Hurricane Survival Thread 2012

Pages

So our annual thread should have started already. We're up to D already in June, the earliest since they've been naming I think I heard. Previous earliest D was like July 3?

Debby (who decides how to misspell names over there?) has been raining on us on the Gulf side of Florida for about 5 days now.

Still getting massive gusts of wind, tidal surge, and some flooding around the area. So far so good on electricity around my area. And no tornado touchdowns here, but several around the state. Skyway bridge is closed for a few days, so traffic around the bay will be a nightmare.

Predictions now seem to send it back across the northern part of the state and back out to sea.

While it was just sitting in the gulf trying to decide what to do, it just pounded us with rain from Thurs-Mon almost non-stop. Saw the sun for the first time in days yesterday afternoon.

Not so worried about this one, but stay safe for the rest of the season, Hurricane alley folks.

2012 was actually predicted to be a below average season. Fingers crossed.

I'm actually kind of glad about Debby, we've been in a level 4 drought condition for almost the last two years. We sorely need the rain.

True enough, we did need the rain. Been playing catch-up all year since Jan-Feb had nothing. News this morning said we set a record for June though.

I drove to St. Pete from NC Monday and didn't get hit much except near Jacksonville. Definitely windy still!

We had a bad storm hit us while we were in the mountains this past weekend, knocked out the power (and water) but it was fortunately no hurricane.

Apparently Ernesto is remaining a tropical storm. Lots and lots of rain right now to our Mexican neighbors.

You know, since my mom's been taking Paxil I don't even know when hurricanes are coming to her area anymore.

So... here comes Isaac.

I'm not sure if the predictions are really going to bring it here, or if that's just exciting news to talk about the RNC in Tampa and the possibility of a hurricane.

Either way, the fear-based news has got my wife freaking out about buying supplies.

Of course we had one that was heading straight for us last year a week out, and then it turned north and went to the Carolinas. I'm a little more hesitant to believe their predictions until it's done with Cuba in a couple of days and back at sea.

Hm looks like it's turning west a bit, so we might be clear of the worst of it. Still going to get tropical storm force winds and rain. But doesn't look like I'll have to evacuate at this point.

Wish me luck tonight/tomorrow.

And now it looks like Isaac is heading right for my back yard. Just awesome. Time to start making some decisions with my Mom who's health is bad and is on oxygen so she can't be without electricity for any length of time.

Sigh...

Good luck and stay safe. Thinking about all you folks down there.

I think it is hitting St. Louis right now. Sheesh!

But seriously, stay safe down there.

Good luck other gulf people. Looks like we're mostly getting rain right now and rain tomorrow and rain and rain.

Hopefully we can handle that.

I do have to go out driving in it tomorrow morning, dreading rush hour quite a bit. But assuming I make it back home and they don't close the Skyway Bridge for high winds then I will have an ok day.

Well this is now an official hurricane so it immediately goes from "just a big thunderstorm" to something that deserves serious respect. I'm fairly well hunkered down. Wife and two kids (even though they are grown, I got them to go) are back in Florida. I have plenty of food/drinks to last about 2 weeks. Generator is ready and about 5 days worth of gas. Chances are all of this will be overkill, but after Katrina I take no chances!

See everyone on the other side!

My mom and grandmother evacuated and are staying with a cousin in Lafayette, but I've been watching the reports and while the storm may not be super powerful, good grief is it moving slow and dumping ridiculous amounts of rain.

Update: Lost power around 2 a.m. when a huge pine tree fell across power lines. It is still there as the winds are still too high to send repair crews out.

However I am fine. Just fired up the generator, plugged the 'puter up (priorities!) and even my Internet is still up and running! Even played Guild Wars 2 for about 30 minutes to break up the boredom. So while it is still pretty windy and VERY rainy, all will be fine eventually.

Thanks for all the messages with good wishes!

Yeah I think flood damage is more of a risk than wind damage right now. Hoping New Orleans doesn't end up underwater again.

One levee has already been breached by Chalmette. I know few people know where that is, but it is in the area that least needs to be flooded again. Still lots of areas that have not come back since Katrina.

Not good.

My Google News is filled up with all Isaac all the time now, which is my barometer for how serious it is down there. Stay safe, warm wishes.

Looks like the season isn't quite over. Sandy hitting Cuba right now, and should be passing by Florida in a couple of days. Predictions right now are just rain and wind, with no landfall. Maybe heading up towards the Carolinas?

Latest prediction I saw has it hitting New England as a tropical storm: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/grap...

Lovely. Not great that it's expected to land near the mid-section of NE where the one that hit 1-2 years ago.

OMG it's a FRANKENSTORM!

We were debating at dinner tonight whether it was better to call a hurricane with snow a snowicane or a hurriblizzard.

Oh man, the local news gets to bust out their SNOWPOCALYPSE animations again!

The talk around the office is how each of us is preparing.

I mentioned that I have 10 gallons of water in jugs downstairs, lots of shelf stable food, flashlights and batteries, a first aid kit, and 2500+ rounds of ammunition and one of my coworkers said "party at [Paleocon's] house". At that point, another coworker said "Didn't we just hear him say 'ammunition'?".

I wish my wife would let me get a generator though.

When people ask me how I prepare, I tell them I'm not, I'm sure it'll be no big deal.

For years I've also given them a false address. They're not getting into MY bunker, gad durnit!

Seen on my facebook wall. Originally for another storm, but probably applies just as well to this one...

We're currently just sw of the storm track for Tuesday. It will still be a Cat 1 if the forecast is right. Bought some staple foods and will pick up water and batteries tonight. Not sure if I need to board up the sliding glass doors or not, they face North.

I can't wait to see news coverage where some hapless reporter on a beach gets blown about by the storm.

And then the power will go out and I will be sad.
