The All New Gabriel Newell's Digital Wonder Emporium, aka, The Steam Update Thread

It's all to do with the Community, so I wouldn't expect anything that will blow your mind.

The best I'm hoping for is a friends list overhaul, but I don't think the odds are good. They seem really unwilling to change much of anything with the actual client.

I'd guess day 3 will be another community update thing but day 4 will be something a bit more interesting/fun although I don't reckon it'll be a game release (date) announcement.

Best possible thing might be the announcement of the start of a new ARG?

Group Discussions are a nice addition.. if most of my groups didn't already have a forums somewhere. :p

I guess their aim with that is twofold, bring all those discussions onto steam, and give any community a forum without the need for a website.

Yep, I think that feature could be cool.

I still say that tagging is the number one feature that I cannot believe they are still missing. Tag games, tag people, tag groups, tag assets, tag everything! Public tags, personal tags, etc.

Uh... you should try right-clicking on a friend sometime... tagging has been in for a while.

Though it would be nice to be able to tag games. The current Category setting is just too limiting.

Why would a community update be a game announcement? The page even says:

Each day we're previewing a set of features from the new Community update.

Why do people always needlessly get their hopes up for anything involving Valve?

And the fact that I cannot search my friends list, 9 years later, is inexcusable!

What's wrong with the Search box that's just above the "Friends" and "Groups" tab on your Friends list window? Works decently for me -- searches by username and by game playing.

I don't know what box you're using, but mine returns global results. There is no way, that I could find, to search only through "friends" or "group" names.

Sorry, I should've been more clear. In the Steam UI, go to menu Friends -> View Friends List. It's certainly strange that the search box isn't on the "Friends" page under Community, but the dedicated Friends List window works pretty well for me -- and is available in the Steam Overlay (Shift-Tab) while in-game.

And also you can search through groups by being on the groups page. So those times when you're looking for a goodjer to add to a game group that you aren't friends with you can go to the general gwj group , click on members down at the bottom and search there, and it will only find people in the group. Obviously use the search box down below the Member List heading, not the general search that's always up on the top right.

Friends list is as merphle said. Although that search box on the actual friend list has only been there for maybe a year or less, it has been there a while now.

Hm sounds like nothing new, but just consolidating some features for better access.

Cool, I am just fine with them moving closer to a gamer social network, I think the last two days will be features that move closer to it. My bet is tomorrow some more features that move it closer to Facebook type of thing and then Friday is social achievement, stuff like during the summer sale only larger

If day 4 isn't a look at a new profile layout, I'll eat a hat.

Not my hat. I love my hat.

Only one more day.

So badges?

We don't need, etc.

Link your facebook account! [Community Badge]

Tell us your age, DOB, ethnicity, yearly salary and marital status! [Identity Badge]

We're not facebook, we won't sell your details for money! [Reamed Badge]

Sorry, just "social network" is a bad term for me nowadays...

Why not? They just forced us all into mandatory arbitration right? It's not like we have any rights concerning Steam anymore.

:p

Funnily enough, that's the one hoop I haven't jumped through for that badge.

I jumped through it as soon as it was offered for the additional artificially scarce friends list capacity.

Day 4, Friend Activity: http://steamcommunity.com/communityc...

I guess I need to eat a hat. In my defense, I believe I was close.

Unless they tie this to the in-client friends list, it won't be nearly as useful as it could be. Status updates sound great... if people could see them without needing to visit a stupid webpage.

Edit: Test pages here

Beta invites going out to the first 50,000 people who finished the Pillar of the Community badge. So if that's one of you, I wants it.

But does Steambook do a "toast" pop-up every time to let you know that AzzK1CK3R1337 has posted a status update?

Huh. Invites in Steam or to e-mail?

Definitely got that Pillar badge on the first day of the summer sale, first day it was available. But that might not be quick enough.

Probably Steam.

WE CAN ONLY HOPE

Yeah, I think the last one was either check the Steam sale every day or vote every day. You would have needed to have been on the ball to be one of the first 50,000. That's not very many. I would assume they'd send you an invite through Steam, and you'd see it in your Steam inbox.

That was the Summer Sale badge, tuffalo.

Yeah, I'm sure those first 50,000 were gone within a hour of the update coming out. :p

The new friend's page is pretty... but it looks like a glorified Blotter. I was hoping they'd rearrange it a bit more. Give screenshots and videos their own room and pushing the achievements and new games more to the side. Or something.

Oh well, still can't wait to get my hands on it.

With this new activity feed, I just realized how annoyingly ambiguous that "New" indicator above Friends and Community is. That's going to be a constant presence for those with a certain number of friends.

Now I'm even more mad that they didn't recognize existing screenshots and videos for that.
