City of Heroes - 2011 status?

Dunno who (if anyone) is still playing, but Paragon studios is closing and City of Heroes will be shut down by the end of the year.

8 years is a long time.

Damn I'll have to login and get some farewell screenshots of my old characters or something.

Damn. Tis a sad day indeed. This was my first MMO and I came back to it many times over the years. I thought for sure that going F2P would give it many more years of success. I wonder why they didn't opt for a City of Heroes 2? I blame DCUO and Champions for stinking up the proverbial room.

DCUO was fun though. Champions was pretty crappy.

City of Heroes came in at a perfect time. MMOs were just starting to emerge, and WoW hadn't come out yet. It's launch was, to the best of my recollection, almost perfect, and it remained fairly active over its entire lifetime.

I also jumped into the MMO world with City of Heroes. It was there that I first saw what a good community was like when I joined my first Supergroup, the Simian Defense Force, on the Infinity Server. Eventually I rose up to be co-leader of the SDF on both the City of Heroes and City of Villains side for about a year. The people in there were awesome, and more than once I saw things happen in the community that I never saw again until I came to find this community here.

They still have the best costume creator out there, bar none, and I suspect that they could have made a fair amount of money simply selling a standalone character creator.

They had a demo character creator at one point. Maybe it was something they took to a PAX or E3 or something. But it got leaked out there I think? I am pretty sure I remember seeing it at one point. Although it probably doesn't have all the costume pieces the game has by now.

There was a standalone copy of the Character Creator, the only problem is that to get it, you had to go through the Korean City of Heroes website. It was never released in North America for some reason. It was awesome, and I lost many, many hours using it.

I don't know if anyone remembers Paragon radio but I was one of the DJs for a short bit

I spent many an evening in Paragon City listening to Paragon Radio.

I'm trying to remember how long I played, or at least had a subscription. I had an account for around six years, it seems.

I was mostly just caught up in the level grind. Socializing as a roleplayer tends to scare me a lot, so I tend to just be casual about things. My wife found a role playing group, and they were cool about sometimes crossing paths to meet our respective goals.

My only level 50 character was a clown. I should go get screen shots of him. It's the closest I ever came to roleplaying there. The truth is, I run my mouth like that just about nonstop. I looked really good at playing that character and it marked the most social I was able to be there. But I really never felt at home there.

I've been consoling my wife through a lot of tears this weekend. A lot.

Man I loved Paragon Radio. DJ Buddha and Radiowave set the bar for MMO tie-in radio stations for me. I've never been able to find any other game stations that even come close. Hated it when they sold it to the MMO Radio site.

Just a reminder, COH is closing tonight at 3 a.m. EST. Massively.com will be livestreaming the event.

I played over three years, and although I've long since moved on, I still feel sad by the game's shutdown.

Yeah I patched up last night, in hopes of getting some time in tonight. We'll see. Servers will probably be slammed.

I played on and off from 04-08. Definitely some great times there. Had a lot of intertwined back stories made up between my various characters on multiple servers. What a great creative outlet it was.

Thought F2P was going to extend it indefinitely. Sad to see it go.

Anyone getting on tonight for the last hurrah?

They're shutting down for good tonight at 12am PST.

Just had to log in on Defiant (EU server) to see if any of my old SG were on - I started off in the beta test (almost 8 years ago now, blimey) and played a heck of a lot of time in CoH and CoV. As someone said elsewhere, it was one of the few games I've played where a lvl 1 alt could feel special, and how awesome did it feel when your character could take to the skies at lvl 14. I'll miss it.

Farewell Doktor Weebl - many a pastry manufacturer is getting ready for significant redundancies now that Paragon City will no longer be defended by a pie-fuelled superhero.

I'm on Virtue tonight as Foolish Gesture. My clown.

Currently on that Virtue server, in Atlas Park 2, standing on Atlas's backside and juggling. Maybe later I'll use the fishing pole emote.

After I stopped playing him, I went on to join a group of magicians, twist balloon animals for tips, and spend 2012 studying/performing at an improv theater.

I'm online. @Stele.

Not seeing my of my old SG around it seems.

EDIT: Looks like at least 4 of them were logged in today. Just seem to have missed them.

@Foolish Gesture

I'll probably hang out until it gets shut down, just to see what it looks like.

Edit: Or unless Virtue crashes too many more times. But I want to be right there on Atlas's buttocks, juggling and watching the world end.

Damn. People in every server doing a holdtorch emote, holding vigil in AP by the Atlas statue and steps.

I can't sit through another 2 hours. So many hours and memories and friends... whew.

Good night CoH. Had a great time playing with good folks back in '04.

And...it's gone.

I watched the last 10 minutes on Massively.com's livestream. It was heartbreaking.

There are many MMOs, old and new, that should be left to die a death. CoH deserved better, and I'll genuinely miss it.

Arise thread.

Like the Phoenix from the ashes, City of Heroes may yet rise again. There is a group now in official talks with NCSoft to obtain rights to the IP and bring it back. It sounds like they have some hurdles left but it also sounds extremely promising...

And the mask comes off

I was in on the first day, and logged in on the last.

I'd be back in like a shot, let's hope it comes off.

Wow.

I wish CoH hadn't closed and would definitely play it again.
