Star Trek Online Catch-All

Ferengi Lock Box - Gold
"This lockbox was available from April 12, 2012, to July 18, 2012."

Per the wiki, took about 2 minutes to find that.

For the record, Matt, the overall fleet leader, wasn't amused by Sypok's response.

Keep in mind the truth is a three edged sword. I would rate the SFEF fleet as about average for a MMO guild, nothing to write home about, but nothing complain about either. Its active enough on the Fed side of the game to be worth being in, which is my major criteria for a MMO guild. However superior a GWJer guild would be, there isn't an active one, and from what I've seen, GWJer guilds tend to rather short lived and/or sporadic at best, looking at games like WoW, SWTOR or Rift.

I echo Warhound's sentiment. For the most part, the people in SEF seem even-minded, and the fact there are frequent events organized and people on is a plus. There's a few people I don't care for, but overall it's pretty good for an MMO.

So I have only dabbled in MMO's. Tried some LoTRO, some DDO, and SWtOR. Was affiliated with a large group playing SWtOR but still felt like I wasn't playing enough (1-2 times a week for 4-8 hours) and ultimately felt like I got left behind in the charge to Max Level so I canceled my sub.

So I still have the bug and the idea playing in the ST universe seems very appealing to me. So the question is can a new player have fun in this game or is it realy just for existing players to enjoy what content remains?

Think there's plenty of incentive to jump in now still. There are some really great story missions in this game, involving threads from the old shows. Just experiencing some of those alone is worth spending a couple weeks playing this, if you're a mild Trek fan even.

I'm doing just the Free2Play side of the game, having bought the game retail prior to the F2P conversion. Actually paying money may change your game experience. That said...

The game is pretty good for a new player. The leveling process has been streamlined, you could just play the story arc missions, and level to 50 that way. You'll get enough gear, equipment and money that way to pay for what you need, so its very casual friendly that way.

In fact, its actually too easy to level up. I have an alt that is level 28, and got most of his levels basically 'afk', thanks to the duty officer system. But, the content scales to your level, so its not a big problem.

Lots to do, between story arcs, duty officers, the Foundry (user created missions), almost too many dailies and figuring out how to play the 'roles' the ships fall into. If you can't find something to do at each level, then the odds are you forgot to log into the game. Yep, that's the desktop you are staring at.

The worst part is figuring out which of the three career paths you want, Tactical/Engineering/Science. Easy answer, go engineering to bring in heavy weapons for ground missions, and for space, it really won't matter. You won't 'gimp' yourself there.

Yes, most players are 50, yes, most of the focus for the group is on the level 50+ stuff, that's just the way it is in MMOs, unless you get into the game early. Even so, there is enough PUG activity that you won't have to skip much, except maybe PvP - that's rather unpopular right now, but hey, that's also common to MMOs.

This is definitely a good way to see it. I dropped $200 on a lifetime sub(which I do feel was well spent), but for any trek fan, the game is phenomenal F2P. Roll a character, play through all the story missions, and enjoy playing the show you loved so much. Everything else? Meh on it, I say. But the PvE episodes are some of the best single player content in an MMO ever if you ask me.

I logged in tonight and checked some Fleet Permissions. I adjusted things so that anyone Lieutenant or higher in "Captains With Jobs" can "Donate To Fleet Projects."

Thus, my assumption is that anyone should be capable of contributing toward a Fleet Starbase now.

If someone could check to see if they're able to do things with the Starbase, that'd be stellar (bah! punny...). Thanks!

So does this mean that we have two fleets vying for position within the GWJ community? Starfleet Elite Force (SEF) and Captains With Jobs (CWJ)?

Heh. Naw. I just wanted to highlight that others are capable of contributing now if they wanted to dabble in the system.

Personally, I don't play STO all that much, but I did want to at least dabble in starbases. And I couldn't do so because of the restrictions (until recently). The restriction on contributions to Fleet Bases are lifted now, though, hopefully making it easier to get things done for a group that perhaps isn't as active as others.

If folks wanna go participate in SEF, by all means, do so. We don't have regular groups getting together (that I'm aware of) and SEF appears to be more active, so depending on your level of commitment, it may be the better choice. For those that aren't participating in SEF, I just wanted to open up starbase contributions to everyone (or nearly everyone).

I was looking at the Starbase stuff in GWJ fleet Monday, and I'm pretty sure I had the option to contribute stuff.

No. SFEF is a seperate, non-GWJer fleet that some GWJers have joined. CWJ is the usual inactive GWJer fleet. Neither of which could be said to be 'vying for position within the GWJ community' because SFEF probably isn't aware GWJ exits, and CWJ doesn't have enough activity to notice.

Captains With Jobs has been, and will be the GWJ fleet. If folks want to go where there's more folks, they're welcome to(and always have been). I don't see a need to try to boost the numbers by recruiting folks in to boost activity when there are better options out there.

Agreed. 100%.

So who do I talk to about getting into the Captains With Jobs fleet?

I think everyone has invite rights, but only admiral and above can promote. So just post your name@name and someone can get you in.

I've seen you playing via Steam sometimes, namikaze. I'll watch out for you. Otherwise, post your username here and we'll get you in.

I'm Jolan@ilduce620.

Right on, I'll keep an eye out in-game for members of the fleet. Just in case, my character is Andrus@namikaze. I'll look for you on Steam, doc.

So I'm returning to the game after a long hiatus. Since Season 3 I think.

I have 3 level 50's, what do I need to do to get their gear up to speed? The guides I've found tend to be outdated.

I actually donated about 40 fleet marks and a few DOs to the starbase last night; it's getting close to becoming a tier 1 base.

Yay! I can't wait.

Beam me up scotty, downloading it for my laptop! I wanna build a base.

So, apparently I'm missing some part of how the bases are made; I finished the project, we got 1000 starbase XP, I think, and... nothing happened? The project reset?.

Edit: Ahh, apparently the "Starbase Military XP" is separate from the "Starbase XP". and we have to complete a first tier in one of the fields to actually build said starbase.

Well, I haven't been on in a bit, but I logged in and completed out a few things in the Military project. All we need now is about 150 fleet marks.

Ok, ok, you talked me into it. I downloaded the F2P version (used to have a paid account for 5 minutes). I only played the tutorial again, and except for the FPS option it seems exactly the same so far.

Not to worry (as I'm sure everyone was), I do intend to give STO a fair amount of game time around. So for someone who played the game when it first came out and hasn't touched it since, what are the major changes I can expect?

Budo wrote:

Big changes that I noticed were:

Ground combat now has a third-person "shooter" mode, by pressing B. Your left and right mouse buttons will now fire your primary and secondary weapon modes, respectively. Also, you can shoot without having a target selected. Makes support a little trickier, but the ground combat is more fun this way, imo.

Skills were overhauled at some point, so you might want to spend some time familiarizing yourself with them. The ranks in skills are a little more valuable, and the skills now have the ability to train for your Bridge Officers.

Ship interiors are now finished, to the point where your ship now has two decks in addition to the bridge - they're accessible via turbolift. Also, you can mount trophies on the wall of your captain's ready room just off the bridge.

Duty Officers are a huge change - these are non-essential personnel that you can task with various responsibilities. When they complete these assignments, you'll get some credits, some experience, and sometimes some items. There's a lot there, but it's not as complicated as it looks at first.

Yep, one of the best changes. Now you spec skills for all ships instead of just tac, sci, or eng, so you can actually mix things up a bit if you want instead of being stuck with one type of ship the whole game.

I haven't checked today, but can a CWJ Fleet Admiral get the tactical job for the fleet starbase re-activated? I want to keep pushing that section forward.

I added "Practice Tactical Exercises" as a Tactical job. I'll queue up the others, too. Enjoy! And thanks!

I started playing this game this past week and had never played an MMORPG before. I have put five hours solo in so far and though I did not have high expectations for the game based on both reviews and an LP series (http://lparchive.org/Star-Trek-Online/), I'm not finding it that much fun. In particular, the gameplay seems less like a game and more like busywork. Does the game improve with any of the following:

  • Time (later seasons/missions)
  • Playing with other people
  • Something else

?

There are some great story missions with cameos by show characters, be it regulars, or aliens the various crews ran into. Those are the missions you should be trying to do.

Combat gets a little more involved and fun as you get more abilities at levels 10, 20, 30, and can upgrade the officers in your ship stations or that fight with you. In space I have 3 full trays of commands and probably 2 full ones on the ground.

If you don't enjoy the Trek shows and flavor quite a bit to start out though, I could see it not hooking you in for the long run.
