FTL

I guess it's not supposed to play this slow? I think I have a bug. Dammit!

Edit: Those with older ATI video cards running Windows 8, you might be screwed. If you have a HD5000 series or lower, your card has been declared "Legacy" and so no more driver updates for you. And the last driver update was not for Windows 8 and actually does not know what Windows 8 is and hence will not install.

FTL has a bug where it plays extremely slowly. You can "fix" it by enabling vsync. However, there is no mechanism in Windows 8 for doing this and since you cannot get Catalyst Control Center to install, there's no way at all to do it that I have been able to discover.

So unless you want to play the game and have your crew take 90 seconds to walk from the front of the ship to the back of the ship, you might be SOL. Like I am apparently.

There is some sort of option to disable animated backgrounds in-game. That is supposed to make things much smoother on older systems.

Love the game but they can add so much more. Here is what I want.

All minor things

1. Space suites = allows you to breath without oxygen, cuts movement speed.
2. Hand weapons
3. Able to rename new crew members
4. Multilevel ships
5. Be able to assign crew members to rooms by right clicking their name.
6. Be able to program crew members. EX: Stay in engine room, unless ship is boarded then attack enemy, if health less than 50 go to med bay.
7. Queue room entry. You can not enter a room if it is full so it would be nice if your guy automatically entered the room once a space opened up.
6. A tablet version
7. Be able to design ships

I have the opposite problem. Since the game doesn't use vsync the framerate is unlocked and goes nuts. I can tell when this happens because my video card will make a high pitched screeching sound. I had to force it on using the Nvidia controls.

What is super irritating about all this is that turning vsync on actually INCREASES the initial loading time by almost 10X!

Doesn't work for me. Thanks for the tip though.

Yeah, my load screen is fine (can tell by mouse movement) but once the menu comes up, it's over.

Heh. First game, first star is unstable, and starts setting everything on fire. I eventually realize that I can't keep up with the flares, and jump out. At which point, I take long enough to fight the fires that they eventually take out the door controls and the oxygen generator. Game over.

Whee!

Really, really great little game. Lots to learn from it. My first ship died because the rebel fleet caught up with me. Oops. Don't do that. Second one two crew men died from a fire and the third one was trapped and suffocated in the pilot room after the O2 was malfunctioning and the I had opened the doors to put out the fires. Terrible way for GWJ Sway to go.

Literally can not stop playing FTL. It's stupendous.

I'm enjoying the heck out of it....but man, do I hate boarding parties.

Gifted FTL to two friends this morning. Best money I could have spent. I love this game.

Steam really needs to fix it so I can purchase a game and then gift as many copies as I want. Take my money dammit!

Those are some great ideas, especially space suites & ship designer. You can name your crew members, in the hanger screen click customize on your little guys on the bottom left.
I wish I could hotkey my crew!

Yup, that's ultimately what did in my first ship. I did manage to make it to sector 3 at least, which is surprising since I didn't even think about using the med bay to heal crew members hurt in fire/boarding fights until about the 4th jump. Not sure why, but I ended up figuring this was part Oregon Trail, where you had to survive until you got to the next checkpoint. All it took was a trip to the store and the realization there was no "heal crew" button and then I found the med bay.

How do you get more dudes, damn it!!!

From events or some stores sell crew.

I think the reason you can't rename new crew members might be that having your name used was one of the kickstarter rewards.

I keep on getting Notch.

Usually as a slow rock dude.

This game is HARD ...

You can also get more crew if you beat slavers and take their offer of a slave.

I've done pretty well so far. In my first game I got to the third sector, and in my second I got to the 4th sector. This is great, since I'm using the names of my kids for my crew.

Also, space bar is your friend.

I've had this game awhile and I've stuck with the core upgrades like weapons and shields. I finally bought a teleporter and it's amazing. Only problem I never find the mantis aliens for recruitment. I really need that great offense!

I do not like fires. Especially fires in a nebula which hides the parts of your ship that are on fire.

Sys repair drones are your friend.

I finally made it to the final sector (on Easy), but got taken out thanks to a boarding party and some weapons that caused fires in my weapons systems and shields. I was able to jump away from that system, but the next system had a single scout that was able to destroy me thanks to my weapons and shields still being on fire.

Ahhh really, that is pretty cool then.

Just got onboard this game, love love LOVE it. I also like the feel of a slight emergent story that I make around my crew and their journey.

Slightly conflicted about the 'rogue-like' nature, I do get the urge of wanting to have an epic ongoing team but the high threat of complete wipeout does put me on edge in a good way...

So I got the crew teleporter for the first time today. Next battle I sent two of my three guys over (Games and Famous, Boost was piloting) to try to win the fight without destroying the enemy ship since you can get more resources that way. It looks like I'm winning the fight but the enemy was smart enough to retreat to the medbay. I decided to just hit the medbay with a missile before they heal to full. Unfortunately the whole ship blows up and Games and Famous tragically die. I tried to pause and teleport them back as the ship was exploding but it was too late. It took a while for me to get Boost to continue on with a heavy heart. He did find a new Zoltan friend named Kozar to keep him company. However pirates ambushed them at a beacon too close to a star and they perished in flames as they frantically tried to repair the engines.

I'm sad I missed the KickStarter for this--the wait for the retail release was agonizing.

Dammit, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna cave and get this even though I have a negative amount in the budget for necessities let alone games. On the upside this looks (visually like any other indie game that's sat unplayed on my pile for 2+ years so Mrs. prozac probably won't notice

Just unlocked the second Engi ship. It's PAINFUL to play with.

The first Engi ship is pretty awesome. If you get lucky and find a Fire Beam, combined with the Ion Cannon 2 that comes with the ship, it's relatively easy to kill the enemy crew without wrecking the ship -- setting fires in the O2 room is a deadly tactic, especially when you can just keep setting them over and over again. And looting a ship intact gives you a TON of scrap, probably about three times as much as blowing it up.

Endgame spoiler:

Spoiler:

I was able to kill the first form of the final boss, which actually surprised me, but the second form was INSANE. I have no idea how you could possibly survive that.

Oh, when you find beam weapons, it's important not to just spam those, because they're not effective when they hit shields -- you need to wait for the shields to be weak or down completely, and then fire. So if you've got everything on autofire, you're not going to be very effective.

Solution: put your spammy weapons on autofire, and don't target your beam weapon at first. Wait for the beam to charge, and then for shields to go down, target a little line, and watch the fireworks. Then click the beam weapon to target it again, but then immediately right-click to not target it. That way, it will charge up, and will sit there at full charge until you see another opportunity, just like the first time.

Admittedly, this is kinda lame. You really ought to be able to individually set weapons to auto and manual fire, but this does work. Easy to lose track, though, if you're fighting off boarders or trying to put out fires.

edit: the same trick works for missiles -- if they're detargeted after firing once, they'll just charge up and wait for a command. Missiles don't usually need timing, because they cut through shields, but an immediate detarget after firing means you won't waste any you don't intend to.

Any achievement for blinking into a sun + pirate ship and perishing in a fire on your first jump? It is so very good though.
Is everyone else naming their crew after friends? I've lost two of my steam list to a vomiting bug.
