Curiosity on Mars

Is anyone else geeked about this? I mean, I think XBOX Live is actually broadcasting the touchdown live.

More from The Economist

You mean they are broadcasting the touchdown 14 minutes late :D.

I had no idea this was even happening. Winder if it's even getting news coverage 'down here'.

Admittedly, I haven't seen or read the news in almost 4 years now.

I was following the spacecraft on twitter. It posted some fun stuff. (I know it wasn't REALLY the spacecraft but I can imagine, right!)

I am extremely excited about this. I doubt I'll be able to stay up to watch it live (and I have to work in the morning) but the landing is a huge deal for so many reasons.

I'm also excited. I really hope they will pull it off, and I think I will try to stay up and watch the show. If it lands as expected, the amount of information we will get from it over the next two years or so will be astonishing.

Yeah looking forward to staying up tonight and watching this.

As has been mentioned on twitter and facebook a lot this week, NASA is broadcasting a live landing on Mars with far less delay than NBC is showing the Olympics from London.

EDIT: Here's the official stream

There's a live news conference on for the last half hour, and for another half hour. Then it will be replayed throughout the afternoon.

Actual coverage of mission control, etc is starting in 10.5 hours from this post. (no more editing)

I'll be watching. My current interest in Kerbal Space Program has amped up my already ludicrous enthusiasm for this mission.

I can't imagine being part of a project of this magnitude. Years and years in the making, in essence, coming down to 14 measily minutes.

If you happen to log into the nasa signal RIGHT NOW you're in for a treat

Sounds like when we were trying for our first kid...

Spoiler:

Talking it up, you know, the 14 minute part.

SETI has a live hangout going here:

Not sure I am going to make it to landing, but I am totally geeked about this.

Wish I could I could stay up for this, but I have a rough day at work in the morning.

Looking forward to checking out the news when I wake.

Good luck Curiosity!

The big Astronomy Cast/Bad Astronomer hangout feed is starting at 11 EST here:

I am so excited. I might be late for work tomorrow. (East coast, yay.)

If anyone wants to see where Curiosity is right now in 3D, NASA has a pretty interesting little app called "Eyes on the Solar System".

Right now it's about 21,000 miles away from Mars and cruising at the leisurely pace of 8,701 mph.

OG that is awesome.

Welp, I'm heading to bed, I hope that I wake up to great news!

Nice find OG_slinger, that is slick stuff.

Stream has started, 10 min ago.

Obviously still 2 hours to touchdown. But live programming on NASA TV

Also, Android App, if you're on a device with Flash (sorry Nexus 7).

I'm watching NASA TV!

Y'all should join us in IRC.

Has anyone tried the Mars Rover Landing XBox thing? (XBox Live Marketplace)

If I didn't have to be up for work in the morning, I would stay up and watch the landing. I'm hoping there are seats available at the presentation at the local planetarium tomorrow morning.

I am sooo geeking out right now.

I am meant to focusing on a client deadline right now, so I have both Eyes on the Solar System and the Virtual Landing Party running on my second monitor while trying to concentrate.

This is seriously awesome.

I've got Virtual Landing Party, NASA TV, and TWIT running, between my TV and computer. TWIT isn't live yet but they were saying they would have live coverage. I don't think it'll be better than NASA TV or VLP but I enjoy them.

Woo, Dr. Pamela Gay and Frasier Cain! I love Astronomy Cast.

The missus and I are watching the stream on the JPL website now, with the aid of some margaritas. Landing should be at 10:30 local time, so I'm hoping we get good news before it gets too late.

My girlfriend and I are both tired but we've got the Xbox stream up which is working very well. I have no idea why Microsoft is doing this since it doesn't seem to be laden with advertising or anything else but mega kudos to them for doing this. We're drinking rum & cokes and waited to have our taco dinner until past 10pm cause we knew we'd be up so late.

It's hilarious watching a bunch of these scientists who clearly haven't had much media training trying to do their bits but it's pretty cool. There's also totally a dude on the flight team with a multi-coloured mohawk and that's badass.

Watching the Astronomy Cast/Bad Astronomer hangout feed, too!
So geeked!

Ok I'm staying up for it. And incredible find OG... so awesome.
