Saints Row The Third Catch-All

I got 100% on my first character, then started over and played through until right before the carrier mission (after which they put up all the bridges). On my first character I wanted to collect everything, unlock everything etc. but on my second one I'm going to avoid the upgrades that break the game, only collect the cars I actually intend to use, and otherwise make a perfect "screwin' around" game.

Finally saw TheWalt today and gave him SR3 360 for his now quite belated birthday. I have told him he must post his conversion testimony here once he's played an hour or two.

I'm definitely going to be picking up the base game tonight before the sale ends. Is the base + all the DLC worth $25? or should is there stuff that isn't very good and shoot skip?

Just got this game from the steam sale. I seem to be messing something up but the part where you fall out of the plane and after you fight the guys in mid-air, I can't seem to catch up with shaundi. Been falling for about 15 min so far and just kinda keep falling. Any ideas?

Edit: ok nevermind. Looks like I just needed to get hit with a box. Still it's a rather long fall sequence.

I don't recall needing to hit a box to trigger something. But it's been awhile since I restarted.

There is a button you can press that makes you fall faster IIRC.

I enjoyed the three mission-based DLC packs, but I also became a full-on SR3 fanatic. They aren't exactly essential. If that price includes all the costumes and weapons, etc., then it's a pretty nice deal. The game is easily worth $60 or even $120 without any DLC.

Yes, I would pay $120 tomorrow for an SR4 that was magically guaranteed to be as much fun as SR3.

That's a steal. Anyone going, "Oh, DLC bit X wasn't that wonderful" is likely miffed because it wasn't dirt-cheap when they got it. In my opinion, this game would make a far better candidate as a fully-packed GotY re-release than Arkham City. And here's the digital equivalent of that for you not for $60, not for $50, but twenty-five freakin' dollars. What do you want, a full on hazing?

I ended up checking each of the DLC descriptions on Steam and picked up the Spec Ops vehicle pack, Hoverbike with sniper rifle and the grenade launcher. Wasn't that interested in the ones that gave extra clothes.

Good choices.

I agree. Lots of the DLC was overpriced and kind of meh, but enough of it is good that it's well worth the extra $12.50.

The only thing I don't like about the idea is that it includes the Bloodsucker pack, which permanently changes your "kill a human shield" move into a neck bite.

I think I'm going to use the sale to gather up all the weapon and skin packs except Bloodsucker and Penthouse. Neither of those interest me at all. Invincible pack too, but at least that one is bundled with 3 other packs I want.

EDIT: Actually, that pack has Funtime! which I already own from the pre-order. So I save $0.02 if I buy the 3 pieces of the bundle I don't already have. Woo maths.

I did go for bloodsucker because of the XP and money boost. Time is tight and I didn't want to grind for cash. And really, what's so bad about tearing out someone's throat with your teeth for health?

If there was a way to disable it I'd be more willing to buy it.

Just picked this up in the Steam sale last night. Unfortunately, I am having a bit of trouble getting the game to detect my wired 360 controller. This is the "new to me" machine I bought a few weeks ago from GameGuru, and it is running a fresh install of Windows 7 that is fully updated so I believe I have the latest 360 controller drivers. Other Steam (Beat Hazard) and non-steam (Kingdoms of Amalur) detect the controller automatically.

I thought that I might just need to enable the controller in the game options, but while I can find a way to setup the gamepad button configuration I can't find any checkbox or option in the menu that allows me to choose to use the controller instead of mouse and keyboard.

Thanks

Don't start saying that crap. If a Dev. out there see's enough of crazy talk like that, we'll be paying that much for every scrap of game out there

IME, it'll respond to either. And better yet, "press this button" prompts refer to whichever device you last used.

(I did find that it got confused when I had both the XBox controller and my Logitech 3D joystick plugged in, but everything worked fine with the joystick unplugged.)

Have you double-checked that other games can detect the controller?

misplacedbravado wrote:

Yeah, both Beat Hazard and Kingdoms of Amalur detect and use the 360 with no problem. I don't have another joystick, but I do have a Belkin n25te installed and plugged in. Next time I'm at the PC, I'll unplug it and reboot to see if that makes a difference. I honestly never even thought about that conflicting, but I suppose anything is possible. sh*t like this is one of the reasons why I've mostly avoided PC gaming for the past 15 years.

Some games are a bit quirky with detecting the 360 controller. What works most reliably for me is not even touching the mouse or keyboard after starting the game, so the first (and only) input the game sees is from the gamepad.

I... I don't understand. Is your mouse broken?
But seriously, there IS some chatter that other 'controller' devices need to be disabled for it to detect properly.

Thanks for the heads up about checking for conflicts with other joysticks/controllers everybody. This helped me narrow down my google searches and find others with this exact issue (i.e. conflict with the Nostromo/Belkin). Apparently simply unplugging the Belkin and manually disabling its device drivers aren't enough to fix this for most people with the Nostromo/Belkin. I can confirm that it doesn't fix it for me either. Instead, it looks like the only "fix" is to uninstall the Belkin completely.

I don't think I'm going to mess with uninstalling and reinstalling it on a regular basis. So Saints Row is going on the pile until I've got time to play it and only it.

Thanks again guys.

GTA 4 looks like a million bucks, even now, even on 360, but plays like crap and takes itself way too seriously.

I had no problems at all with the graphics for SR3. To me, they perfectly suited the funny, unserious nature of the game.

Agreed. I decided to give GTA4 another chance the other day, and coming to it fresh off SR3, it's feels even more incredibly turgid than the last time I shelved it. Some of the characters in GTA4 are kinda interesting, but none of all that long winded yapping about America being the land of opportunity and whether you can leave your past behind you manages to generate a fraction of the engagement and attachment that SR3 creates in three or so minutes of my Boss and Pierce singing along to What I Got.

And the graphics are lovely. The stylized, cartoony look matches the tone of the story and gameplay.

Generally, I think open-world sandboxy games are better served by a goofier tone, at least if it's a densely populated world like GTA/Saints Row. So much of the fun in these games comes from seeing the systems interact and creating chaos, and a serious storyline clashes with that.

I agreed with your whole post until here, where I must say that Red Dead Redemption is every bit as good a game as SR3, and one of the most serious games I've played (serious without seeming stupid).

Well, I was probably being overly broad there. It's down to what kind of interactions your systems create and encourage, and whether they make sense within the setting. I haven't played RDR, but I'm pretty sure you can't get into a car chase, lose control and careen into a group of pedestrians, jump out, and start unloading with rocket launchers and grenades to take out your target.

Having modern weaponry and and a densely populated game world ampilifies the potential carnage, and if the setting is a contemporary city, I need some kind of stylization to make it work is all I'm saying.

With the DLC for this hitting 75% off today I'd like to know if there's any of it that folks rate as "must have". I've barely started the game, so I don't want anything that breaks the story by making me invincible etc, but if there are any good mission packs or weapon & vehicle packs that really make the game more fun I'd love to hear about it before the sale expires tomorrow.

Genii Bowl VII was my favorite DLC. I enjoyed all three of the season pass bits, which are all best played after the core game, imho.

The only one I don't think is worth picking up (at least while they're on sale) is the Penthouse pack. The Bloodsucker pack permanently replaces the neck-snap you can do to human shields with a neck-bite that gives you a bit of health, which is pretty neat, but you can't turn it off once you get it without using a mod. I'd say the ones that come in the Season Pass (Genkibowl, Gangstas in Space, and The Trouble With Clones) are the only real must-haves, as they're the only ones that have extra missions. When looking at the DLC, be aware that there are two different bundles not listed on the main page, each containing 4 of the smaller costume/item/vehicle DLCs at an even further discount.

Edit - None really break the story. Though they do add optional cheats you can turn on, they're mostly things you can actually get by playing the game normally (near-invincibility (being in a vehicle that blows up still kills you), infinite ammo, etc.). The only potentially game "breaking" things are that you can start the game with some really nice weapons and vehicles (laser tank, VTOL). They're not that game breaking though, since you could just pick a fight with either a rival gang or the cops, continue it until they bring out the big guns/tanks, and steal them.

Shark Gun. Comin' atcha!

My general impression from other people (because so far I've only scratched the surface of Saint's) is that you probably can't go wrong with the Season Pass at $5.

For the DLC I've already got the Season Pass + Funtime! I think I'm grabbing everything but Invincible (just extra cheats), Bloodsucker (eh), Penthouse (no thanks), Genki Girls (not worth $3 for 3 vehicles).

So that works out to:
Witches & Wieners
Purple Ops Pack
Money Shot Pack
Z Style Pack
Shark Attack Pack

Invincible does have the superhero costumes though, and if you pick up the Maximum Pleasure Pack, you effectively get it for 2 cents.
Edit - Maybe it doesn't? I can't remember offhand if the super hero outfits are available at Let's Pretend in the base game.

I don't have any DLC (yet?), and can buy the superhero costumes in my game.
