iPhone 4 Repairs Needed... Advice?

I've had my iPhone 4 since a few months after launch, and it's starting to feel the effects of time-- the battery needs to be replaced, and the home button is becoming unresponsive. Since the iPhone 4 has the retina display, and since I just bought an iPad 3rd gen, I really don't feel much pressure to upgrade yet (even though the iPhone 5 will surely be coming this year).

I was looking into repairing these things myself, and the battery seems easy enough. The repair guide for the home button, however, has over 30 steps, and I just don't know if I want to mess around with doing it myself.

Does anyone have any experience with getting their phones repaired by a third party? I don't want to go to Apple on this, as they seem to want to just give you a new phone most of the time. I'm happy with my jailbroken phone the way it is, though, and would like to keep my data intact.

Is it the home button not recognizing it is clicked? Have you tried the alcohol fix? It is pretty common, works, and there are plenty of videos showing how to do it. My wife's has the same problem and I am going to try that on it based on the good word online.

Not only have I never tried it, I have no idea what it is

OK. You try it, and let me know how it works

My home button was having some intermittent issues as well. The double click wasn't always working, so I just tried the alcohol fix. I followed the written instructions, except I used rubbing alcohol instead of the nail polish remover. Before turning it back on I let it dry up for about 20 minutes, and voila everything works like a charm. The button is just as responsive as it used to be day one.

You only need a very tiny amount. to cover that home button. Be careful how much you pour on. I should also point out I do have a screen protector on my phone so I never got any liquid on the actual glass screen.

I hope this fix lasts and I don't end up with other problems in the near future! Knock on wood!
