Star Trek Online Catch-All

So, I've played a few hours and gathered a few of these Ferengi lockboxes. It seems these will be going away soon. So, I need to spend real money to get these master keys? Is the loot inside worth the effort?

Don't htink you need to open them ASAP (though I could be wrong about that). The loot is a lottery, so you could get something cool (such as a Ferengi ship you can't get by any other means), or much more likely some moderately useful consumables. I have a lifetime sub, so get free store-currency (I think they recently changed it to Zen or something like that; before it was Cryptic Points), so don't mind spending it on the Master Keys needed to open the boxes, even though I've never gotten anything worthwhile from them. So I suppose it depends on how much it'll cost you to get the Master Keys from the store.

"One blogger investigated how many of Star Trek Online's red gift boxes would be opened to statistically ensure that a Jem'Hadar ship would be looted. It came out to 153 tries (and $153 spent). No wonder the studios don't want to tell you the odds."

from a Massively article.

Is the loot in them worth the cost to open them? Definitely not, unless you get really lucky. delete them if they aren't the special boxes. I did keep one in the bank. It was a gold box, picked up during the Jem'Hadar box days. It sat in the bank for months while I didn't play. Just spent some time this week playing, helped form a fleet and was payed in a Master Key for my time. So I opened the box finally.

It had a tribble in it.

Yeah, I really wanted that Jem Hadar ship. Would happily have paid $10-15 on the store to get it. But it's not worth the hundreds of dollars it would cost with the boxes. They're gambling. And the worst kind - one that takes advantage of gamers.

This is hott news.

The first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation launched 25 years ago. In honor of the anniversary of the blessed event, Star Trek Online players have the opportunity to unlock some nostalgic swag for free. From now until "around" 1:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the 24th, players can take a mini-mission that will send them off to speak with good ol' Worf. Completing that mission will unlock the free swag: Federation characters will receive a TNG Season 1 uniform, male Klingon and Federation characters with hair options will receive Worf's Season 1 short hair and goatee (sorry, no bearded ladies), and Klingon and Federation characters of both species will get access to Worf's Season 1 sash.

This is a per-character unlock, so be sure to talk to Worf with every character that you'd like to boldly go with a little more panache.

Alright, I bit the bullet and started this game up again. I haven't played it since Beta, so I was expecting some changes. But these changes were more than I could have hoped for. The game's new Shooter configuration makes ground combat a million times less boring. I don't know that I'd call it revolutionary or even put it high on the fun scale, but it's a lot better than it used to be in beta. The space combat is still fantastic, and I'm glad to see that they haven't tinkered with it too much. If anything, it looks like they streamlined a few things to make more sense (I still have no idea what most of the Science consoles do). The Duty Officer system is confusing as hell, but it seems to make sense. Who wouldn't want a Whoopi Goldberg envoy on their ship? Speaking of which, they've taken the number of ships to a staggering realm.

Long story short, if I could get invited into a Fleet, that'd be great. I can't promise that I can play more than sporadically, but if I do play I'd rather be playing to support the Fleet.

I'm @namikaze, btw.

I am seriously considering reinstalling so I can get those TNG Season 1 uniforms.

Eh, there's a screenshot at this news story about it.

When they said season 1, I was thinking of Troi's skirt. But alas, that is not to be. They don't look much different than the TNG uniforms I already have.

You can also get with enegry credits off the exchange. Remember almost all items from lockboxes are not bound. So you can buy say $15 worth of ship modules or something similar, sell them for enegry credits and buy the jem ship. Now mileage my vary and you may have to also work on getting some enegry credits on the side. Last I checked the Jem ship was at about $150 million EC.

Ships EC going rate low/high as of 7/22/2012
Mirror Star Cruiser = 990K/35M
MIrror Assault Cruiser = 1M/35M
Jem'Hadar Attack Ship = 350M/500M
Ferengi D'Kora = 71M/500M
Cardassian Galor Ship = 110M/500M
Tholian Orb Weaver = 88M/500M
Tholian Recluse Carrier = 96M/500M

Tuffli Class Freighter = 55M/500M

Price of the Jem ship has jumped due to it being not available - sorry

Also if anyone is back playing and would like an invite too SEF just let me know.

I can do what now? What mods/consoles could I buy and sell for enough EC to get a Jem ship? And buy them with what?

Sorry, I was not very clear. Basically you can sell anything for EC that is not bound. Anything that comes form a lockbox is generally not bound and can be sold. That is why the special ships are on the exchange. Now there expensive so I would look at ways to make cash. Right now a doffs colonists and refugees sell well as do communites because of SB building. However the quickest cash can come from buying say $20 worth of zen, then buying master keys of fleet ship modules. Now depending on the ship listed above you could get enough from fleet ship modules (8-9 million a piece) to buy most of the special ships. However the jem ship is very prized and you would have to buy $100+ worth of the zen to sell enough of the modules to reach 350 million EC. The problem is most of the prices are set based on the majority of the player base are loaded (max ec - on more than one toon). So for people that are casual, or come and go it pretty pricey. However this is another way of getting the ship you want. If can be done with out spending any real cash - but you would have to play the exchange day and night. I have been playing the exchange over the last week since S6 and I am up too 17 million.

Yeah, that makes sense. I guess I just hadn't though of buying things for Zen and selling them for EC in order to buy the ships.

Sad I hadn't thought of that back when the Jem'Hadar ship was at a reasonable price. Now it's pretty much impossible for me to get (at least given how frequently I play).

Also, armedbushido, I saw you in game and tried to message you/get your attention, but I think you must've logged out. Would love an invite to SEF when you're back on. Playing with people again is one fo the things I hope will help me get back into the swing of STO.

My main is [email protected]

Edit: Also, I don't get what a Fleet Ship Module is for. Can you explain?

Are there any Fleet Admirals left in the fleet? It seems I'm only an Admiral in Captains with Jobs, which means I can't deposit or withdraw EC. Not the end fo the world, but was going to take a loan out from the GWJ bank to play the exchange.

Sorry, I was probably away or just not paying attention, I will keep and eye out for you.

Fleet ship modules is what you need to buy fleet ships. Each fleet ship cost about 20000 Fleet Credits and 1-4 Fleet Modules.

I had a similar issue. I was trying to mess with the Starbase construction system and couldn't interface with it. I can't remember who was "Fleet Admiral," but as an Admiral, I can't do anything, either!

I will get this fixed - I think I still have one toon in fleet. I thought there where more fleet admirals than that . Before I left I counted ten at least.

Sadly it seems like only 4 or 5 left, but I'm not sure how many still play.

I have one character left in the GWJ fleet, so would be happy to be made Fleet Admiral to do GWJ-fleet related activities. My other character is now in SEF (thanks armedbushido!)

Maybe I am? I haven't logged in in a while though.

EDIT: Nope, just regular admiral. Logged in tonight to check. Looks like there are 4 fleet admirals, but a few haven't been on for months. I could take the promotion if someone can give it. I'm not on a lot lately, but I am online on Steam pretty much 24/7 and could always hop on if any fleet business needs handling.

So Konstantin@Occulte in the fleet was on today when I logged on with my alt and was kind enough to promote me to Fleet Admiral. So if anyone needs that bump, let me know - I'm either on that character ([email protected]) or my main ([email protected]).

Cool, I talked with him earlier and I was going to get my alt back in there. Glad he caught one of you on.

If you could push my main, Jolan@ilduce620 up, that would be nice. Thanks!

I could be missing an option somewhere, but I think we both need to be online to make this happen. Let me know when you're on - if I'm there (and I have been with much greater frequency lately), I'm likely on [email protected]

Cool. I sent you a Friend Request. As that character isn't in the GWJ Fleet, apparently, I can't see when you're on.

Thanks!

Assuming you are Jolan@ilduce620 in the fleet, I was actually able to promote you offline. Didn't relize that was an option before. You should now be able to do anything you need to. My alt in the GWJ fleet is [email protected], in case you're looking for me.

Yeah, I saw that. You weren't on at the time, though.

And yeah, Jolan is my Main. Thanks!

I poked around briefly in the Starbase options. Looked like someone had done something with it, but it didn't look like I could contribute anything. I need to read up on what, exactly, I need to do to get stuff moving on that front...

Just FYI - I joined the SEF fleet the other day. Today, I asked a question that I thought was simple enough - "Where do I get one of those Ferengi cruisers?" And wow I did not expect that simple question to set off a hugely angry response from Sypok, one of the Senior Officers. He actually started to call me a troll, simply because I couldn't find the answer for myself on the wiki. I checked the wiki, repeatedly, and they only said that the item comes from a lockbox. The wiki did NOT say that the lockboxes aren't available anymore. So his reaction to my question was completely and totally out of line, in my opinion.

I don't know if that's the mentality for the whole leadership of SEF, but considering this is the #3 guy in the organization, I have my doubts that this is going to be a one-off situation. So as of right now, I don't recommend that people join the fleet.

Come back and build a gwj base!

Stele wrote:

Speaking of which, I contributed some stuff last week, to get the ball rolling. However, I forgot to check into opening up contributions to the rest of the fleet. I was only able to do this once I was made a Fleet Admiral, but surely there's a checkbox somewhere to allow people other than Fleet Admirals to make contributions.

The system, overall, seems to be straightforward. You just "donate" whatever resources you have to the overall effort, and you can choose how much to allocate. It remains to be seen whether having a Starbase is "worth it," but from my perspective, most of those resources aren't anything I was really using, so why not!

Has anyone else been able to make contributions?

Sorry to hear about that experience. Not cool treatment in any game, let alone this one.

Yet another reason why the GWJ community is superior to all others.
