I'm pretty sure I have a 19-21in spare widescreen monitor in the basement. DVI/HDMI/(VGA--gah).

I cannot guarantee it isn't full of spiders. It's in the basement. I do not go into the basement. Because I heard once there were spiders. From my wife. Because she does laundry down there. **shiver**

I have two 1GB sticks of Ram from Dell (DDR2 533MHz) and two 1GB sticks from Corsair (DDR2 533MHz).

I also have a 19" VGA Dell Monitor that I'd be happy to donate if it's newer than what you have. Looks like this.

Don't forget that AutoDesk also offer a lot of their software for free if you are using for education purposes.

I just grabbed Maya for that very reason (next semester elective in my Masters, can't wait to 'play' with some 3D again).

Thought you might like to see who you're helping out

My sister with Liam, Aiden, and Nico.

Liam being recognized for being on honor roll last year. He's a smart kid.

Oh, he's a Steelers fan.

Just kidding! I would love to contribute to his steam library, is there any type of game you would rather we avoid?

Nothing excessively violent or profane, simply to avoid the wrath of my sister. She has a nasty right hook.

Maybe Defense Grid: The Awakening?

That's on sale today, although I should have a spare copy coming from their kickstarter I could throw at this.

With regards game dev. I would really recommend that he starts on something like GameMaker and the first GameMaker book (the original PC Spelunky is a GameMaker project)
http://www.yoyogames.com/make/
http://www.amazon.com/The-Game-Maker...

It's a fast and understandable way to make some games. It introduces core ideas about games programming; sprites and collision detection and subtly introduces ideas that underpin Object Orientation. He'll be able to get results fast. Importantly it's way, way, way less daunting than being given a C++ dev environment and SDL and told to just get on with it. And GameMaker has the benefit of being pretty powerful and versatile.

From there , if he wants to get deeper in to it there's an Advanced GameMaker book or he'll have an excellent conceptual grounding for a more serious programming language and a more "mature" games engine or dev environment.

I think these beginning game design/development steps are exactly what Kodu's made for, and on top of that, it's free!

I have an AMD Athlon 64 3800+ processor, an Asus A8N-SLI motherboard, and 2 gigs of Corsair RAM that I could send your way. I feel embarassed even offering due to how old they are for a gaming rig, but in the absence of anything better you're welcome to them.

Failing that, I have copies of Torchlight, Plants vs. Zombies, and Abe's Odyssey to gift on Steam.

Vlambeer (Super Crate Box, Serious Sam Random Encounter, Radical Fishing) does most of their work in GameMaker as well. It's pretty good at what it does.

Well, Steam Sales hit today. So I gifted Civ V GOT edition. Hope he gets lots out of it
And scratch that one of the list please.

I just gifted Orcs Must Die GOTY edition. I hope he enjoys it.

I've got Portal 1 & 2 waiting in my Steam inventory to gift as soon as the friend invite goes through.

I was just thinking about buying that to send on. Great minds, I guess!

Yo, how can I send you a copy of a GameMaker Licence key and the intro GameMaker book?

Would a Rasberry Pi also be acceptable? I know people already have their gifts sent to his Steam account, but with all the education material being generated, this seems like the perfect thing for a RasPi, plus its only like $50 after shipping, tax, a case and memory card.

I don't have any hardware, but once the friend invite gets accepted he'll have a copy of Magicka in his steam account.

I've got an extra copy of Portal 2 gifted to me. If you want I can send that and you send 1.

I'd be more then happy to gift him a copy of Bastion if you think he'd be interested. (I just checked my steam account and i also have extra copies of Magicka, Cthulhu Saves the World, and Breath of Death VII, if he or anyone else would like them.)

OK Trichy, just sent a PayPal amount through to you. It was my Steam Sale Budget, but I know those funds will be better used by you and this endeavor, rather than being used to bloat my pile, and benefit nobody.

Let me know via PM if it doesn't make it you in the next 24-48 hrs and I'll chase it up at my end if I need to

Okay, so the response has been overwhelming, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate all of this. I'm contacting people who have made offers one by one, so if you haven't heard from me, you will soon.

If you've made donations via PayPal but wish to remain anonymous, please let me know. Edit: I will be listing those who donated, but not amounts. I plan to post everyone who has been generous enough to contribute anything this effort. For those of you donating games via Steam, I'm running his account until we unveil the surprise, so please be patient as I respond to friend requests.

Finally, Liam is leaving for chess camp (told you he was one of us) next week. Following that, he's preparing to start at the local magnet school (a gifted program) at the end of the month. He's excited as all hell, especially considering that the school as a chess class taught by a former grandmaster.

I sent a friend request so I can gift him some good games during the sale. Probably others have the same idea, so it'd be good if we can keep the thread updated with the games he was gifted, or he'll end up with multiple copies of the same game.

Just gifted Liam Hoard, Terraria and Binding of Isaac over Steam. Best of luck, Liam!

I can't get Steam to let me add him as a friend - their servers are between the hammer and the anvil, that's for sure. Sooner, if you get through before I do go ahead and do yours. I'll keep an eye on his list so I don't double.

You should be good now. Also, OP updated.

Have you considered getting him a gog account?.

I'm sure he'd love Alpha Centauri, although it could be hard to go back to after Civ V.

Awesome. I'll hit him tomorrow after payday.

Sure, it's not just because there aren't any more games for you to buy.
