iPad Games (and Apps) Catch All

TouchArcade loves Horn.

I'm used to iOS titles having pretty barebone stories, so the atmosphere and attention to detail on Horn really stands out. I wasn't in the world for five minutes of game time before I found myself absolutely enchanted. So much so, in fact, that I found myself overlooking things like awkward controls just to spend more time investigating this wonderful world I was in.
I can't say I've heard a lot of incredible voice acting on iOS in my day, but Horn changes all that. These performances really shine, and are gorgeously completed by Wintory's soundtrack, which goes a long way towards making an interesting world that much more beautiful. Speaking of beautiful, this moody world is simply stunning to spend time in. Crumbling ruins and long-lost cities await you, and even tiny details such as a running stream beneath your feet while you cross a ledge above it really stand out.

They do point out it has some studering issues and a few other flaws but overall they really seem to love the game.

I am having trouble getting over that it is from Zynga. I just can't give them money.

I'm up for some Carcassonne. I don't have the patience to learn all the different Summoner Wars factions. :)

I bought the full pack, day 1, and still haven't got my head around ANY of it (TBH, I haven't really tried though). Ascension, Hero Academy, and Outwitters are my constant rotation for async. If any of those others are 'as easy' to pick up, let me know and I'll re-install. I have Neuroshima Hex, how tricky is that?

Honestly, you really don't need to learn ALL the different factions to enjoy playing Summoner Wars You can easily stick with one or two factions, learn them in one or two games, (there aren't that many cards - 3-4 different event types, 3 common units, and 3 champions per faction) and then learn the other factions as you play by playing against them.

It's like saying you need to learn every card in an Ascension expansion before playing it. I had no clue what the different cards were in the expansions, so I had no idea what to expect. I just played it, knowing the mechanics, and learnt as I went. Summoner Wars is no different. The actual mechanics are so straightforward compared to something like Le Havre that it shouldn't be an obstacle to play.

About Horn: I had to give up on Infinity Blade because the reflexes it demanded were too much for me. I understand Horn uses similar combat. Is it the same deal? Because I'd like to try it but I'm not going to bother if I'm going to run into the same issue.

Demyx wrote:

I'm trying real hard not to be cynical since it's Zynga, but I'm hoping the fact those screenshots looked like Infinity Blade didn't mean the game had similar gameplay...

I would say the gameplay is similar but not terrible. You roll around your enemies and then swipe a bunch to hit them, then roll away after they turn to face you, etc. and that seems a lot like IB. However there is exploration, puzzles and a story which is not at all like IB.

It shouldn't be, and yet here we are.

Actually, it's not the mechanics I don't understand... part of it is the disparity between players who DO know all of the cards/factions and HOW the work together, and those who don't. It feels to me akin to a newbie jumping into an FPS multiplayer game against those who've played the crap out of it. YES, you "learn as you go," and that's exactly what I mean when I say I don't feel like I want to invest the time into LEARNING as I go. Don't want to play 25 matches before I feel like I might be able to eke out a victory and that I'm able to compete on a level playing field.

You seem to have really clicked with Summoner Wars. That's cool. I just haven't really gotten too much enjoyment out of the games I've played against the AI so far... not enough thatI want to continue putting the effort into it.

So... Carcassonne anyone?

Sure. Send me an invite (shoptroll on Game Center).

I'm mostly thinking asynchronous board games (really?!). So far I've played a bunch of Ascension (which I'm a bit tired of) and not much more.
I'd love to get some games of Carcassonne and Neuroshima under my belt (maybe even TTR Pocket, even though it doesn't seem like a great fit for async), and then go on to heavier stuff (Caylus, Le Havre).
So if that sounds good, send me an invite! Otherwise I'll probably hunt you down myself…

Cross posting this on the iPhone thread, I'm really that determined!

I just started up on the iOS gaming, and have no Game Center friends either, other than my wife (so sad!). Feel free to hit me up as well.

I'm always up for carcassonne. Just send me a game invite.

Shoot me an invite, I will happily beat you at any number of iOS games.

Are you Teneman there as well. Let's beat each other up over some Ascension. I think I am spynavy.

I believe I'm Teneman there as well. Or I might be Jim Reed. Or both. Having trouble getting to GameCenter from the office network, I'll check in once I get home. Definitely up for some Ascension.

Excellent. I'll be bored in the evenings while on travel (Pacific Time). Prime gaming time.

And beat me you will! Despite my will to play I'm a total newbie.
I'm sending out a few challenges, three player games on Carc. It's on!

I'd be interested in a multiplayer game of Carcassonne. I've only had the opportunity to play versus one other player, and though it is fun, I'd like to try the chaos of more ( I've actually played this table top often in the past ). I also own all the expansions if that information is important.

Let me learn it against the AI and then I might be game.

SommerMatt wrote:

Fair enough. My intention wasn't to convince those for whom it hasn't clicked with to change their minds, but I did want to provide an alternate perspective to those who are thinking of picking it up and might be scared off, because I don't think the game is that difficult or the environment that competitive, and wanted to share that.

Just to back up what Dysplastic has said, I had never played before the iOS app. I was able to get up to speed to play competitively probably within the first week. Especially if you focus on one faction to start with, it is not hard to learn. And people around here are happy to give advice (and getting your ass handed to you a time or two is very instructive ).

I'm sure the game is not for everyone, but don't be scared of the barrier to entry. Having just started playing Ascension, I don't thnk it is any harder to learn. If anything, I think the consequences of your decisions are much more hidden in Ascension (it is very essy to 'play', i.e. take your turn, buy cards etc., but not so clear how to trace the roots of your success/failure), so that seems harder to 'master' to me. In Summoner Wars it is usually pretty clear what killed you :p

Eh Summoner Wars just didn't click for me. I love Ascension and have played over 300 games probably, I liked it right away. I've played 3 or 4 Summoner Wars matches and just don't feel any pull to play another one. I guess it is just not for me. I still play at least a couple of Ascension games a day.

So I picked up Nightfall for $.99 - after 6 games with the AI, I'm finally starting to understand what's going on. I'm also starting to really like it. So far, number 2 to Summoner Wars.

This game never clicked with me but send me an invite if you're looking for some MP.

I guess the main difference is that with Ascension, you can just play it as a simple card flip/biggest numbers game. I got lost in the tutorial for Summoner.

"Now it's time for X, but we won't do that now though". Why not, tell me why? I need to know?

Also, units that can only be used when aligned to, this can only do that, this card does this in this phase, but not that. I will give it another go, but it's not as easy to pick up as Ascension, of Hero Academy for that matter.

My GameCenter ID is Delerat if people are looking for more friends. Also added it to my sig with the rest of my IDs.

I've got Ascension, Neuroshima, Catan, Carccasonne, Ticket to Ride and some others.

Wow! Just got an update from AppShopper and Le Havre is on sale for $0.99 - Tigris & Euphrates is as well.

Sheesh. I gotta stop buying these boardgame apps on day one... 99 cents for Le Havre? I still haven't even played it yet!

Le Havre is a steal at 0.99. It has a very good tutorial as well.

Whoops double post!

Friendship requested! I'm up for all of the above.

Also up for this, I actually think Carc is best with more than 2 players. I don't have the expansions though...

I have no idea if I will play either of those, but at those prices... Welcome to the pile!
