Summoner Wars Tournament (iOS)

Jungle elves can be a good faction to play aggressively, but it requires a bit of practice to learn when and how to do it.

Also, whatever faction you are playing keep in mind you can only move 3 units, and only attack with three units (there are exceptions to some of this, jungle elves have some extra move options). So if you are putting out a unit make sure you know why, and that its purpose couldn't be served by something already on the board.

Another thing to think about is that any unit you play is a point of magic you didn't build, as well as a potential source of magic for your opponent.

If you (or anyone) want some practice feel free to send me a game invite.

Good game pacman. I think I overcommitted at the beginning of our match.

If I hadn't had a wall it might have worked out pretty well. The 0 for 3 with the lioness didn't help you either, although I think that balanced out my initial 0 for 3 with the opening round chant of haste. The one thing I didn't understand was on the turn you made your charge, you attacked a wall with a lioneer, rather than an archer with a lioness. That allowed the archer to block things next turn, as well as killing the lioness (so magic for me, and not killing the archer meant no magic for you). Was there a plan to that or did you miscount your attacks?

Not a good way to start the game. 1/4 and it cost me 4 magic to do so...

If it weren't for a lot of unlucky dice rolls and the fact that I was playing the bullsh*te Tundra Orcs, BoudreauxOO would have beaten me handily. Good game!

So that means you won then hubbinsd?

Yes, he did. It was well played, until I rolled snake eyes on his summoner and he rolled 4/4 on mine. It was game over at that point.

Ok, I've updated info in the opening post for where things are at, and sent PM's to people who are ready for new matches.

Things seem to be moving pretty well, nice job everyone

Things are moving a bit slow on my end, but I think that's because Rob and I are on opposite play schedules. He doesn't seem to update his moves in the evening when I have time, and I can't do it during the day when he seems to be on.

No worries, as long as progress is being made.

Indeed, but hopefully more overlap at the weekend so we are done before Monday. Meanwhile Prince Elien took a chance and offed one of your Zombies (for the time being at least). The nuisance is that I still haven't drawn another wall ...

Well, you're two champions up so things are looking a bit grim for me. I've been frustrated in a few games by games where I'm mana deprived because the opponent builds almost no commons and just builds magic for champions. Not over yet but looking hairy.

Sorry 'bout that. Like most things in SW, it's situational whether I have more Champions or Commons. I never have a set approach and in this case I started looking for the beef to handle Skhull when it came out so early. Now I've got the board presence, you have more in reserve and I'm not really sure how to proceed. No doubt you'll give me a sign or something else to handle.

It's posts like these that make me wish for a replay system/spectator system for games

Invite is out to you, sir.

Well, Trachalio and I are still playing, but I have to say: this game is fun! I think the somewhat middling presentation put me off when I was playing a lot of Hero Academy (which imo looks great), but the games feel a lot more "concise", if that makes sense.

GG Hubbinsd!

I think I'm the first one on to round 3.

GG oilypenguin! I felt like every turn I was cursing myself for some boneheaded move, but you honed in on every turn. Nice!

I haven't played Hero Academy, so I can't compare, but I think I get what you mean about concise. All the decisions you make feel important, and nothing in the game feels wasted, all the excess fat has been trimmed away.

GG n3cro! You totally kicked my butt!

Note to self: do NOT play summoner wars after having two Duvels and a glass of port!

EDIT: not that being sober would have made a difference. N3cro cornered me but good!

I have come to appreciate the flexibility of the Archangel. Clogging the lanes of approach is such a huge part of this game, being able to bypass that is really powerful. Definitely GG though. I thought you were going to slip away at the end there and my one-wound-remaining summoner would get mangled by your terrifying champion. When there's nothing else on the board to block him with, that dude is scary!

I won my game against Boudreaux.

Yep, good game SixteenBlue. Those last freezes you held onto were killer.

That was actually more luck. I drew them, I didn't plan that ahead of time.

I don't remember exactly...probably miscounted.

Dysplastic and I are getting through some turns at the moment so our game should be done today or tomorrow. He brought Elut-Bal and some annoying Cultists to the party and my ranks are thinned so my Fire Drake is back to hiding behind walls and shooting through them. If I can manage to get rid of Elut-Bal without too much pain then it should work out okay for me ... but nothing is done until it's done ...

Yeah, this one is over. Fire Drake's one guaranteed damage a turn is too hard to counter when you're already on the rocks. My only hope was those last two cultists, but of course one completely missed, and then the other got hit by a burn instead of potentially doing another damage.

I definitely started that game off poorly with some summoner hunting blinders. I should have stayed focus on crowding and destroying your wall. But aside from that, I feel like that was a really bad matchup for me deck-wise. My commons were essentially all zombies and cultists, which is a deck I've had used against me to great effect, but if the only commons that are brought out are 2 damage/3hp fire drakes, I can't use the zombies to proper effect. I also had the cultists in there for champion takedown (recyclable with Greater Raise), but the PE's burn events make them far less effective. Either way, I really liked your PE deck and will definitely be copying it. As for the Undead, while I really enjoy playing with them I'm starting to feel they're easily counter-able by limiting your unit count to high-HP units. Will need some more games to test.

Anyways, off to relegation!
I'd like to start my next game ASAP as I have exactly one week left before I'm off and internetless for a week, and I don't want to hold everyone up.

You were indeed unlucky with the Cultists. Looking back I can see that your point about the mismatch (from your point of view!) of the decks is spot on. That did really work in my favour, starting with getting the right cards to get rid of Skhull without taking hits to Prince Elien - which would have made me rather nervous for the rest of the game. Instead you had the two Forced Summons hits on Ret-Talus plus one from me which must have inhibited your game. I still proceeded cautiously as you kept me guessing but I got there in the end.

Thanks for the game, enjoyed it.

Okie doke. Challange sent!

Dysplastic your next match is against athros, robthomasson you get to play me next.

I am not an expert in playing Fallen Kingdom, but I tend to view them as a champion focused faction. Between the Elut-Bal power and forced summon you have the ability to get champions out fast for low magic cost. Then you can use dark sacrifice to heal the champions, and also build your magic (the sacrificed units go to your magic pile, not your discard pile, with the exception of skeletal archers I think, where you need to lose a magic lock roll). I tend to use mostly cultists and reapers. Cultists make nice "armor" to put around your summoner, and also pack a nice punch when they attack, while reapers have plenty of hit points to make sure they live till you sacrifice them. They are a very event card focused faction, with forced summons, dark sacrifice and legion of the dead (chance to get 6 magic worth of units for 3 magic!) very key to their success. My problem is that they feel more dependent on card draw order than other factions. If you start off with a whole bunch of event cards, and your champions don't come till late you will have a hard game.

I have a new Fallen Kingdom Deck that will hopefully survive bad draws and bad match-ups better than before. I'm currently testing it vs QT3 forum goers.

Fallen Kingdom vs Phoenix is indeed a bad match-up for the Undead. You are pretty much regulated to 1 forced summon because if you used both, you will pretty much run the whole game when the Elves get 7 magic. It's a tough fight and worst than Fallen Kingdom vs the Dwarves/Jungle Elves.

Edit: Fallen Kingdom is my first race, so they hold a special place in my heart. It's sucks that their bad match-ups are are the most played factions...
