FTL

The subsystems thing basically means installing Teleporters, Drone Controls and a Cloaking Device. You see them for sale in stores all the time, affording them shouldn't be hard on Easy.

Btw, I dont understand the unlock for the Kestrel re: Having all Systems and Sub Systems installed. Can anyone explain this.

For a Kestrel, you will need to purchase: Cloaking, Crew Teleporter, and Drone Control.

Thanks.

Having only the original Kestrel, Engi and Federation Cruiser basic model unlocks, would people consider these basic builds as meant for Easy mode? Or is it realistic to be able to finish the game with these with a bit of skill?

The basic Engi build is awesome. Can't imagine how you would complete the game on either difficulty with the alt-engi build

I can see it happening if you ran into more crew members quite rapidly.

I got to the final boss using the engi alt build. I think I got to section 5 before picking up anyone.

I'm loving the Healing Bomb when I send over two Mantis (Manti?) boarders. Couple that with a boarding drone and a ion cannon...who needs weapons? The major downside is that you are burning through both missiles and drone parts. And you can't use the Droid Recovery Arm for the boarding drone.

It's f*cking tough! I played a game with Torus B and the very first encounter was an event that killed my only crewman.

Fun fact: one of the stores just offered me an Engi named Bruce Geryk

finally after 23 hours I have beat the flagship on normal. But who cares! I love this game I can dedicate 40 more to normal! I'm so glad I backed this Kickstarter project.

Don't feel too bad.

Spoiler:

I'm at 48. Haven't beaten Normal yet, but not for lack of trying.

Spoiler:

My clock is at 48, too.

I just won my first game last night. Kestrel run on Normal. I ended up playing a very stable, safe build. Not a whole lot of offense but enough. In terms of weapons I had Burst Laser II, Hull Laser I, Heavy Laser I, and Fire Bomb, as well as a boarding party of two Rocks. Once you're up against 3 or 4 shields, it's actually kinda tough to break through with these weapons; you have to queue up the lasers to all fire at the same time, but between that and the Fire Bomb and the boarding I was able to wear down all my opponents.

I think the secret of my success was that I was able to start safely winning all my fights pretty early in the run, and so I started banking a lot of scrap, allowing me to max out my power, get 3 shields, plenty of engine, get cloak, etc. This gave me enough safety that I could beat the boss despite having somewhat dicey offense (I wound up taking zero hull damage on Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the boss fight).

Sweet

I was doing great until the 3rd sector and just got cleaned of the chart....arrghhh

I've got a stealth ship that's great in combat because of the pegasus missile, but I'm going to be f*cked once I start hitting enemies with defense drones.

Pegasus isn't too bad against defense drones. Since it shoots two missiles at once at least one of them will be able to get through.

Unless you run into something like this...

Add a little ion cannon and sync it up to fire before the missile goes off.

I would if I could find one! And afford it. The few times I've found weapons for sale, I was out of scrap.

I'll be honest, I kind of wish there was a cheat mode where I could give myself infinite scrap and see how I do with all the upgrades and whatever toys I wanted.

Also, I have no pride.

Or a never-ending sandbox mode.

Made it to the end stage and ran out of missiles fighting my way to the boss. Only non-missile weapon I had was a hull laser I.

Yeah, I managed to recruit up to a full crew of 8, ditched my repair and anti-personnel drones, and replaced them with anti-ship drones. At that point, it basically plays like Engi A but with a different layout and guns.

Almost had the first big boss. It jumped, went at it again, raining drones on me... :w
With full shields, 3x Laser II and plenty of missiles to shoot as well. (also installed)

I would love to see a mod of this game where you control a base of operations and an exploration ship in a wide, random universe. I'm not at all complaining about what the game offers, but there is so much potential here.

More 'Elite' like?

How about a DS-9 mod?

I'm still holding out for the Spelljammer mod

There's something about the idea of my crew of Illithids boarding a Githyanki ship..

FTFY.

So, FTL is also available on Linux. How to go about a copy for Linux without paying twice? Have it on Steam now.

The way to do it would have been to purchase it straight from the game website instead of through Steam or GOG.

Honestly, though, for a game this good at only $9, why not double dip?

Valve's working on getting Steam running on Linux.

Steam! It will cost $9.99 USD and will get you both Windows and Mac versions.
It will have the standard Steam conversions of £6.99 / €9.99 / 249 rubles / $7.99 in CIS territories.

GOG.com! It will cost $9.99 USD for every region and will get you a Windows DRM-free build (need to triple check the region issue).
You will also receive a few bonus items – 5 songs from the soundtrack, a mini-artbook, some wallpapers & avatars, and maybe more (if i have time).

Our Website!! It will cost $9.99 USD for every region and will get you DRM-free builds for Windows, Mac and Linux.
You will also receive a Steam key.

Indeed Bighoppa, I should have gone through their own website. It's kinda crazy though. But I guess that is how things are for now.
Don't have the money to throw out at the moment. So I have the game already. Will have to stick with windows for now to play it.

I know Dimmer!! Can't wait to ditch windows when that happens

Oh god I have lost so many hours to this game. And still havent beaten the boss. Every time something goes south at just the wrong moment. Getting better at boarding tho, and getting a strong build straight out.
