Torchlight 2 Catch-All

I watched PCGamer's Class Guide videos on youtube last night. They are a couple of months old but they provide a nice overview of the classes. I'm really torn. I'd normally go right for the melee class (Berserker, in this case), but both the Outlander and Engineer look incredibly cool.

I can already see multiple characters and playthroughs in my future.

Well, one review is out: http://m.kotaku.com/5944546/torchlig...

Is it just me or does anyone else think it unnecessary to review a $20 game?

Is it unnecessary to review a movie that costs $10 to go see?

No, I think a more apt comparison is a movie that costs $3 to see and my answer is that both are unnecessary. I mean unless the review is glowing such that it generates a lot of word of mouth sales.

If the game/movies sucks well thank god we had someone save us from the depths of despair upon seeing a dreadful $3 movie or $20 game.

Reviews can serve purposes other than suggesting ways of maximizing entertainment per dollar. Also, $20 may constitute a larger portion of discretionary entertainment spending to someone other than yourself.

Well hell's bells. I wasn't even gonna pick this up seeing as I have Borderlands 2 on the 360, but this just sounds too good so I just plopped down the plastic on Steam and it's preloading now.

I wonder when this will come to the 360 like the first one?

I strongly disagree. Even if you feel that reviews should serve to only assist purchasing decisions (which I don't think is always true; it can still be interesting to read what other people think about a game that I already own and have played), money is hardly the only limiting factor on whether or not to buy a game. I want to know whether I should bother investing time as well. Maybe a game has a really poor opening section but gets better enough to make it worthwhile after an hour or so. If I just buy the game without reading a review, I may give up on it before I'm through the beginning.

Everything gets reviewed, go look at some random crap on amazon and it'll have reviews. Possibly the only difference here is that people that call themselves 'professional' and have themselves a nice (it's kotaku) little website are reviewing it. Heck, within minutes there will be tons of little 'reviews' all over the place.

To sum up

Torchlight II is also a welcomely generous game. It offers a 20-25 hour quest (on normal difficulty), a vast amount of replayability both in New Game+, and a nearly endless amount of multiplayer options, particularly given the four different character classes and myriad available character builds. And on top of that, Torchlight II is fully moddable, meaning that users can freely change everything about the game, from the graphics to the rules to the "level cap" of 100. Time will tell what wonders (or disappointments) this feature will bring, but if I know anything about the PC modding community, it's that they rarely fail to impress the living crap out of me.

I would read a review or watch a gameplay video for a $10 game before buying it. You can't possibly be so far disconnected from the world to not be able to understand that $20 is a significant amount of money for some people to spend on luxuries.

Even if $20 (or money in general) is insignificant, time is not. I don't want to waste my time playing a bad game when they are so many great options out there. So reviews are helpful, no matter what your financial situation or what the cost is.

Edit: Shouldn't have skimmed.

Reviews are never necessary. That doesn't mean they're not useful or entertaining, though.

Reviews are always necessary.. on anything..Unless you are Apple then people buy your products no matter what... in fact line up 4 days early.

Ouch! Crap, I am an elitist, socialist, secret muslim, 1%er, anti-american, game snob now.

Wait ... you weren't before?

Et tu Brute'?

All the following is in lighthearted fun. At least thats how it sounds in my head...

Free (Free free, not Free2Play with IAP) apps and games get reviewed. Municipal water gets reviewed. Air (quality) gets reviewed.

More than your stance on $20, I'm surprised at someone semi-complaining that someone else put something thoughtfully written(although it could use a proofreader) on the Internet. Are we running out of room for blather and need to limit the amount of intelligent content? Is the IP shortage in Britain just the tip of the iceberg?

Is it too late to get a 4 pack together?

Ow my grammar!
You should probably spoiler tag writing that bad just in case Wordy is reading. You could give him an aneurysm with stuff like that.

Uh... TL2 is downloading... did they release at midnight?

EDIT: Nope, looks like just some extra pre-load, or maybe just my pre-load verifying, since it doesn't look much bigger than before. It definitely said downloading though. Weird.

It's preloading. It's not out till tomorrow.

Nah I pre-loaded Friday. But it downloaded something when I restarted Steam, looked like a couple hundred mb. Weird.

Yeah, mine has done that several times.

Evilseed said it's patching. He checked the official forums, and I didn't bother to verify. He's probably not lying.

Not anymore, suckas!

Unless it's just pre-loading the whole 1.4gb every time I start Steam? It claims that's how much I downloaded in the current downloads window. That would suck for people (like me) with up/down caps per month...

I haven't really looked at it closely, but I feel this is the case for a lot of stuff on Steam (that it just redownloads the whole darned thing when "patching").
