FTL

Steam key thing working for people who bought it off the FTL web site? Worked fine for me earlier.

"Man this game is easy. I already made it to the Exit."

"Oh... that's just the exit for this one sector."

Game of the f*cking year.

Oh f*ck.

...

Wow, I can't believe I survived that fight. Or rather, that the pirate ran.

Worked for me from the Humble site. Got my key immediately.

First run on normal I died in about a minute. I fought off a scout ship, only to get a fire in my O2 room near the back. I opened the doors to vent the air to put it out. Once the fire went out, I was going to use the helpful button to close all the doors on the bottom right of the HUD. I accidently clicked the "open all doors" instead. Guys die in a hurry when you do that and the ship's already a bit low on O2. Queue Taps. All souls lost.

Second run I nearly made it through the fourth sector. However, I lost a crew member in a fight trying to fix the O2, then the room caught fire. I had already killed the enemy ship. I micromanaged my last two guys to get the fire out, but by that time, the O2 in the room was so low that I couldn't get O2 repaired. My guys retreated to med bay and couldn't heal up to return to fix O2 since they were suffocating at the same time they were healing. Taps.

Crap, lost a man fighting a fire.

Yeah, that kinda sh*t hurts the most. :/

Some may consider this little bit spoilers, but I would have liked to know it ahead of time: When trying to get one of the acheivements for the Stealth ship - make it to Sector 8 without environmental damage:

Spoiler:

Do not attempt to win the respect of the Rockmen. They are jerks who cheat and ruin your otherwise splendid run - and then you don't even get the Rockman ship and lose out on the Stealth upgrade... but I'm not bitter.

One other method of de-targetting weapons is to select the weapon using the number hotkey and then right click. That will allow you to manage autotargetting a little easier.

Picked it up direct this morning, managed to sneak in a little bit of play time.

Seriously awesome.

Reading about the game and watching videos I wasn't feeling much draw to check it out, but the concept did seem pretty cool and all the buzz here was quite positive. Finally decided it was worth taking a chance on and yeah, it's great. Videos simply don't do the game justice, it's far more engaging than it looks. In a way it's sort of Diner Dash (resource/time management) meets a roguelike.

Can't wait to sink some more time into it!

Just tried it, skipped the tutorial. 1st sector I find a pirate ship, it lays into me and sets my engine on fire. I figure out how to power up the weapons and shoot but in the time it's taken me to do that the fire has spread to the rear third of my ship. I defeat the pirate, figure out how to vent the fires into space and then watch my crew die because I can't figure out how to get one of them to go fix the O2.

This game is awesome.

I'll pile on with more praise for this game. Picked this up this morning and am finding it very hard to get anything productive done today. It combines the tension of a rogue-like with some rpg/loot elements in a strategic spaceship sim with twitch elements.

Ok Dolan, here's the deal. We are still in the first system and both of your crew members are dead. You totally have this. Just ignore the fact that it took a good 3 minutes for you to get the ship sorted out after the last fight when no one was trying to stop you.

Edit: Why yes Charlie we would be happy to rescue you and offer a job. What happened to the other crew members Charlie? Oh so many questions. Go to the weapon's station now, there's a good man.

Edit: And two jumps later Charlie transcends to a higher plane of existence. We hardly knew yeh.

Edit: And three boarders just came on, Dolan tried his best with airlock and medbay chicanery, but alas, to no avail. He killed at least one of the boarders, and gave the other 1 or two the slip in his ship, circling around in an attempt to fix the medbay and patch himself up for the next fight. Sadly there was too little oxygen due to his previous ploys, and he collapsed gasping to the deck.

The link did nothing for me in Chrome or Safari. So I popped open a WinXP VM I have and opened it in an old version of firefox I still have on there and that worked.

Bought at work, waiting to get home to play.

$9 at GOG. I dunno, if I were a Kickstarter backer, I'd be quite annoyed that I paid more for it than the actual selling price. People who give you money before your game is even finished are super-special customers, and they should get better pricing.

Are you kidding? The backers have been playing for an extra two months. If anything, I wish I could go back in time and kickstart instead of merely giving these guys $9.

Gifted FTL to two friends this morning. Best money I could have spent. I love this game.

I love this game so far, but this needs to be on the tablet.

True story, we've also seen the evolution of features roll out. It's been a really fun ride to log in and find new features every week or so.

Thanks. Tried in IE and it worked fine.

Are there hotkeys to select crew members quickly?

Hahaha, you mean, to make the game easier to manage?! Hahahahahaha

No. Only hotkeys for the weapons and drones.

I've made it to the end boss twice now and I have only one gripe about the game.

The interface gives you an option to automate the firing of weapons. But its an all or nothing deal, you can't individually select which weapons are automated. Some weapons are designed to be spammed like EMP guns, they have super short recharges in the region of 5 seconds. But if I turn automation on I can't stop the game from also spamming all my missile weapons and wasting limited ammo.

That's true, but you can discretely stop the firing sequence on a given weapon (don't remember what the in-game terminology for this is -- disarm? I don't mean deactivate). So if I have autofire on, my missile weapon has just fired, and it is charging to fire again at a designated target, if I press the hotkey or click the weapon to arm, and instead of choosing a new target I simply right-click, the weapon will be disarmed. It will still draw power and continue to charge, but it will not fire automatically.

I know how to turn them OFF. What I really need is a pause button that doesn't involve deactivating a weapon and losing all charge progress on it. I know the autotargetting isn't supposed to be a replacement for a human and there IS a pause button. But I simply can't use Ion cannons because otherwise 99% of my gameplay is click click clicking on this one weapon. The Ion cannon doesn't even do damage! It's supposed to be a rapid fire shield suppressor. But if I use it as such I can't stop the game from wasting all my other weapons by firing them at the wrong times.

(Now I have to add the disclaimer that this was much more of a problem last night before I got used to hovering my left hand over the 1-4 keys. But the whole point of automation is to reduce tedium, Ion cannons are still the most clickspammy thing in the game.)

I'm still working my way through winning with all the ships and I just won with the Adjudicator on my second try. I feel like both of the Zoltan ships are pretty easy to win with. Anyway, I am sitting through the credits and I see our very own AP Erebus and Coldstream in the special thanks section. It was like knowing famous people!

You don't need to deactivate a weapon to untarget it. If a weapon has a target selected and you want to remove that target without losing the weapon's charge, hit the number the weapon is assigned to and right click.

So far I've come across Bruce Geryk's name. Anyone else found named characters that they recognize?

Thanks a ton Erik! The tutorial doesn't mention little stuff like that.

Running into a strange new problem. I tried fullscreen - Stretch. But all it did was display the game with black bars and didn't make it any bigger. I changed back to windowed but now the game appears in the top left corner of my screen instead of in the centre when I start it up. Very irritating, but I have no idea how to go about changing this.

That happened to my expert pilot. Damn it Starbuck!

I'm getting to the point where I'm really reluctant to do anything with those story events. Best case scenario is usually that I get a little bit of scrap. But I seem to lose a near irreplacable crew member about 25% of the time.

Also, I just tried out an Engi ship for the first time. f*cking android pacifists. If you don't find a pretty nice weapon upgrade early on, that ship is near worthless.

I've only encountered a few of them but I think the outcome went my way once so far. They are definitely a gamble.

Holy crap my friends list is full of FTL...

I guess it's not supposed to play this slow? I think I have a bug. Dammit!

Edit: Those with older ATI video cards running Windows 8, you might be screwed. If you have a HD5000 series or lower, your card has been declared "Legacy" and so no more driver updates for you. And the last driver update was not for Windows 8 and actually does not know what Windows 8 is and hence will not install.

FTL has a bug where it plays extremely slowly. You can "fix" it by enabling vsync. However, there is no mechanism in Windows 8 for doing this and since you cannot get Catalyst Control Center to install, there's no way at all to do it that I have been able to discover.

So unless you want to play the game and have your crew take 90 seconds to walk from the front of the ship to the back of the ship, you might be SOL. Like I am apparently.
