DOTA 2 Catch-all

Harry, you need to set it so more people in the group can create events.

Message me around then -- I might be up for a match depending on how much stuff I can get done at work today.

updated. I have a shoot right after work tonight, should be on for a game or 2 about 9pm.

If things are back online by then I will be around for a game.

What died?

Hard disk. I've been looking for a flimsy excuse to upgrade the whole kit anyway, and I took it. Microcenter's St Louis Park store is close by and staffed by enablers. DOTA 2 downloading now. This must be the first time I've received no DOA parts at all.

Also, may I please have an invite to the Steam group? Getting time for this game in between two jobs has been hard to arrange lately, but I can at least click an accept button.

Got my Beta Invite today. Honestly I was not a big fan of the first mod, but I like LoL. Friend me up.

friended and invited

I'm starting to get a taste for the pubs now. I'm not sure if I can go back to bot matches. Though I am really tired of people DCing. I almost managed to carry a team of 3 against 5 and then 4 with a Clinkz, but it would have been nice to get that win. At one point I was 6 levels ahead of their top player and could gank them two at a time. But then they started sticking together and I overestimated by staying power. I should have switched to harassing the lanes while they were elsewhere and forcing them to separate or not keep up.

Oh well. I'm at least starting to get a couple heroes that I am comfortable to take out into the wild. Still, only 10 matches in. Need another 100 or stop being a rank 1 newbie.

I'd love to get into the Steam Group. Just got DOTA 2 last night. Never played a DOTA game before. Is there a tutorial section in the game for total noobs? I didn't see one when messing around last night. Does the group do regular matches on certain nights?

There is no tutorial section -- I think they're still working that out.

Someone's on pretty much every night -- friending either me or Harry will get you connected to most people.

And here's a link to help fill the tutorial gap:

The guides are useful and pyrions stuff is ....some what useful and worth watching.

Hopefully we were slightly less deadweight tonight, atomic. It helped that the opposition wasn't super strong and their keeper of light was drunk - although still a pain in the ass.

Yes it was a very enjoyable game. I was happy to play with someone who actually talked a bit more. I think I finally figured out how the Protector ultimate worked by the end of that game. That puts me up to 2 hero's I feel I can use at not quite noob level (other being warlock).

Anyway thanks for the game. Fire me an invite to the group!

Being in low priority queue sucks. Especially when you had to go afk for 10 minutes in a vs bot game! TT

Been there... The 10 minutes wait for a game was really bad. Since then I left for LoL and now I get into a game in a minute or less and I didn't get smacked for my afks and abandons yet (I'm training my wife to the new schedule) . The normal wait for a DOTA 2 game if I remember correctly and (if it haven't changed ) is about 4 minutes which is kind of excessive.

My major problem with DOTA 2 games is that they usually take a long time to end. In LoL it's 20-40 minutes with the occasional 50 minute games. I'm still not that satisfied with the large game period because I can get interrupted a lot. I also have some dificulty playing certain champions in LoL. anything that require twitch reflexes can cause me trouble. I also have major problem with ability spammers .

I'm still considering to come back to DOTA2 . I can't really play much with GWJ because I live in an EU timezone . Another thing about Dota style games - I'm not that good. Sometimes my performance are satisfactory (like when I play Morgana in lol) but sometimes I simply choke and my team can barely recover the feeding.

he crowd in LoL is also mixed. Some people take the game too seriously to tolerate newbies and sometimes people are more friendly. It's totally random on blind games . I only play the game for fun so I probably won't play ranked at all. People should lower their expectations when playing normal games.

I am from EU as well and to be honest, you can play on NA servers without much trouble if they stick to US East servers. Sure, maybe you won't play some skill shot heroes to the best of your ability but it's manageable with 130 ping. I even had a game with some guys and ping was 180 and it was still doable. But maybe that's just me being slightly used to it from playing some SC2 over at NA with 180-220ping.

As for length of the games, I am surprised to read what you said. I'm level 20+ in LoL and most games only start at 20-25minute and usually take 40-50. It's a much slower game overall with a much longer laning phase and a lot of escape mechanisms, it's very hard to get kills early on with flashes, heals, free teleports, armour/regen runes, etc. Not to mention that you can't really chase because towers hit like a Female Doggo.
The only thing that helps with that is the surrender option, which I also want in DOTA 2 but as far as I've been told, Icefrog as said that they won't ever implement it in the game.

edit: typos, etc.

Ping isn't really m y problem I'm getting about 160ms now because of a temporary problem with my adsl provider which pushes my ping up another 12 ms.

My only problem is the 7 hour timezone difference. When people in the US get back from work I'm already asleep . There is no chance I'll wake up at 4am to play video games(that doesn't mean I won't wake up because of the kids ).

It's silly not to have an option to surrender . If the game is lost there is no reason to waste everyone's time. Sometimes the teams in LOL try to drag the game to get kills but I don't see the point. I want to finish the game quickly and if it lasts long I prefer the reason to would be balanced teams(more fun) and not farming kills.

As I am new, I am wondering what the update path has been. I have a couple of issues/concerns from my bot matches. The palette is limited, and so far everything looks about the same. I recall statements from Diablo 3 of why they added color. Players and creeps look the same predominantly, and I find myself just mousing over a colored bar to attack. Quality wise, it looks like how I remember Warcraft 3 and DOTA looked, low res. I cranked up all the graphic settings, noticed little difference.

Is there a setting I am missing to better scale the UI?
The interface looks like WoW mods gone wild, and the player display takes up a lot of screen real estate, but the fonts/colors seem small and hidden. I lean in a lot to read item descriptions, double check hot key assignments.

Also I am unable to discern a particular logic to the creeps/siege weapons and towers. What they attack and when seems entirely random to me. Towers and creeps seem equally likely to attack eachother, players, or towers.

Thirdly, is there a game manual that I am missing because everything has been entirely trial and error thus far?

There is quite a few rules for The creeps and towers. From the top of my head creeps will
1) Keep attacking what they are attacking
2) attack the closest thing
3) switch to attacking an enemy hero if that hero treathens an allied hero
4) unless the attacker used an "orb walk" i.e. manually triggered an attack modifier spell like vipers spit or enchantresses ultimate.
5) loose interest if you move away.

The towers are similar. You can loose aggro on creeps or towers by Pressing a and attacking an ally. Very handy so you dont have to move out of tower range. There is no manual, but you can check out mechanics explanations on playdota.com.
I think you can't change the ui scale as everyone needs to have the same viewport to make it even. I wish I could move the bloody map to the other side though, I hit it way too open when trying to escape on radiant:/

This is a must read for anyone planning to play on any amount of regular level:

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/view...

Highlights:

Command: dota_minimap_misclick_time
Description: Can create a delay between clicking the minimap and a command being issued. Useful to avoid misclicks but I find this a nuisance and disable it.
Example: dota_minimap_misclick_time "0"

Command: dota_force_right_click_attack
Description: Can now right-click to deny creeps
Example: dota_force_right_click_attack "1"
Default: "0", right click deny is disabled
Comments: The trade-off with this command is that it will no longer be possible to right click an ally to follow and instead will have to m-click them. This might be good for former HoN players.

Command: dota_disable_range_finder
Description: When spell is selected, a range finder is shown
Example: dota_disable_range_finder "0"
Default: "1", range finder is disabled

Command: dota_player_multipler_orders
Description: Allows all units controlled by a player to be used by ctrl clicking
Example: dota_player_multipler_orders "1"
Default: "0", disabled

Command: dota_minimap_hero_size
Description: sets the size of the heroes on the minimap
Example: dota_minimap_hero_size "700"
Default: "600"

And there are a lot more improvements you can make with a cfg. There are also some premade .cfgs in the thread to make it easier. <3 console.

What about changing the zoom level?
Any way to zoom out an extra 10-20%? I'd love that

Nope, that would be unfair if you could do that. I think it's OK, took me some getting used to and now I don't mind it at all and I'm using a 4:3 CRT at 1024x768.

Can anyone confirm if higher resolutions allow for wider shots? I'm stuck at 1280x768 due to my monitor.

I would think so, since at least the main menu interface is quite different on higher resolution/WS monitors compared to mine.

This is what I see when I join a game: http://i.imgur.com/0sbpi.jpg

Put the GTX660 in last night, so I have for sale a cheap overclocked GTX470 if someone is looking for a cheap upgrade. Works great.

However this card came with Borderlands 2, so I will likely be one and done with dota most nights.

When is this actually going to go from beta-only to live?

I'm curious enough that with it being a freemium game, I'd give it a shot. But I burned out so fast on LoL that I wouldn't want to waste a beta invite on me.

They are hoping by the end of 2012. I burned out on LoL as well, but played it because there was nothing else. I have played DoTA for the better part of a decade, and it still holds my interest. It has always felt much deeper of a game to me.

Oh DOTA drama.

Double the drama with a double post.

Also, Meepo is dumb.

What you don't like a fed meepo being level 25 while everyone else in the game is 12-13, slows, almost infinite nets, and teleportation?

I tried playing this game for about 45 minutes and it felt almost impenetrable. It added insult to injury that I had trouble figuring out how to exit the game when I was frustrated.

Meepo rules. Also, I'll be on this week.
