Let's talk manga! ^_^

I don't know if you guys are familiar with Ah My Goddess but the series is about 20 years old at this point. In the last monthly update the author dropped a bombshell of revelations that flip the ENTIRE story on its head. Its quite the mindf*ck experience to re-read the series because you notice all of the little hints and things that didn't make context at the time.

I really don't want to spoil it and don't go looking it up. But if you haven't been reading that series I would heartily recommend starting now.

I know. It was one of the things that really bothered me the more I read it. I understand about the writing style and all, but at times while reading it you say to yourself "Come on!" Its very interesting that the author took this turn. I wonder how it'll pan out.

Can you link to the article i want to read what he said.

There probably isn't an article. The revelation I mentioned is simply the most recent fan-translated chapter.

Improbably, I'm able to contribute to this thread: I just read Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths by Shigeru Mizuki. I've never read anything else by him before, but this book is apparently a departure from his usual fare, as he semi-fictionalizes his experience in the Second World War, fighting in New Guinea. It's a pretty affecting book, mixing cartoony characters with realistic, detailed backgrounds, an episodic structure, and a damning view of the Japanese military leaders at all levels.

I could probably post about it in the book recommendations thread, but I won't cross the streams.

And if it counts as manga (I suppose it does), I can only say that Yuichi Yokoyama's work is always incredible (except Garden, which has too much talking!).

I finished Volume 7 of Bakuman tonight and still love the series. I'm gonna have to buy a few more this weekend because the ending of Volume 7 set up so many story arcs and questions to be answered.

I'm gonna go ahead and say: Damn it, guys, you're making me spend too much money. Looks like they're up to at least Volume 14 in English, so that's $70 more I'm gonna have to drop.

hee hee your welcome i feel no guilt because that series is awesome... but i really wonder how much of the industry is still run that way, at the least i would imagine that there are now way more artists using digital tablets and the like drawing directly onto computers... but then again there are many manga that are still black and white... hmmm...

I just borrowed a giant Azumanga Daioh omnibus from my friend. It's really awesome. I watched the anime, but I'm glad to finally be reading the manga.

No link, since I'm on phone, but there's a new kickstarter to publish a color translation of Unico

Edit:
Linky

Finished Bakuman Vol. 11. Loved everything about the series so far except for the fact that Vol 12 isn't available yet. Need moar.

Whelp, a new chapter of Ah My Goddess was just released. Thing is it wasn't translated by the same group as the others. Its full of bad english. REALLY bad english.

Were talking one step above "all your base" engrish. I wonder why.

Gesh, even magazines are doing the countdown clock now!

I'm curious... very curious...

Battle Royale - high schoolers put on an island and tasked with killing each other until a final victor emerges. Fun, violent romp with some memorable character back-stories.

Sanctuary - really neat story about two childhood friends amassing power - one in the Yakuza, the other as an up and coming politician in Japan.

I also adore Junji Ito, who does horror manga. There are stories of his available here along with some other authors. The Enigma of Amigara Fault got me looking at manga again (I typically keep to comics). He also did Uzumaki, Tomie and Gyo; he's just a master of his craft.

I recently picked up the Banana Fish series, which I hear is good, Higurashi, which is one mindtrip after another, and Swallowing the Earth by Tezuka. Looks like I'll be adding Bakumen as well and maybe Ah My Goddess.

Has anyone heard anything about 20th Century Boys?

20th Century Boys starts off good but goes on too long and eventually meanders into nonsense. I'd recommend reading Monster or Pluto first.

I forgot to mention I received and read Bakuman Vol. 12 the day the English version came out. It was awesome.

Also, this is kinda cool.

It's been a while since I've posted anything....this looks like a nice place to start

I'm such a girl when it comes to manga. All my mangas are all shoujo with the exception of Prince of Tennis.

I'm working on getting the re-issued Japanese versions of Sailor Moon (and then finding out that they are releasing those versions here in the States---easier to buy; but it'll mess up my collection); and I'm finishing up Ouran High School Host Club (one more volume to go).

Skip Beat, Stepping on Roses, and A Devil and Her Love Song are the ones I'm currently reading. I wish Shojo Beat was still in circulation.

So, they're re-starting Initial D?

Nope, it's something to do with Dragonball Z. I can't read enough of the page to make heads or tails of it, though.

New Dragon Ball Z movie. Not as exciting as I hoped.

Michikodesu:

I love me some shojo manga, to be sure. I just get hung on the drawing skill sometimes, I'm not as into the fashion-designer aesthetic shojo mangaka are prone to using, so bad illustrations can make me walk faster than they do with shonen. On the plus side, stupid battle-duel arcs are less common in shojo manga.

The recent one I read and liked was Faster than a Kiss. I also just bought a volume of Absolute Boyfriend. I liked the series and wanted a hard copy at home.

The only manga I'm still reading is Fairytail, excellent stuff. Probably going to try to get back into the King of Hell series (even though it finished a while back) and check out Black Lagoon (which for some reason I have volumes 5, 6, 7, & 9 IMAGE(http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/files/smileys/icon_question.gif)).

You all should read The Breaker.

Spoiler:

I thought you wanted to talk about Mangal .

The Breaker and The Breaker: New Waves... all are awesome, man i'm reading so many manga now i don't even know if i could list them all, sadly it happens that when i see an update on mangahere.com then i just read it. It's also how i find the weirdest stuff like Silver Spoon, a manga about a kid who just wanted to get away from his suburban life as a middle schooler and so goes to an agricultural highschool where he is surrounded by farmers and their way of life.

From the maker of Fullmetal Alchemist, too. Maybe she just wanted something light and fun after that last romp.

I've been reading Arachnid and its pretty good.

See told you!!! Do you people listen to me NOOOO!!!! Cayne can't be right about Manga that would make him to awesome, ergo he must be wrong

Where do people go to find fan-translated manga online? I found a bunch of places when I looked for Hourou Musuko, but some of them feel kind of skanky and like I might catch a bad case of malware visiting the site. So... what places should I prefer to look?

www.mangahere.com is my go to site used to be mangafox.com but they got hammered recently and lost a bunch of manga's to the ethernet. Oh and www.Batoto.net is a third popular one.
