Gamer Podcasts

Are there any good Eve Online podcasts? I'm not interested in playing it, but love to hear the stories.

So yeah, I think I'm done with Weekend Confirmed. The latest show was just a disaster. It was like everyone had 4 cups of coffee prior to recording and just couldn't sit still. I'm halfway through the show and am actually tense with frustration. As usual, Garnett was being a child around Andrea and constantly attempting to derail her (though she seems to be handling it better, at least before she got drunk) but everyone was constantly going off the rails and interrupting what started to be decent discussion with stupid innuendos or discussion of Garnett's cat (seriously guys, you haven't seen a kitten before or something?) I was liking how they went a little bit more unstructured and free-flowing but this is just dumb now. Shame, I've been around since the beginning.

Same here. I didn't get very far into it before I had to turn it off.
Even setting the childish stuff aside I think Garnett just manages steer the conversations into the most boring places and then just hold them there.

Well, EVE podcasts have a long tradition of dying. There's one or two that I like but I'm not sure they'd be of much value to someone who doesn't play the game. A podcast that I think might've doesn't appear to be going anymore (there haven't been any updates in ages).

Yeah, I've been subscribed to 1up Yours/Weekend Confirmed for years, but simply lost interest over this past year.

I haven't listened in maybe a couple months and it makes me wonder why I still have it on auto-update in iTunes.

It's too bad 'cause I'm a big Garnett defender, being keen on his passion for gaming, even into his 40's (same age here). But I just don't have it in me anymore to turn a blind eye to his more destructive and juvenile traits.

Well, to be fair, they did state up front that it was a party/social gathering episode, so it was going to be more rambling and less focused. Jeff Cannata acknowledged that they get feedback that people don't enjoy those types of episodes, and his stance was if you don't like that then skip this one. I actually thought Andrea did a much better job of not taking Garnett's bait which was nice.

I agree that episodes like that make for extremely poor radio, though.

Agreed on all counts.

I just greatly prefer episodes of Weekend Confirmed when Garnett isn't there, I think that is all there is to it.

I like Cannata's balls though. He was quite upfront about how this was a party cast and he knows people don't think they are as high in quality as the regular show. Listen or don't, this is a free show.

I can admire someone doing something for its own sake, because it's something the enjoy doing. He won some points with me for that.

Blah, Garnett is not my favorite radio personality, blah.

I like Garnett, but I think he is in the wrong spot in running the show each week.

He should turn the show over to someone with more structure like Jeff Mattis(sp?). Then Garnett can be free to be off the cuff and off topic knowing that someone will occasionally drag him back to the topic.

Completely the same. It's the weirdest thing- how hard it is to quit something you don't enjoy anymore.

The thing is, it's not just this episode. This type of thing has been happening more and more during regular episodes of late too. It actually gets noticeably worse when Cannata's absent because he's actually good at keeping things on track. I've been a big defender of Garnett too because even when I don't agree, I always love seeing someone who is passionate about what they're into. It's the non-game related elements of what he does on the show that irks me. I do fully get that it's a free show but I don't think that makes it immune from criticism. If people don't state what they don't like, nothing can ever improve.

I listen for the Jeffs and, though he's unpopular among listeners, I also like it when Spicer is on occasionally.

That being said, I listen to most ofmy podcasts the week they come out, while Weekend Confirmed piles up 4 or 5 episodes until I've got a bunch of transit or decide to do up my jogging.

Well, I guess I'm glad I haven't listened to either of the last two Weekend Confirmed episodes then. I listened to the first 10 mins of last weeks and just had to turn it off. I still can't seem to outright delete it off my iTunes, just in case I get in need of a Cannata fix.

I tried Idle Thumbs out again and thanks to Kuddles and Demonbox for the encouragement and link to the wrap up and to try from the beginning. I've listened to a couple since then and have really gotten into some of their banter, even if the games are a little old at this point. Still warming up to it, but guess I just started at the Progresscasts and jumped in blind and had no *clue* what was going down. I have heard great things about it, but starting right after the Kickstarter without context was my bad, I guess.

Anyway, blazing through em and should be caught up and might feel a little more comfy with just getting rid of Weekend Confirmed altogether. Definitely skipping this week's episode as well on everyone else's opinions about it not getting any better. Thanks for the warning, y'all!

I do still enjoy the show, despite the issues we've all talked about. If I drop it, it's not because I dislike it, but because I just don't have the time and because there are even better casts that I will not compromise on. Insert Credit is now higher priority for me than Weekend Confirmed (full game cast priority: Idle Thumbs > GWJCC > Insert Credit > Weekend Confirmed) and I'm barely making that all work with important non-game things like Radiolab and This American Life. So Weekend Confirmed is kind of hanging by a thread for me.

I mostly listen to WC for Cannata at this point (though I like the other Jeff and Xav if he ever comes on any more as well) - and if Cannata ever stops doing this I'm sure I'll be done too. Garnett can't carry the show on his own, and he needs somebody with a little more maturity to keep him in check. I think as the show has gone on Cannata has let Garnett get away with more of his antics, though.

I actually thought Andrea was slightly better last episode, somehow she got a bit more coherent in the last 30 minutes or so. Also, the pet talk on Rebel FM was always far worse from what I remember. They would go on at length about how fat their cats are or how their cat just farted or whatever.

But on the whole I agree, not one of the better episodes. By a long shot.

Hope you end up enjoying it. I do think starting in the middle of the progress casts would have been a weird way to get in. The newer ones have been good lately. It wasn't drawn out like I would have liked but last week's ep where they talked about the truly defining aspects of war in a modern age are absent from Modern Warfare type games. I love the humor, but just really love how they break gameplay down sometimes- really has helped me to be more critical, which is what I desire.

Sounds like I'm not going to enjoy the next episode of weekend confirmed. It's always a tightrope of annoyance vs enjoyment for me. It'd probably be a lot better if they didn't drink.

I really like Andrea. I just feel like she gets talked over too much and Garnet's inuendometer goes way over into the red whenever she's on. The previous episode she was on I thought they did give her more space and felt they were at last making a conscious effort to treat her like a normal human being.

Edit: Listened to the first four minutes. Andrea sounds well gone drink wise, as does Garnet. Andrea suggested, if the audience were drunk also, they'd enjoy it more. I'd rather go the everyone sober route. I don't know if Garnet has a drinking problem. If I had to do a podcast and people kept reacting negatively to me and my opinions then maybe I'd need a stiff drink before doing a show but I can't see it helping.

I'll give this one a miss but probably tune in next week. Jeff Cannata sounds like he doesn't necessarily think it's a great idea but that he's doing his best to get into the spirit of the thing.

I don't know him and am in no way judging, but I personally think he does.

There are certainly shades of gray in the matter, but it's no secret that his consumption gets away from him sometimes.

There is absolutely no way you can tell via listening to a podcast once a week (even if it's for years). Pure speculation that doesn't add up to anything.

Yeah, I'm not calling him out or anything. It's just my gut feel after years of listening (which I'm well aware is impossible to authenticate, not knowing him personally).

Higgledy wrote:

I usually listen to the podcast while driving.

I DON'T THINK THAT WOULD WORK TOO WELL IN MY FAVOR.

Hell, I thought anyone making a Podcast would be aware that people would be listening during work hours or while commuting.

You sir simply lack the appropriate dedication. Every podcast is so much better when you risk death and/or incarceration while listening!

Yah, most companies wouldn't like their staff playing drinking games during work hours I think.

that story in the second to last letter on the recent bombcast...ugh.

Yeah, that was horrifying, I thought it was funny at first when it just mentioned the gas coming out of his mouth, but then...yikes.

The problem with ingesting liquid litrogen isn't just that it's cold, it's that it expands to almost a thousand times its volume when it boils meaning it's basically like an explosion inside your stomach.

That teacher's day was probably pretty stressful as well. I hope he had tenure.

Just got done listening to this week's episode of the Bombcast at work today, and yea...that letter...I actually work with Liquid Nitrogen and would no way even try to put it in my mouth to spit it out. Just getting some spilled on my shins while pouring from one dewar to another isn't fun for a split second. But hey, it is fun to freeze grass and/or bugs and mow the lawn/shatter innocent creatures (spiders mainly...they have it coming! I'm not that maniacal...). And the first part of the cast where they are talking BBS's and "AC/DC", I could not stop fitting the band AC/DC into that conversation and gave myself some chuckles.

Episode 25 – ermahgerd, “They’re Under the Ground”

[takes retainer out] I do say, this episode is a raucous…
Well, perhaps you’ll listen to enough of this episode to understand that statement. At least that’s what we hope for.

I don't see a problem with that
