Star Trek Online Catch-All

I think a lot of people just really want to be the head of there own fleet. Plus being free to play there is always new people coming in.

This is true and in the past it worked just fine. I ran in GWJ for weeks at a time and did not see anyone. However with testing of Season Six I have done with Starfleet Elite Force I just do not see a fleet of under ten doing much - and that might be on the light side. It takes a lot of different resources just to get to Tier 1. Not saying it could not be done, hell even a solo person could do - just take a long long long time...

Anyway I hop all is well and if anyone is looking to maybe join up with a larger fleet send me a tell. If you need help at all just send a tell.

Regards,

Does that mean you're going to stick with SEF instead of the GWJ fleet?

Unfortnately yes - I loved being the GWJ Fleet, but after two years it was getting a little lonely in space... Sorry guys I wanted to try an build the GWJ Starbase but after seeing what it was going to take I just did not see away to get it done. SEF might even struggle in the later tiers depending how many are active by that time (6-7 months) from now.

I don't hold it against you at all. I continuously struggle to play the game. Which makes me sad. I like it in theory, but kept feeling...bored while playing.

If I jump back in, I may join you so as to be a part of the starbase building fun. How many people are in SEF? How many active on any given day?

Having decided this weekend to install and download this to check it out, it seems a lot of the "new player" info I'm running into is outdated. So, a few questions -

1) Any particular tips on how to easily accumulate and not waste cash at lower levels?

2) Huge play/advancement/whatever mistakes I should avoid?

3) Is space combat really just "circle around slowly and try to keep hitting the same side of the ship over and over" for awhile? I picked up some mines to drop behind me and bait enemies through them, but other than that, it's pretty much been "circle, spam phaser/disruptors, wait for mine cooldown" with the occasional "oh my facing is right at your open shield, tactical officer boost and torpedoes in your FACE".

4) Ground combat is really frantic. The companions remind me of Dragon Age companions in that they are spaztic and mildly useless. Tips?

5) Insert space for people to share deep, space-worn wisdom here.

Space combat depends on your ship. In my Tactical ships it's more about making attack runs, firing off powers and max DPS and then speed away and come around for another pass.

But yes in the Engineering tanks it's very slow.

Its like any other leveling MMO. Early on, you don't have many options, so combat gets a tad repetitive. After a while, you get enough different options that you will run out of hotkey slots for them. And still end up using them all.

It gets better. And if the Engineering cruiser seems a tad boring, get a Tactical corvette and load in some better engines. It stops being a FPS circlestrafe and gets into some interesting flying. More so for the Klingons, a Bird of Prey gets down and boogies.

I think this is my biggest gripe with STO. Early levels, combat is too slow and boring. By the time you're near max level, I'm pressing so many different buttons, hitting all my powers so frequently, that it's just pure chaos. I can no longer enjoy the beauty of the space combat thanks to the need to use every single power I have. Wish that could be simplified somehow.

SEF like GWJ on the books is pushing 400. However, after two years the number of active players is around 10 at any given time and pushes 20 on weekends. It has been more active since Season Six is around the corner. Also this group is avid Star Trek fans and are not playing STO because it is the next thing. They play because they love Star Trek. Most have never played an MMO and would never if it was not Star Trek.

So if you think might return - hit me up and I will get you an invite.

1.) Yes, do not buy anything - you will get nice rewards and drops. Also do the feature episodes as soon as your of level. A lot of the items once you get the rank with you so only have to do them once. However so do not and want that item later at a higher rank you will have to replay.

2.) Well the biggest I can think of is when you first create your character and pick racial traits. If you go with a premade race you can pick two, alien all four. Either way the ones you can pick need to be ground based. In the past you wanted space focused traits, but now ground. The bonus from space traits can be made up easy with consoles. The ground traits are just too good now and really boost you later in STF play. Still if you did not do this do not worry - you will get by trust me. I am just pointing out the mini/max theory craft. It is on the books to allow us to revamp our traits at sometime... The level fast make sure you are max aout doff missions the moment you can start them. The give good skill points and you rocket up. This game is by far the easiest to level in. I have taken a new character currently from level 6 to 36 in less than three weeks, and that is only with doffs. I only played missions to get the character to unlock doffs missions. Since then I have not played one mission. So if your a person doing misison and doffs you rocket up the levels...

3.) Well mostly if you play a Engneer and flying cruiser it all about holding agro and tanking. Now with the new skill system you do not have to be Eng/Crusier Tac/Escort Sci/Sci. Now you can being any class and fly what you want. If you search the forums there is a lot fo good builds for all.

4.) Since the ground combat revamp ground is be far the best IMO. Play in shooter mode with my TAC, but swithc between shototer and rpg with my science toon. Yes, your BOFFS get kind of runner around and do not do what you want. Remember you can take control and position them if you think a certain fight needs it. I recommend just keeping there gear update just like yours and should not have to much trouble.

5.) The one thing I can say is STO is a lot deeper than people give credit. There a lot of hidden thing going that do not show up on the surface. The Doff system is incredible a ton of great chain mission to get item and better Doff's. Talk to npc you see - make sure to go on your ship and talk to the crew! I learn something new everyday, especially since I joined SEF. Example is I just learned you can launch a shuttle from your ship now. Here is a few helpful links.

Thanks for the tips, guys.

I got to level 10 last night and unlocked a ship, I went with an escort just to have something that moves a little faster with some better weapons. I should have checked this thread again before I did so, but I don't really regret it. I think when I hit the next rank I'll get one of the visually imposing cruisers.

I haven't had a lot of time to look into the duty officer missions yet, but they seemed pretty interesting when the game sent me to Starfleet to learn about them. Crafting looks... I dunno. Uninteresting, but maybe I just don't understand it. There seems to be a good amount of items that level with you, and easily obtained items that don't level with you but are good enough for your level. Is there a point to crafting as you level besides not having to grind it all out at once when you max out?

Oh the binds are no problem - I've got a Naga Razr mouse and a good keyboard for pressign lots of buttons (the F keys are right above the numbered keys, with no space btwn them). It's more that I'm staring at cooldowns and keeping track of my powers, and so can't really pay as much attention to just enjoying the battle play out strategically.

Crafting is pretty uninteresting for the most part. However there are som items at max that you make that are decent. Make sure to get your DOFF's rolling - this will pick up the pace of leveling and you can then kind of pick and choose your missions. Also DOFF's give crafitng material.

Also another tip. Do the daily mission, "Officer reports" - something like that. It is a mission to run three user made content. Then search under the community content by click the drop arrow down , type in the search field "timebox". Select the three missions for earth space dock (1,2,3). Goto earth space dock and walk out the tranporter area and click the wall. This will complete the three missions and the daily. You get good skill points and 1440 dilithium all for about a minutes worth of work. Do every 20 hours...

No I think you're right Bloo. The only people subbed around here are those who bought lifetimes before the game released.

Even I was only subbed for a couple months last summer with a free deal and I bought a disc copy for some extra uniforms and another free month. And I had 3 characters created then, and they have let me keep all 3 since F2P. I didn't have to choose 2 to be active or anything.

Is there really any point to subscribing monthly? To me, it looks like the things you get are just an extra character slot and some bag slots. On top of that, you get some monthly doses of in-game currency, but less than if you just spend the money directly on the currency itself rather than the subscription. None of this makes any sense to me. I read an outdated matrix that said you needed to be subscribed to get ships beyond the Lt. Commander level, so I went ahead and put a sub in, but that turned out not to be true. I also found out you can just exchange the paid currency for dilithium, which makes the idea of subscribing even less sane.

I mean, instead of the $15/mo, I can just drop $10 every few months in Zen currency, transfer it to this game, and get whatever through the C-points or change those C-points in for dilithium and get what I like. Or just slowly rack up dilithium and get the C-points. Is that incorrect? What am I missing here?

Correct - right now it better to just take your $15 and buy what you need. STO has no gated content for F2P so unless you plan on doing Foundry stuff it better to just spend your cash on what you need. If you where big into the Foundry then it better get life.

Hott! I'll hop on tonight to check it out, probably!

Oh, I thought Season Six already went live. Huurrr. I guess that's why some of the info I was looking at and the actual in-game play seemed oddly incongruent!

Are community authored down? I see nothing righ tnow.

Yeah, best I can tell you might be able to get a share of a Community Authored mission but the search and select has been down since the S6 patch. Aslo it appears also that the Klingon side can not interact with the Lore daily consoles with any tactic I now pocess.

I dunno. I don't find it boring. I enjoy most aspects of the game, enough that I bought a lifetime when the discount came up in June.

But I don't play every day, or even every week, as I cycle through other games. For me (ADD) that's normal. Keeps things fresh.

Correct, been down since S6 live...

It's not alot but.... now that this star base building thing is going on I should offer what I do to whatever fleet everyone is in now, if your interested. (If someone who only does this junk is better in the fleet than out XD).

Currently I do the following on 4 Star Fleet and one Klingon characters.

1. Try to get in around 20 Duty Officer assignments per day, sometimes more and sometimes less.
2. Do the daily Lore question for 400ish Dilithium and the data chip turn in
3. I do the Cybear Quicky - Investigate Daily Officer Reports - click the panel and get 1400ish Dilithium.
4. Turn in contraban as I have enough for the 2000 Dilithium bounty.

I do those daily and do more when I want (sorta rare nowa days). Just post here or im @greenbeandemon in STO.

Just jumped in STO for the first time last night. Played about 8 hours and I've made so many mistakes I want to start over. But I won't I am really enjoying this game aside from the crashes. I'll be looking through this thread later and looking to see if the GWJ Fleet is still operational. Hope to see some of you out there.

I've been out of STO for a while now, thinking about getting back into it. I have 3 max level chars, 2 Feds and 1 KDF. I refreshed myself on skills and items and ships, etc. I was looking over all my Bridge Officer skills and saw some things I want to change. However, when I left a lot of skills were bugged and useless.

1: Are there still bugged BOff skills that I want to avoid?

2: What are some good things to start with on my level 50's? Crafting? STFs? Dailys? Just throwing words out there, I don't really know where to go for any of that.

If anyone is looking to joining a good fleet contact me and I can get you in SEF

So, I've played a few hours and gathered a few of these Ferengi lockboxes. It seems these will be going away soon. So, I need to spend real money to get these master keys? Is the loot inside worth the effort?
