Tower defense games

I looked at it too Stele.
It has nice quirk to it and it also appears to have interesting level layout, and a good variety of weapons and abilities.

Steam Daily Deal, Unstoppable Gorg for $2.49 (75% off).

Tower defense, in spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace.

I dunno, but I'm going to try the demo. Anybody played it? Thoughts?

I've played - the mechanic seems more exciting in the videos than I found it to be in person. It get's pretty repetitive, but was fun for a few hours. If possible, I'd recommend the iPad version over the PC.

On a related note, anyone tried Tower Wars?

I'm having an odd error with Defense Grid, and wanted to see if you fine ladies and gentlemen could help. Whenever I launch the game, it immediately minimizes. No matter how many times I try to maximize, it continues to minimize back down. I can't find an answer on the Steam forums (I'm sure I'm just missing it), but thought you all might have ideas.

Is this where we talk about Defender's Quest: Valley of the Forgotten? OMG it's so awesome. I've lost all evening to it.

Warcraft3 had the best TD games I've ever played. I dont know how big the community still is but it was always awesome playing with 7 other players each trying to defend their own entrances. There are 100s if not 1000s of different maps/mods. I've played a lot of TD since then and I can say in my opinion nothing even comes close the the Warcraft 3 maps/mods. It's worth checking out at least.

THE BEST party based RPG Tower Defense game I've yet to come across. Well worth the effort, if you like tinkering with RPG parties and watching them perform in a Tower Defense situation.

I've been chipping away at the NG+ mode of Defender's Quest. It's a lot of fun and adds even more content to the story! At first I thought I was overleveled because I was acing all of the extreme missions and my guys were rather high level from achievement hunting in the normal game. But I quickly hit a wall, the difficulty in NG+ ramps up VERY fast.

Yeah I've been doing the more challenging battles through the main story so far. Although I hit a wall there where I couldn't' finish the last difficulty of this one mission. For a few missions I was starting off on Advanced, but had to scale that back again.

Although I just got a

dragon

added to my party. Surely that will help me go back and crush earlier levels.

+2. Definitely a great buy. The story is a bit quirky, but entertaining. The game mechanics are solid.

Hopefully, he finishes up the sequel soon and we can look forward to an even better game!

We had a thread for Defender's Quest, but didn't get much traffic, sadly.

Oh couldn't find it with the search, but it was late last night.

Just got a gift of a game code for Tower Wars from Antichulius.

I finished the tutorial. The art style is very cool for the towers, but you gotta zoom in a bit too see how cool the art style is for the attackers.
However, I'm trying to imagine playing against another human and ... I'd really love a fellow newbie to play against.

If you haven't seen the game set up, it's way cool. You have some gold mines to earn your gold, not from destroying invaders. Because...while you are setting up your towers, you're also launching your groups of invaders at the other guy (while he sets up his towers against your guys, and send some guys to hit you).

The upgradey-ness (it could be a word) seems a bit too complicated to read while playing. As your guys travel his highway, you earn battlepoints. These (and gold) can be spent to:

upgrade all your guys with a myriad of little bonus categories available for upgrade
unlock new guys (you start with grunts only)
upgrade gold mines (but when you do, buy new miners...it eats your old ones which I didn't notice, when it upgrades)

Meanwhile, you pick guys to load into your "launch tube/queue", but you don't pay the gold until your launch time count hits 0 seconds, and then you pay for the whole queue of guys at once (so you launch in waves). I didn't really count carefully, but lets say you have 20 slots of launch-i-ness, you can send 20 grunts, or 10 knights (2 slots), or 6 bigger guys and a couple grunts. Some of the guys I unlocked had effects on everyone else in line, and they march in the order you pick, so by the end of my tutorial I was launching:

2 knights, healer guy, bonus minstrel/bard guy, 2 knights, healer guy, 2 knights, bard, 2 knights or something like that.

You can also upgrade your castle (what's at the end of the line on your side), which has its own auto cannons, hps, armor, and all that.

And of course...you can upgrade towers, cause otherwise what are you doing. And of course you can block off paths, see the glowy path, and herd the invaders around as per usual. (though the maps look cool, and I think could take some planning. the fact that you're also sending guys at him, and MUST, to get your battle points made me plan...much less.)

I'm assuming i'd be destroyed by someone with real hours put in, so first to master the basics, and see what little bonuses are worth it. The timer thing actually helps alot, because while you're waiting to launch your wave of guys, you're building and upgrading and unlocking, while trying to save enough cash to launch on time.

SOL Survivor is having a free weekend.

While i dont know much about this whole genre It is the only game i play co-op with my cousin and we have a blast.

Cursed Treasure 2 is out and it is just as fantastic and free as cursed treasure 1.

I think it is armor games but I play it on onemorelevel.com

Wow this thread died a bit huh?

Finally fired up Defense Grid 2, which I've had since release (Thanks, Mantid). Got gold on all the first 2 chapters last night, even first among friends on a couple missions.

So I definitely see there's a dozen or so of you around here that have played the game, but didn't see any talk about it?

Does anyone know any games that offer TD's like Warcraft 3 used to? With 6+ player maps and some variety.

DOTA 2, even if you're not in it for the main game, actually recently introduced Custom Maps, and I see tons of people adding TDs.

Creeper World is a nice one if you guys are looking for something different. It is more like using towers to hold back gelatinous ooze instead of a line of enemies. I think #3 is the only one on Steam but I recently bought the trilogy directly from the developer and I've worked my way through #1 and most of #2 and I've more than got my money's worth. They have free demos too.

I couldn't get into DG2. I am not sure why, I liked the first one and put at least 20 hours into it, but with 2 I think the UI and complications put me off. I tried it twice and just didn't click even thought I was a kickstarter backer and wanted to like it.

Seconding Creeper World III, amazing game once you get used to the new mechanics and one of the best tower defence UIs I've ever had the pleasure to manage. To give you some idea of how it works, when placing towers you don't simply have to put them down one at a time, oh no. You can click and drag lines of towers and the game will automatically skip unusable land tiles and even space them evenly for optimum coverage.

Two other good ones are Kingdom Rush which is the same as the mobile game with everything unlocked and the graphics HDified. And Gemcraft, which has a ludicrous amount of depth I have only just scratched the surface of.

Unstoppable Gorg is one of my favorite tower defense games that a lot of people haven't played. It puts an interesting spin (bad pun) on tower defense by having rotatable rings that the towers are built on. It gives a bit of a hand on feel as the player isn't only placing towers.

Upthread someone said it was repetitive - I'm not sure if I thought so or not, but it definitely didn't diminish my enjoyment of the game.

Do you mean the iOS Gemcraft or the one on Steam for Windows ('Gemcraft - Chasing Shadows')?

Thirding Creeper World III. It's a very smart and engaging game.

Also, because it's been a while since it's come up, Defender's Quest is a joy to play.

Cursed treasure 2!
Do not pass go. Do not collect 200$.
CT2 is the bomb and one of the most feature rich TDs to date.

Agreed. Once of the few TD games that I have played to completion through the story. Along with Defense Grid, Orcs Must Die, Plants Vs Zombies, and Sanctum.

Hm, all those games got sequels didn't they?

Gemcraft - Chasing Shadows

I was afraid you would say that, since it doesn't have an OSX version.

You can play it free online.

It's a great game.

3MA had a session on Tower Defense the other day with GWJ's very own Sean Sands on board.

There was some discussion in the forums afterwards, and I stuck up a list of a load of indie TD games/hybrids worth looking at for the novelty/pushing the envelope with the TD genre.
