Ninokuni: The Another World (Ghibli + Level 5 RPG) coming to PS3

We've been talking a bit about Toki Tori (aka Time & Eternity) in the JRPG thread and on IRC. I'd love to see it show up in the US.

Toki Tori? Don't think that's the correct name. That's a puzzle platformer game.

Tokitowa, or Toki to Towa. Oops.

God damn it. $108.89 just disappeared from my bank account. :D

Hurray! And the preorders are already over halfway to the goal for the next bonus (which appears to be a set of 5 Ni No Mini prints)!

Well, the ninostarter doesn't seem to be doing very well. It's at 2856 Fans which is only 62% to the first goal.

Well, it is $100 and the game is quite far away from release. It's an interesting idea nonetheless.

An interesting turn of events just occurred: they lowered the threshold since now it is 2859 and 83%!!

This is good news as it looks like they want to include more things regardless of how well this idea is doing!

Is this the same Ninokuni that came out for the DS a while back? Other than some basic familiarity via the 8-4 Play podcast I don't know why I would want to get this game, much less pre-order a $100 version.

It never came out in America on DS, just overseas. The reason most people are excited for it is that Studio Ghibli is involved (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, etc).

To be clear this is a completely different game than the DS one. The one that's coming up is for the PS3.

If Lard was still here we could change the title to the thread, but we've been using this to discuss both Ni no Kuni games.

Ok. What is the gameplay? I haven't seen those movies. I do like Level-5. I was a huge fan of Jeanne D'Arc. But that's my only real affinity for anyone involved with this project. I need to watch those movies, I know. I just haven't gotten to it.

From a gameplay perspective it's a bog standard JRPG from Level-5. This is all about the art and story.

This is the only video you need to watch:

Nice. Not going to spend $100 on it, but I'm definitely going to pick it up on release. Love me some Ghibli.

Oh wait, I know Ghibli. I haven't seen their other movies. They're all in my Netflix queue. But I saw Arrietty this year and I loved it.

you must watch spirited away immediately. In fact leave work right now.

Seconded, although, I vote to watch Howl's Moving Castle first.

I vote you watch both at the same time.

Actually, Princess Mononoke might be my favorite. I can't decide. They're all so good.

I vote that you let the two movies watch each other.

Both, plus Porco Rosso, then you watch Princess Mononoke with no distractions whatsoever. Full list is here.

They're all on the way via Netflix. I'll take them with me on my iDevice during my European vacation. Since I love Level-5 and loved Arrietty, though, I went ahead and joined the NinoStarter.

If you can, watch them with the Japanese language track and subtitles. It's not a deal breaker if you can't or don't want to, though. Normally, I can't stand dubs, but the Ghibli stuff is actually pretty well done.

You're a good man. The more the merrier!

I don't want to prolong the Ghibli discussion out any further than it's already gone, but don't listen to people when they tell you which one is the best or should be watched first because we all have our favorites and a person new to their work should pick something that seems interesting to them. Also, people new to Ghibli should watch all the films Miyazaki directed, including things like Kiki's Delivery Service which I think males and females can enjoy even though it looks and sounds really "girly".

I agree, for the most part. Which is why I just handed him the list. However, there are some that are more "accessible" than others. I would not hit someone new to Ghibli with Pom Poko or Grave of the Fireflies. Hence the suggestions.

Grave of the Fireflies was fantastic, but the single most utterly depressing film I have ever watched. I was shocked that an animated film could leave me feeling physically ill after watching it. It haunted me for days, and even still when I remember the movie I feel a little sick inside.

Don't let that dissuade anyone from watching it; just be sure you're in the right frame of mind if you do.

I would suggest watching this one alone, too. It's an extremely powerful movie and intensely personal. I'm not sure if personal is the word I'm looking for. The viewer's relationship with the story and characters is very important.

I is sad now.

Wait, which dubs? The Japanese dubs? You're saying watching them in Japanese with English subtitles? I'm that jerk that just watches Anime in English when available, but I'm open minded.

The Ghibli stuff is all done by Disney in the states. They know their voice acting. You can safely listen to the English tracks.

I totally agree with this. They did the best possible job you can do on the ones I have heard. You are definitely okay to watch the English dubs if that's what you prefer.

KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE is "girly"? It's my favorite Miyazaki film! How dare you impugn my manhood, sir!

I'd actually recommend watching them in the order of production so you can trace the development over time. I'm much more partial to the earlier films than the newer ones, but that just might be the fact that a was a die-hard anime nerd in the 90s and those were my introductions to Ghibli's output.
