Hero Academy Catch-All

Isn't learning fun?

Yeah, I learned how fast you need to take out a demoman. And don't cluster too much.

On that note, it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with all the different AOE capabilities of the various teams. The best way to position yourself can vary greatly depending on what units are out and what units are upgraded.

Woot! Got some invites. Will definitely load it up and play when I get home. Whether or not I'll be any challenge is another thing

So, the TF2 passive is pretty good...

I may have just killed and stomped 5 guys in one turn and had an action point to spare.

Great TF2 on TF2 game. I started to get worried that I wasn't going to get to your crystal.

Yeah, I had one remaining crystal at 210 hp for about 20 turns. I had it well protected and really thought I had a chance to pull that one out since i made it a priority to kill all of your AoE, but I forgot about that soldier knockback Great game though.

Now that I think about it, every single game I have lost has been to a crystal rush. I should be more proactive about protecting them. I also probably shouldn't post that here...

/me frantically scribbles notes about rushing Dyni's crystal.

Speaking of which, I've submitted my turns against 4 of you. This is kinda fun. I have no idea what I'm doing still, but I'm having fun... so that's good right?

YUP.

Sent you an invite, by the way.

I think having fun is the core mechanic on this game.

Woo, more games! You'll have to wait till I get home though. I guess I could use my phone... hmm, but then I'd miss out on all those sparkly steam achievements though...

I have like 8 or 10 games going simultaneously now... I thought it was going to be way too many for me to keep track of, but the game is structurally simple enough that there's really not much "keeping track" needed. Nice!

I'm managing to lose most of my matches, so ... Easy Wins, people!

Yeah, that hurt.

OK, so the TF2 Spy in 1 turn walked behind my ninja, killed him in 1 hit and then stomped him. He even had a damn hat on. Far out that was annoying. I can see theres going to be a lot to learn in this game.

Meaning your ninja had a hat on? That's magic defense, although it adds some health. If you mean you're offended because the spy had a jaunty hat on then I agree, that's a pisser.

KAL9000 is my username! I'm up for some games so send away.

You max out at 40 concurrent games.. Yep.. I'm a fan of this game.

BlackSablre, that's me that sent you an invite to play, I noticed you posting here and tossed you into the rotation, sorry if I should have given you a heads-up here. (I though I'd mentioned GWJ in the game invite..)

As for the TF2 team, it's definitely an oddball team that defies the most simplistic team deployment patterns. Especially with no one figure doing massive amounts if damage after an upgrade (Spy backstab aside).. That an I have to remember that respawns are free to use, and stops give you those action points, I keep forgetting that.

I'm still finding my legs with this game. It's fun to log in and make some moves, but so far I think I'm failing miserably with most of them. I haven't really developed an overarching strategy yet. It just feels like every turn something new is completely surprising me.

It constantly does, and that's after playing it for a loooong time too. I remember when my finger slipped (not --> but) on a game with the Counselor, and all of a sudden we both discovered that particular map had offensive capabilities. It was great.

So how come on Steam, the packs at $4.99, yet on IOS, they're $1.99?

I can't buy from my iphone as it's a work phone. Not that I need the other packs as I'm still happy getting my ass kicked with the default 2, but it just seems silly.

iOS, you only get the characters for that price. You then have to buy all the other extra avatar portraits separately, in groups of 4 I think, for an additional 99c each if you want to truly compare oranges to oranges in what you're getting. If you were looking to buy 'the complete' set of items for each character, Steam is cheaper by far, BUT, you might not want all those silly little pics, so you are denied choice for the cheaper bundle.

I also think the steam purchase unlocks TF2 themed hats for each team too.

TLDR:
iOS is cheaper if you only want the teams that do battle.
Steam is the cheaper 'bundle', but it can't be split.

This game is a lot of fun but the lesson it's taught me is that asynchronus games just aren't for me. I think after I finish my initial 7 or 8 games I'll probably be done with it.

Why is that?

I'm pretty sure I'd be a lot less invested in this game if it wasn't on my phone at a moment's notice, but in that regard, it's fantastic.

Having been lacking the time to sit at my computer and play -- I find myself REALLY wanting that Android version.

Non-portability kills momentum. While it's asynchronous, it doesn't seem like the kind of game that should sit for days.

One, I don't buy Apple products and there is no Android version so no on the go version for me.

Two, I'm not the most patient of gamers. I can handle slow pacing. I love skirmishes in Sins of a Solar Empire even if they go on for four hours. I can do that. But I can do that because there's an end in sight. I can sit down, start a game, and then finish it that night. With this... I sit down, submit a turn, and then wait. And wait. The I minimize it and do something else. Go back three hours later. Nope, still no turns submitted. The I check the next day and still no turns submitted. At that point I just get bored with it and don't bother even opening the game for days at a time.

The whole structure bothers me. I like the mechanics and the rest of the game but really dislike not sitting down and playing a match out to completion.

Like I said, just not for me.

An, I forgot there is no Android version.

That makes sense. I gave up on Frozen Synapse on PC for the same reason. The beauty of having it on iOS, besides the portability, is the instant notification that you have a turn ready to play, so there is no need to check on it.

Apologies to anyone I've been playing with in the last several weeks. I've been busy and let my matches lapse and forfeit. Plus I've been distracted with Summoner Wars.

Hoping to get back into this soon.

To be honest, the asynchronous nature of the game really appeals to me. I can log in before bed and just before I go to work and make all my moves. Sometimes I'll get a notification during the day and I'll hop onto the iPhone app and try a few combos out. Plus, it means I can play with GWJers. My timezone doesn't normally give me that.

Have to admit, of all the matches so far, I hate Dyni's the most. You sir are a jerk! You just seem to be doing something every turn which messes me up.

I'm just trying to give you a proper introduction to the wonderful world of Hero Academy. Sounds like I'm doing a good job
