Gamer Podcasts

I can only assume they've wildly changed the design (for the worse) or scratch my head in bemusement. *shrug*

The only pair of earbuds I will ever buy or use again.

I want to say that I've really been enjoying the new Gamespot Gameplay podcast (it's still impossible to find using their website UI, though.)

It's basically a round-up of the world of video games from the past week presented as a game show. It's kind of a neat mix of silliness and really frank discussion about being a videogame journalist. They also tend to have at least one guest a week from either a different website or a developer. It might wear thin if you already listen to a lot of podcasts that cover the news but as someone who shed most of his gaming podcasts this year, I find it works pretty well. At the very least, it's nice to have a podcast that doesn't just follow the whatchplayin>news>email format.

The spoilercast with the lead writer from Spec Ops: The Line is a must-listen as well.

The problem with paying $100 for earbuds is that they are going to see hard usage so even if they are well made I will probably still need to replace them every so often. I checked my order history and found the earbuds I bought:

MEElectronics M6-CL Sport Sound-Isolating In-Ear Headphones for iPod, iPhone, MP3/CD/DVD Players - Clear

Currently $20 but I think I got them on sale for closer to $15. My earbuds are on their last legs now but I got over 6 months of pretty hard usage out of them (exercise, hiking, jogging etc.). Good sound, very solid build. Recommended.

Anyway, that's my last post on earbuds in the podcast thread, sorry!

The TouchArcade podcast recommended here is not bad. Anyone else got iOS recommendations?

These things are the ugliest most comfortable ear buds I have ever used. I can wear these for hours and not even notice they are in (aside from the noise they are pushing to my brain). They are only $10 now. I got them in the store for $6.99. I bought three sets after falling in love with the first set.

I can't really comment on their audio quality because I use them to listen to podcast not music.

You might enjoy this (isn't directly about eve until about 28 minutes though)

So it turns out I will probably be driving myself to and from Escapist Expo in a car by my lonesome. That's a long drive. Is there a "Best of GWJ Conference Call" list that I can look into?

So I skimmed through the last pages and I can't seem to find any mentions; are there any good podcasts about video games from the business perspective? I love every CC episode, but I think I enjoy it most when the conversation turns towards business models, tendencies, etc.

In the same vein, could the goodjer hive mind share any recommendations about sites that look at the vid game industry as such? An industry?

I tend away from those podcasts these days, so I'm not sure. I will say you can look forward to this week's show

If you can find it, let me know. Gamasutra used to have a podcast feed, which was a mix of roundtable discussions with developers about specific topics and GDC lectures that were no longer being charged for, but it hasn't been updated for years. I think you're out of luck for that kind of audio unless you want to pay for it.

We started this episode with absolutely no intentions of it turning into a 35 minute rant, but lo and behold, that’s what we got. So, in the event you are not in the mood for a rant, you can go ahead and listen to Episode 26 Part 2. Although, we recommend giving this rant a listen, because it’s fairly, oh whats the word I’m looking for… informative. …maybe?

http://everythingstentative.com/blog...

Part 2 of this episode is in keeping with most other episodes of our show. We make stupid jokes about almost anything and basically derail a conversation about gaming every chance we get. Be warned though: if you didn’t listen to part 1, you will miss the awesome intro music we chose this week. Like normal, here’s our list of topics covered that is neither guaranteed nor implied to be complete or consistent or really anything other than a list: The Normal, Eating and making stuff, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, New VS Remake, Silent Hill: (DUNGEON CRAWLER), Marketing, Resident Evil 6, Skyrim, People being vulgar in online gaming, Fieldrunners, Super Meat Boy, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, Darksiders 2, The New Segment.

Garnet seems to have changed his approach in the last two episodes of Weekend Confirmed. It's tons better.

Colour me impressed.

Yeah, no women on. I don't think anything fundamental has changed.

It just struck me that he was talking in a more measured way. No Innuendo, no playing devils advocate or venturing boldly into areas where he didn't have the knowledge to back himself up. It could be just the podcast equivalent of Stockholm syndrome setting in but I was listening and enjoying his comments more than before. It's also possible that it's the games: Darksiders, Madden and Borderlands. He seems to love and have played them all.

You could try this one as well

Thanks for the Eve recommendations- will check both.

Yeah, it's weird that business side podcasts have all fizzled away. Game Theory was great, and it's predecessor only existed in the form of like 3 eps before it fizzled. Maybe those with the knowhow to discuss this simply lack the time? There does seem to be an interest in this kind of discussion, just no content to fill the void.

Walled Garden is more app than game specifically, but it is more behind the scenes than many.

Visiting the Village is from a couple of game devs and they often talk shop. But it is also similar in structure to the CC.

Edit: the lack may be more due to folks that would be good for it are actually too busy to podcast about it.

Oh, they started up the podcast again, goodie! They took quite a break there. They're the guys behind Frozen Synapse. I don't often agree with them, but it's always nice to get a developer's perspective on things.

I generally find myself neither agreeing nor disagreeing with podcasts. I just listen and use it as food for thought. I usually use podcasts as a way to educate myself, though, rather than pure entertainment. I assume the people talking know some stuff I don't but don't assume they are experts or right unless other evidence beyond having a mic and an ISP suggests otherwise.

So the GWJCC seems to be the only gaming podcast I've listened to consistently for years, but I seem to find I have an appetite for another hour or so of gaming talk on top of the conference call. Are there any other mature game discussions podcasts out there? I'm okay with them mixing in video gaming with movies and or boardgames (boardgames would be a big plus actually).
I've tried and given up on the following for various reasons, so please exclude them from suggestions if you'd be so kind...

Already tried: RebelFM, Weekend Confirmed, BombCast, GeekBox, Indoor Kids, TRS, GoodGame.

Maybe I'm just too picky..?

Idle Thumbs just started back up, and most of their past episodes are among the best.

%50 mature game discussion centering around games as an art form.
%10 complete nonsense and strange noises.
%40 farcry 2

Do you like strategy games? Try Three Moves Ahead. Pretty serious strategy gaming podcast, not much horsing around. They usually go deep into strategy game design, both videogame and boardgame (mostly videogames but quite a bit of boardgame talk filters in).

So, 40% more than the norm? While the comment was cheeky, I looked through my feed and IT and TMA were the best choices. Not a lot of great gaming podcasts that are topical and also mature.

I don't think so. I still listen to only one of those and even that is an episode by episode proposition. Give Wired's Game|Life Podcast a shot. It could be your thing and it's usually just an hour a week.

The secret ingredients to build a Goldblum.

The silliniess is indeed silly, but the serious discussions IT gets into aren't duplicated elsewhere. It's a wise cast, also sometimes ridiculous.

I only recently got into Idle Thumbs and it really is good... a panel of smart, goofy devs is actually a really nice counterpart to the smart, goofy enthusiasts of GWJCC.

Troubleshot, I also recommend taking a trip through the archives of Brainy Gamer's podcast. Good guests (mostly) and discussion led by theater professor and gaming overthinker Michael Abbott. He's still doing the podcast but new episodes are less frequent. There is, however, a new one about Mark of the Ninja that I'm waiting to listen to for when I've played a bit.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm already subscribed to TMA but yet to listen, ill try it out but it may be too specific for me. Do love the times I've heard these hosts on GWJ though.
I'll also try Idle Thumbs, Game Life, aand Brainy Gamer.

Some episodes of TMA are hard to listen to for people not interested in the deep end of strategy like those focusing on war games, but you can easily cherry pick the episodes related to games you're interested in or the ones about more general topics. Personally I still listen to all of them but usually end up tuning out when they talk about something like WW2 at length.
