Fighting Game Catch-All

2 weeks until Persona 4 Arena. Excitement building...

I may have to pick up Rachel again, she strikes me as being the closest to Elizabeth that there is in BlazBlue. Elizabeth actually looks like a hybrid of Rachel and Arakune, she can inflict Fear on her opponent and has traps that can be laid down, but her actual simple combos look very similar to Rachel in that they utility her Persona to keep them going (Rachel makes heavy use of her Drive mid-combo to keep her and the opponent in proper range).

More BlazBlue this week. Same bad time, same bad place.

How did I miss this thread? I'm always down for some BB, but i didnt buy BBCSEX just BBCT and BBCS.. I'm also super hype for P4U, GG and Jojos coming out soon.
A little tip for P4U though.. it doesnt play like GG or BB at all.. it's like KOF, marvel, Jojos and GG had a baby.. then hit it on the head a little. Fun game, but a little tricky to play well. I predict lots of dial -a-combos until people learn the persona break and atribute system.

Good for you. Rachel is the strangest zoning character I've ever seen in my limited experience, but I'm hoping to pick her up at some point. She's a really interesting one. I guess she was much more powerful in CT, and got nerfed later.

I played her in CT, she was one of the top characters in that game. Then yes, she did get hit by the nerf bat, and never recovered.

Where did you get to play P4A?

At Evo I got to play a lot of casuals with atlus employees and other attendees. It's a really fun game and Dustloop a primer for it here. I plan on running ranbats for P4U starting next weekend locally. (Getting early copies of the game)

Hopefully this can revive the days we had when SF4 was brand new. So far nothing has come close to those over-full lobbies, running 2-3 hours almost every night.

Doubtful.. it's hella anime. If you really want to get good at a game.. study the engine properties, practice execution and dont rely on online to make you better. Take a setup somewhere and start playing actual people. You'll build your scene and enjoy the games more!

Wait, you're in SF,CA? Dude.. you have a GREAT 2d fighter scene there. Southtown and Gamecenter (in san mateo) will definitely be running ranbats for this game when it comes out.
Go out there man!

I'm not talking about getting good at a game, I'm just talking about getting the few folks here who enjoys fighters back into a fun setting. Hence why I started these weekly fight nights. You're not talking to folks who go to EVO here (mostly).

Either way.. it'll be fun to play against someone. I'm super excited about this game..and then Tekken in September.. and (to a lesser extent) DOA 5. I'm just happy to see people playing fighters again. Have you tried getting some KOF lobbies together?

Nah, I think you're the first person to post who even has KOF. The first page or two of posts covers what games we all have, it's pretty much everything Capcom with a handful of BB players and then a couple Namco players. Oh and Mortal Kombat, that proved popular when we last did it, and it's always fun to watch.

MK9 makes me frown, but I do try all fighters that come to the market. Lately i've been craving 2d fighters big time and playing BBCS to prep for P4U but i'd love to play with you guys sometime.

I have KOF (aka the best game that nobody plays, myself included), I guess I forgot to mention that when I found this thread

That's one thing I regret not doing at EVO
It was always so crowded but as you put it, it was "hella anime", now I hear that it's an amazing game so I think I made a mistake by not playing it.

My bad, so that makes 2 folks who have it. The sum total of my experience with KoF comes from CvS 2 which I played quite a bit on Dreamcast. I really liked the N groove in that game, and a couple of the KoF characters were interesting (Kim, Athena), but I know absolutely nobody who plays the KoF games so didn't have any reason to get into them. I was tempted by... I think it was KoF 11, because it actually had online play, but I heard it was buggy and laggy. I have nothing against the series itself, but like you said, nobody plays it.

More BB Extend tonight, I'll try to make it on early for the EST folks. Hope to see lots of people there.

I've got KoF too. I found the thread after the games had already been set, so I figured that either nobody else had it or it was ignored due to bad netcode. (I haven't actually played online, just know that it's got a reputation)

I'll be online for BB around 7 PDT.

Good games tonight guys. I've gotta learn to be a bit more defensive when facing Hakumen, my life bar was disappearing far faster than I realized tonight.

One of the Dustloop bigwigs got a chance to play P4A at the Atlus offices recently, and just did a write up of all the system details he was able to test. Some good info here for BB veterans, and gives an idea of how the game is more new player friendly than BB, but also how a lot of BB knowledge will carry over.

EDIT: Also, challenge mode videos for most of the cast. Aigis' final challenge looks like a beast, use every ability in a single combo.

I find some of the mechanics in this engine really interesting like the 5f vulnerable window after jumping. Also nice quality of life changes like auto air tech by holding a button and and auto quick get-up when knocked down. I raised my eyebrows a bit though when I read "no negative edge specials" though.

Also can anyone tell me what a "TRM" or "Throw Reject Miss" is?

Throw Reject Miss (Dustloop Wiki) is when you enter a throw break at the wrong time, and the result is the throw becomes guaranteed (you don't get to try another break).

The negative edge change makes a lot of sense, BlazBlue doesn't have universal negative edge like Street Fighter does. IIRC, only Carl and Arakune can do negative edge in BB.

dustloop wrote:

Throw Reject Miss occurs if you're thrown between 4-30 frames AFTER inputting your throw break attempt. However, if you "whiff" your throw break and the regular throw animation/motion comes out, then only frames 17-30 (after the throw break input) will be the "Throw Reject Miss".

Okay, so I'm having some trouble understanding. The wording on this page seems to treat throw break attempts as distinct from throw attempts. But if the input for both is B+C then how does the game interpret one or the other?

I'm sorry if I don't seem to make much sense, I only really have SF to go off of. Is it anything like being thrown out of a throw attempt i.e. being thrown during your throw's startup, or whiffing your throw while in their throw range?

EDIT: Further research reveals this

Airk from dustloop forums wrote:

If YOU are in blockstun, and you push throw, nothing will happen (You're in blockstun, you can't do anything). But if your opponent then grabs you shortly thereafter, you'll get a Throw Reject Miss, because even though you were in blockstun and couldn't initiate a throw, you still hit throw and are therefore in the TRM window. When you get thrown, it might be purple if you're still in blockstun when your opponent grabs you, but it won't matter because you get the TRM.

It's an interesting concept, for sure.

It's a mechanic specifically intended to prevent mashing throw break. You're given a pretty large window in BB to input a throw break, and Throw Reject Miss punishes you for mashing out a throw break instead of being deliberate and "more skilled" about your throw break attempts. The tactic they mention, baiting out throw attempts to invoke a TRM, is definitely a pretty advanced thing.

The removal of TRM from P4A is a perfect example of them trying to make the game more appealing to a wider audience. TRM may be fantastic if you're a really hardcore BB player, but most casual players will be frustrated by having the game punish them for trying to escape throws.

EDIT: Uhh... this is worrisome...

I hope they fix it before release. I really, really hope they fix it before release.

Can't read link at work due to firewall. How bad of a lag are we talking on 360? Here's hoping for a day 0 patch.

The article doesn't detail exactly how bad it is, but a comparison to King of Fighters XIII is made so I assume it's as bad. I find this shocking considering how fantastic all versions of BB have been with online out of the box, not sure what could have gone wrong this time.

Hmm, I suppose it's not outside the realm of possibility. I mean, SF4 is playable online, and Capcom released MvC3 whose netcode initially was godawful, same with SFxT when it first came out. All because they built each netcode from the ground up.

Of course, this is the part where you tell me it was the same development team that worked on BB and P4A and my analogy falls apart

Even if it was the same team, they probably still rebuilt it from the ground up. From speaking with folks I know who work on making videogames, this is standard practice in the industry, and it blows my mind. You've already got a working system, why rebuild it? Why even touch it? Every sensibility I have as a programmer is offended by this.

I'll hold out hope for a day 0 patch to fix the issue, at least the game came out in Japan first so they now have some pressure to address it before the rest of the world gets the game. If this turns out to be unplayable at launch I'll have to push the schedule forward, which will be disappointing but at least it's Mortal Kombat next, so we can take out our frustrations with fatalities and x-ray moves.

I'll be on today if anyone wants to play some BB.

This guy has been streaming P4 online play. http://www.twitch.tv/thebrett

Yeah, I've been watching him for a few matches. Looks awesome, and there's no lag but he's playing on PS3. I had no interest in Yu, but I might have to look into him now that I've watched a few rounds, he looks to have some good footsies.

He just played (and lost to) an Akihiko who was really good, I'm definitely going to try Akihiko when I get my hands on the game.

EDIT: Wow, Chie is really fast.

Chie is BS.
