Idle Thumbs has officially returned. You're welcome in advance. Bird noise.

For anybody looking to try something new the Insert Credit podcast is up to Episode 4. I have managed to squeeze it into my listening rotation and have generally been enjoying it.

I know some people can't stand Tim, but I think he's awesome.

Spoiler:

Q: Is steam a bane or a blessing?
A: Spinach, broccoli, all these things can benefit from steam.

Garnett versus Gies would be Garnett hands down for me. Gies sounds like someone who hates life, not exactly what I need in my podcast rotation.

True, I'll take Garnett's incoherent devil's advocate over Gies' overt negativity anyday. On a plus note for Weekend Confirmed, I thought the week before last was one of their best, and this week had no Garnett.

I agree with this sentiment. I feel like with Garnett I'd have a fun chat and maybe get a little irritated, while Arthur I would probably just walk away from the conversation because I can't stand his cynicism.

Yeah, you could tell Indy Jeff was uncomfortable as host but I have a feeling he would improve quickly with a couple of episodes in the chair. I wonder if he'll get the chance though?

He won't. It's Garnett's god damn show.

Yeah, Idle Thumbs is so good, really filling the void it left. I've really enjoyed the return of the regular show.

I just started listening to Idle Thumbs (thanks to goodjers). It's so, so good.

All right, I could never get past the 3rd or 4th episode of their original Idle Thumbs run, but I'll give them a shot now that I can listen as they're released. Starting with 65.

I'm new to the thread so I'm not sure if this has already been said but I enjoy a few of IGN's podcasts. The Geekbox is also good but they don't always talk about games. oh and The Comedy Button is great, but they don't ever talk about games, only reason I'm mentioning it is because its cast are all members of different gaming companies.

Zem, both have been mentioned but this forum (and this thread) is not averse to redundancy. Regardless of what others have said, I like seeing the # of people weighing in on their favorite casts.

I still listen to Rebel FM, but pretty much only because of Arthur Gies. Matt and Anthony aren't bad but Arthur is far more articulate with his opinions. Although I will admit that sometimes Arthur gets way too easily distracted by noises nobody else can even hear.

I just can't stand it when Ryan O'Donnell is on because the guy cannot come up with a reasonable argument to save his life. Not to mention his talking points almost always end up being (a) [Insert recent gaming fad] is the most brilliant thing to happen to gaming in years; (b) "No, your interpretation is wrong because I read the official novels and..."

Glad to hear everyone's opinion about Rebel FM on either side of the conversation. Personally, I think I wouldn't be able to stand Garnett's childish behavior in any setting and would much rather have a debate with Arthur Gies, who seems good at articulating his points like kuddles said. Like Aaron D said, I miss having Tyler Barber on more frequently, but I think it was addressed that he lives further out and is constantly busy since he is a freelancer or sorts of the artistic (drawing) variety, I think. What kuddles said about Ryan O'Donnell I agree with, I just miss him from all of the greatness that was The 1up Show and Co-Op. But, Matt usually fills that void for me. The whole of Rebel FM does talk more about games off the beaten path at times, but they do cover the major releases for the most parts when they do come out. Just a little worried about how Arthur is going to survive working on a side project like Rebel FM as the head reviewer over at Polygon once things kick into high gear in the fall...

I can fully understand why Arthur rubs people the wrong way. Maybe I like him because sometimes I am viewed the same way. Some people seem to always interpret me as being overly negative than I intend, and many people seem to confuse me being opinionated with being overly aggressive or close-minded. He can certainly present his opinions very strongly, but I think people are mistaken when they believe he genuinely believes his opinion is "fact." As you say, Le0hart, it's better than the likes of Garnett who seems to start arguments that aren't genuine just for the sake of making arguments.

It's also because I highly respect the work Arthur does. Naturally, there is some great writing out there like Killscreen, but in terms of mainstream sites, I feel like Arthur's reviews are by far the best writing out there. Right up there with the best the likes of Shawn Elliot and Jeff Green back in the GFW days. I mean, I remember reading stuff like this last year and knowing then that he was far too good for the likes of being an also-ran IGN reviewer.

New host on Weekend Confirmed this week, Nikole Zivalich of G4 TV.

I've got old jokes I make with my friends at are 5-10 years old and we all still love them. Not something that bothers me.

About Rebel FM.

I think Giess is alright. He sometimes sounds like he hates nearly everything. He puts too much stock in the technical aspects of game making/video quality. At the very least he tries to explain his position rather than say "because." I wish he would talk more about stuff he likes rather than having to play a game and just sh*t on it because it didn't achieve 1080p.. ect.

So, how was it with a guest host?

Wasn't a guest host, just a guest.

Episode 24 – “Tank Lady, please don’t cauterize that-…”

This is one of those episodes where giving a short synopsis won’t help you digest what you end up hearing. So here’s the obligatory topic list, and here we go: Olympics, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, X-Men Days of Future Past, Deadpool, Joss Whedon, Avengers, The Boondock Saints, The Hangover, Darksiders 2, Army of Two, CoD, Ys7, Slender Man, Super Meat Boy, The Last Guardian, Devil May Cry, Grid 2, Iron Brigade.

Regarding Rebel FM, the issue I have with Gies is his habit of, probably unintentionally, making his personal opinions sound like the universal bottom line of the argument, one that everybody should accept. This gets emphasised by Gallegos', Chandronait's and Barber's laid back dispositions and preference for carefree conversation. They hardly ever challenge him outright, and when they do, he always pulls out another one of his "Well, yes, but..." counter-arguments.

His cynicism aside, Gies may be a decent fellow for all I know. On the show, however, he would go a long, long way with a dash of humility.

In fairness, good writing and speaking involves stating your opinions as facts. It's up to the reader or listener to discern which is which, not the speaker. There's nothing that bugs me more than someone who makes a good argument, then ruins it with, "but, that's just my opinion."

I'm not asking anyone to be apologetic about their opinions. I find it as pathetic as you do. I'm just saying that certain ways of debating are more elegant and entertaining than others.

Even as someone else who likes Gies, it's hard to imagine many disagreeing that he couldn't use some humility. It makes his points more bristly than they need to and does position him as if he is speaking from a factually superior position- this being his tone and not his words. His tone betrays an arrogance not always befitting his good points.

(just a guest, not guest host as previously pointed out)

Not good. Garnett once again showed his inability to act normal and structure a decent show when women are on the podcast.

Yep. The first half hour is all I've listened to but it's been brutal. This has got to change soon or I'll be giving up.

It's still pretty good when there's not a woman on, as terribly sad as that is. I didn't even bother listening because I knew what it would be like. Lightens up the podcast backlog!

Yes, to be clear I assign the blame for my statement on Garnett, not his female guests.
