The Walking Dead (from Telltale Games) - Catch All

About Larry,

Spoiler:

I was torn until I took a close look and saw that his breathing had totally stopped-- definitely not just unconscious. That's dead enough for me. Saltlick + head = smush.

Spoiler:

I figure I would give it a good try before killing him off. I'm glad I did because it made the story more interesting to me. My relationship with Kenny became more complicated. Before he was my best bud but now he has become way too impulsive about things to actually trust him. I'm actually slowly siding with Lilly.

Spoiler:

Y'all shouldn't rely on zombies to do your dirty work. They're very unreliable. Make sure you kill the 2nd brother yourself. It's the only way to be sure. And I don't remember, but I don't think you saw them advancing until after he's dead anyway, right?

Spoiler:

I left the, both alive, and the zombies were moving in on both (including their mom). No way they could escape given the numbers and how close they were.

Wow. Episode 1 done.

I have to thank Hoppa again for the awesome gift during the Steam sale.

That's some serious gaming.

Thought my wife was going to play along with, and she enjoyed the storytelling. But a couple of times when I had to beat zombies to death, she got too upset about the gore and abandoned the idea.

Not sure what to say. Guess I'll read through some spoilers, and I hope that things are marked episode 1 or 2.

As for who I saved in the two big ep1 choices.

Spoiler:

Duck. My wife was still playing then. And her rule was "always save the children". Afterward, I wondered if I could have saved Shawn and let Kenny get Duck... but I'm guessing that wasn't possible.

I saved Carley because she was awesome with the gun. I hoped that she could shoot Doug free, but I suspected it wouldn't happen. Still, she is a crack shot it seems. Although she did tell me how Doug saved her from the news van... so maybe he's more useful than he looks.

As for the siding with Larry/Kenny, and what happened leaving the store...

Spoiler:

f*ck Larry. I cannot believe he punched me and left me for dead after I had to hack off my own brother's head to get the damn keys for his medicine. I am ready to let him die at the first opportunity.

And speaking of having to kill people...

Spoiler:

Irene at the hotel was rough. But she wanted to die, and she didn't want to be a monster, and I let her. I felt bad about it, but I felt happy for her recognizing the truth of the situation.

As for my brother... dammit. That was brutal. I actually shed some real manly tears as they made me keep hacking and hacking. Damn.

Bravo, Telltale. Bravo.

One thing I strongly disliked: No option to invert the Y axis (on 360, at least, that I could find). Boo.

Annoyed me too, on PC. Granted there's only a few scenes where you seem to be in first-person (or 3rd, over the shoulder?) but it was still annoying trying to look around and going the wrong way.

Hm looks like the break between episode 1/2 talk is around the end of June on Page 4, if anyone else is just playing this now, and wants to catch up on the thread.

I did have some of the graphics hitching that people are talking about. It was only in the very opening of the game after the

Spoiler:

car accident

when there was a cutscene of Lee walking before it gave me control again. Just weird slowdown and freeze for a few seconds. Then the rest of the game was pretty solid. I never did turn it down off of high graphics.

Hah. And a few hours later and I'm done with Episode 2. Damn good Saturday.

So wow, my choices were way more in the majority/minority this time around. I wonder if the first episode evened out because of people playing both ways, or if the choices were just more even.

84 and 87 % for the first couple, 31% for the next one, and 82% for the 4th choice. Jeez.

So... apparently I was in the minority

Spoiler:

killing Larry. But I said I'd let that old bastard die just a couple of hours ago. I keep my word dammit.

As for the St John Brothers

Spoiler:

I killed the creepy one (Danny?) who talks to his gun, Charlotte, and gunned down Jolene. I think he's a few cards short of a full deck and I didn't want him after me. I guess I could have just left him in the bear trap, but...

I was a little upset that Clementine saw that. And I guess that gave me the strength to walk away from Andy. Besides the zombies were coming in anyway. He was already gone, no need for me to finish him.

When's Episode 3? And I swear this is why I didn't buy it for myself, I didn't want to be waiting for months. But it's really been a fun few hours. Definitely worth playing.

Stele wrote:

August, but no specific date.

Episode 1 done for me as well. I barely use my PS3 these days, but I went that route because of the bundle pricing.

If it makes you feel any better...

Spoiler:

...I read the game FAQ, and even if you choose to save Shawn, he still dies (Kenny saves Duck). A whopping 76% of players supposedly save Carley, as did I. I wonder if it was the gun thing, or the "hot chick" thing. I wonder how that percentage breaks down on a male vs. female gamer basis.

No sh*t, right!?

I did the same thing. I was somewhat surprised that nearly half DIDN'T.

Spoiler:

In mine, he was yelling at me not to turn my back on him, and to come back and fight him, while he was on his knees in the rain, with two bullets in his skull that didn't kill him somehow, and his momma and about 40 other zombies closing in on him while my group hauled ass out of there.

Spoiler:

I tried to save Shawn, since Kenny was right there to save his own kid. Had to try to move the tractor off Shawn after Kenny saved Duck, and Kenny got scared and ran off, getting Shawn eaten anyway. I don't think they'll let the kids die in this like they do in the show.

As far as getting punched in the pharmacy, Larry was the one who punched me and left me for dead, because for the most part, I sided with Kenny in Episode 1. I didn't feel quite as bad when he got salt-licked, but perhaps Kenny could've waited until I wasn't doing CPR on the man.

After reading some of this thread, I think people were confused by the choice a bit.

Spoiler:

Give her your gun makes it sound like you're going to be without your only firearm. Pretty big mistake. If it had been worded simply as "let her borrow" or "let her use" the gun then I imagine we'd have something closer to the 80% we see for some other choices.

I can't imagine even casual zombie genre fans not going along with a smart character who realizes they are done for and wants to end it. Such a nice contrast to all the morons in most zombie movies who think they will be somehow the one lucky immune person and hide their bite and then screw the group over. ;)

In my case, I simply didn't want to

Spoiler:

hand my gun over to a clearly unstable individual who could conceivably turn it against me, nor did I particularly want ANYONE firing a gun at that point if I could help it, considering that by that point it had been clearly established that zombies are drawn to loud noises. If there had been a "offer to give her the mercy stroke with your ax" option, I would've taken that, but there wasn't. It was one of the few points in the game so far where I feel the moral choice the writers were trying to give you was overshadowed by practical considerations they clearly didn't consider.

I think I hesitated for the same reason, but then I had an option to say

Spoiler:

Carly, you shoot her. She freaked and then I went with the give her the gun since that seemed to be the only way it was going to work.

I just played through Episode 2 in one sitting (amazing!), and now I'm off to watch Breaking Bad.

Gonna have some interesting dreams tonight, that's for sure.

Top that off with a reading on 1984 for a depression hat-trick!

Me too. Damn.

This is definitely a game where there's no "right" choice to make... you're screwed no matter what!

Spoiler:

It's interesting how throwing an impressionable kid into the mix really messes with your heads... I imagine many people, like myself, have abandoned our normal gamer instincts in an attempt to not warp Clementine's brain. I killed Danny, and felt horrible for doing so after getting busted. I also "salt-licked" Larry, which seems like a bad idea (guess I'll go read the FAQ and see what the alternative was...).

In the end, I left Andy alive... as did most people. Guess we ALL felt a bit guilty. I also refused to "steal" from the car, which was pretty ridiculous survival-wise. All for that darn adorable little kid. Alas.

How long you think that little kid is going to last in this brave new world if you don't teach her to do what you have to to survive? Just sayin'.

I have had no moral qualms with anything I've done so far, and that includes a lot of murder. I'm pretty sure every time I am presented with the opportunity to murder someone, I've always done it. I'm playing as a bad guy if I compare myself with a lot of the people posting here, but in my mind, I would do anything to protect Clementine.

Spoiler:

Although I killed Larry out of self-preservation. I didn't forget you laying me out when zombies were swarming the pharmacy, asshole.

hbi2k wrote:

Yeah, well...

Spoiler:

Duck already seems to be going mental, and he hasn't seen half the sh*t Clem has so far. I know what you're saying, but... I just can't do it. I suppose I have three more episodes to teach her the sad, hard "kill or be killed" lessons if I need to.

Oh! And by the way!

Spoiler:

f*ck you, Lily! Andy had my head almost pressed up against the electric fence, and she refused to take the shot. OK, fine, I helped crush your (possibly still living) father's skull, but WTF?!

NOTE: If you manage to get to four compressions, Larry's mouth moves - just before Kenny smashes his skull!

Yeesh. That makes it just so much worse. Even if he WAS a massive ass.

Or that Kenny just saved you from becoming Brain Wellington.

Spoiler:

No way? Here's one way: plot convenience. And in this case, your choice to let them live may LITERALLY come back to bite you in the ass. Or arm. Or throat.

Just finished episode 2 over the weekend. Man, Brad on Giantbomb was not kidding when he said this one was much darker than the first one. I'm loving this series, this is my GOTY so far.

I love how the characters aren't one-dimensional, static stereotypes. They are continually shifting and changing based on events. They are just as unpredictable and freaked out as you'd expect people to be in this situation. That, along with the response timer, ups the tension because I'm never sure how any particular character is going to respond to my choice or response.

Spoiler:

I tried to revive Larry, mainly because I wanted to get back on Lily's good side. Larry was all full of bluster, but Lily's behavior was really freaking me out. But once I did that -- and Larry got an ice lick to the skull -- Lily and I seem to be on the same page. Instead, it's Kenny that's gone off the freaking rails.

The game really captures the feel of the comic. During parts of the comic, you think that a certain character is going to lose it, but then something happens to make them get back on track, and send another character off the rails. The game really is brilliant.

Also, regarding Clem, with some spoilers for the comic:

Spoiler:

Hopefully they are more gentile with Clem than they have been with Carl during the comic. I'd like to think she's the grounding for the way things used to be, but Carl certainly isn't that in the comic.

I don't think I want to read the comics.

Haha. Of course we would agree with vengeance, you Boron-hater you.

I read all 100 issues over three days. If you're liking the game, you definitely should give it a shot.
