Rocksmith Catch All

Does it work by having someone else log into their account and everything? This will be great for when I have friends over to play.

Yup. It's not just a "dumb partner" like the singing mode.

Wait wait. You can play guitar and bass at the sme time? Are you kidding me?

I was playing with my son tonight, but I just played from tab on my acoustic while he played bass.

I'm not sure of the details, but that's the impression I get.
I have two cables and I'm hoping to get my wife on board for a couple songs of guitar/bass tonight once I figure out how to log two players on with different instruments.

From the Rocksmith Bass FAQ:

Can I play guitar and bass at the same time in multiplayer?
Absolutely! With the new bass content, you can play with any combination of guitar and bass during multiplayer.

Guess I'll be picking up a second cable in short order.

I present you some crappy cell phone pictures:

Has anyone tried playing bass tracks with a regular 6 string guitar? I'm curious if that's a satisfying experience or odd-feeling kluge.

Secondary Cable: ORDERED.

I've piddled around on a bass for a few years and the only song I ever really could play was With or Without You which took like 5 min. to learn to play. On my second try of Gold on the Ceiling by The Black Keys I got 86,045. I had never tried playing with a pick on my bass before that song but it was a ton of fun just need to get the fingers back into playing shape now.

I've got a spare Fender Squire Jazz Bass I'd sell anyone in the KC area.

Where did you order it from? I can't find one locally, it's the game bundle only : (

You can get them from Amazon, but I'm not sure if that works for you given your location.

I've played through 3 events on the bass expansion so far, and I'm having a blast. It works just as expected, and the ability to switch between bass and guitar on the fly is an unexpected bonus. The whole package feels very polished now, despite the fact that the interface is still a bit wonky at times.

Perhaps the best part of the bass expansion is that it's breathed new life into the songs. I've gained a whole new appreciation for a lot of the tracks I've been playing on guitar for months. I'm tired of the guitar tremolos on "Do You Remember" (especially since the game loves to slot it in to what seems like every other guitar event) but the bass line for that song is awesome!

I would wager that if Mex couldn't get it shipped direct, finding a middle man wouldn't be that hard.

First hint is out for the 8/21 DLC: "This band's classic rock hits were released on an San Fran based jazz label."

I think we're talking Creedence Clearwater Revival, my friends!

EDIT: If we get Fortunate Son, I'll be over the moon.

Amazon was my goto. I told my son we could play together and he nearly levitated.

Family band name: Murdoch Murder!

Question for the community

I have been playing guitar for the better part of 15 years now and would consider myself fairly adept. I picked up rocksmith at launch to learn some new songs and struggled with some of the game choices that were made. There have been improvements since launch and I have just picked it up again.

One thing that I continue struggle with is the choice of position that the game decides on. For example, I decided that I would learn crossroads and fired up the riff repeater. The notes that it chooses to display tend to move up and down the frets as opposed to up and down the strings (hopefully this makes sense). When I go on youtube to watch a video it is played as I would expect.

Am I missing something here or does the game make the songs more difficult (I realize this is my interpretation of what difficult is) than they need to be?

thanks

Any time transcription is done it's going to be filtered through the person doing the transcription. I'd bet the Clapton doesn't even play things in the same position every time as with that kind of experience you just know how to get the music you want without thinking about positions and licks. I don't know what Youtube videos you're watching, if it's performances or just random Youtubers, but I thought I had read the Rocksmith transcribers study performance videos in addition to the ear-based transcription.

But it sounds like Rocksmith might challenge you to improve your horizontal playing. Certainly not a bad thing. With 15 years experience though, if you're really wanting to learn songs you should be doing your own transcription anyway.

Also:

CCR - "Born on the Bayou"
Iron Butterfly - "In A Gadda Da Vida"
Allman Bros. - "Whipping Post"

Also, Rocksmith tracks notes, not where you play them. So as long as you hit the correct notes, you are good to go. Helps me when I get tired and go all lazy fretter, I can still do decent.

So play the songs the way you know, it's all the same to the game.

So does In A Gadda Da Vita have the 10 minute drum solo?

Here's a dirty little rock and roll secret. I've spent some time working through Justin's stuff (justinguitar.com) over the years, including his transcription series. I often will get something down, then go to youtube and see things differently.

But then, I started looking at DIFFERENT live recordings of the same guitarists playing the same licks on different parts of the fretboard, situationally, or at different times in their career. I can't remember which I was transcribing, but there was some clapton lick there are videos of him playing at two entirely different positions. And Mick Ronson (Ziggy Stardust) plays the super simple "cats from japan" lick seemingly intermittently entirely on E (hitting 5th/7th fret) or using open A and 2nd fret on A.

SO in other words, play it like it sounds, if you don't like the Rocksmith transcription.

Thanks all - I have been playing items as they sound. I have now watched many videos and tutorials on crossroads and it looks like most people are playing it with a lot of bends and pulls/hammers which is what I would have expected and tend to do myself. It's a bit tough, but I have been doing a lot of the on the fly transcribing. Another thing that helped was turning on all of the complexity of the song (just wish I could manually pause/rewind etc...)

Out of curiosity, what song are you playing? Last I checked "Crossroads" wasn't in Rocksmith. Is there some DLC or secret unlockable I missed?

Maybe that's why it looks wrong! I'd guess he meant Run Back to Your Side.

Either that or Sunshine of Your Love?

I really WOULD love to see Crossroads in there at some point, come to think of it.

Tales of Brave Ulysses?

yeah my bad - meant Run back to your Side

It's a pretty awesome song but it's probably up there with the toughest ones, I can play most of it but it took me a while to get the last solo right, it's harsh

So on a whim I picked up a used Fender Squier Jaguar bass guitar, as I really enjoyed 'playing' the bass in Rockband. Turns out, I absolutely fracking love playing the bass guitar. It fulfills my need for a rhythm instrument, and is just melodic enough to be really satisfying to play. I'm also doing a hell of a lot better with bass than I was standard guitar, which is satisfying. I actually managed to get Master-Mode on a song after about a week of mucking about with RS, and then tried my hand at the Silver Sun Pickups song, which handed my arse to me in no uncertain terms.

The interface still makes me want to punch babies, but I think they've done a fantastic job with the bass support!

Speaking of bass playing, I've been working on slaps and pops. The tutorial says that slaps are supposed to be played near the fretboard, with the thumb parallel to the string, striking the string with the knuckle of the thumb. I've been trying that, and the smack of the string into the fretboard seems like it's screwing with the sound for me. Am I hitting it too hard, or is that the way it's supposed to sound? Seems like if I didn't want it to hit the fretboard, I'd be striking much closer to the bridge. Any hints from the bass players in the crowd?

This video is kinda dry, but the guy keeps it really simple, so I think it would be good for beginners:

(The actual technique training kicks in at about 40 seconds.)
