http://kck.st/PSIISR, A wizard has to destroy the monsters he has created.

It's got some cool retro audio and video and a neat gimmick; your health is also you ammo. You have to come closer to death the more you shoot. Only $10 for the game but he's only got a week left to get the last 10% and hit his goal.

This is for CCG players who want a good organizer system, or for board gamers who want compact and portable storage bag.

The Keep Mk.II

I'd like to encourage people to consider backing the individual Magic chambers or Great Chambers if the complete package doesn't appeal to you. They're very nice organizers even on their own, and every bit helps this project get funded.

He's actually in a relationship with Brenda, so I'm not surprised. They did a video together for the Global Game Jam this year as well.

I had been avoiding this thread because I'm trying not to back any more projects for a while. It's too easy for me to fall down a hole where I throw $5-$10 at a dozen projects. Does anyone else have this problem?

It looks like Loot Drop has renamed Old School RPG to Shaker. They also updated the combat mechanism.

Shaker wrote:

Outside of combat, you have free movement about the world of Antera, but once you have an encounter with the not-so-friendly residents of this medieval world, it’s old-school, turn-based combat.

Your party has six characters in total (your four characters and two local NPC recruits). Before combat, you are free to arrange your party as you wish in front and back ranks. The further back your characters are, the safer they will be. The closer they are to the action, the more brute-force damage they can do. Back-rank characters must have spells, long-range attacks or weapons, or special skills. All weapons and spells have specific ranges.

Sounds like what I remember from playing Wizardry. Nothing yet to make me want to pledge over $15, but it's good they're give out a little more information.

Since Tim Schafer came out with his Kickstarter in Feburary I've backed 18 projects, so yeah I might be a bit hooked on this process. I keep on wanting to step away but there always seems to interesting proposals that I want to see developed. Looking back on the projects I don't regret backing any of them.

My wallet on the other hand wishes I would just step off.

Same for me. I've backed 33 projects starting with a Weird Al tribute album way back when. I've seen returns on 10 so far, all of which met or exceeded my expectations. I'm sure I'll get bit by one of them eventually. I mean, one turned out bad, but it was my fault that I didn't read that it was US only.

Anyone have stories of bad or no returns from a project?

OreZom Trail

Oregon Trail with Zombies.... for iphone... anyone else on this one?

Also, I caved to internet buzz pressure and got on Project Eternity.

Certainly you would be interested in my marijuana cigarettes? All the cool kids are doing it!

The first one is free

Sagas of the Icelanders is a tabletop rpg about the life of Norse settlers early in Iceland's history. It's a hack of Apocalypse World, and the playtest material I've read looks very cool (I've not had a chance to play it). It does some new and interesting things with the AW system, too.

My Flint and Tinder boxer-briefs came in today and they look awesome. I plan on wearing a pair tomorrow.

You can play something (presumably) similar to this already: Organ Trail.

I got them last week and wore them all weekend and love them.

Yup, my boxers got it last week, too. My nuts have never been happier*.
