Peter Jackson directs "The Hobbit"

Morgan Freeman, surely.

Nah, it was Robert Downey Jr. and Sam Jackson

Edit:
And stop calling me Shirley.

Dammit!

I have no doubt they'll completely cut Beorn. Most of the other events will probably be represented, though I'm interested to see how PJ presents the Goblins (Orcs) and the Mountain Troll encounter, given how both are portrayed in LotR. I'm also curious to see if they add any hint at Sauron's presence in Mirkwood. Gandalf didn't sort this out until later, but it's one way PJ could try and tie The Hobbit to the existing LotR movies. No doubt the entire tone of the movie will be changed though. I fully expect another action film rather than the almost whimsical adventure the book portrays.

According to IMDB, Mikael Persbrandt is playing Beorn.

As long as he gets to do his own mo-cap and it isn't just Andy Serkis pretending to be a bear this time. Spread the mo-cap love, Andy!

Yup, you're correct. It looks like Jackson is adapting the fuller story around The Hobbit that Tolkien fleshed out in the LOTR appendices and Unfinished Tales, and not just the children's story. So that'll include lots of the backstory of Thorin's ancestors Thror and Thrain getting kicked out of the Lonely Mountain and Moria, Thror's ring of power, Sauron being discovered by Gandalf in Mirkwood and getting chased out by Saruman, Elrond, Galadriel and others. Tolkien already tied The Hobbit pretty tightly to LOTR, so Jackson just has to plumb all that, and it looks like he is, just judging by the cast list let alone the trailer.

So it won't be "The Hobbit", which like I mentioned above, is a good thing tonally: it needs to be turned into the epic story that Tolkien created afterwards.

Definitely doing it wrong.

Damnit.

Is it really that difficult to disassociate a movie with a book? He admits to liking the movies but doesn't like that they don't have enough whatever it is that captured his imagination as a kid. Well, why can't you just enjoy the movies for what they are? MOVIES. It was such a rare feeling, going to the movies and being blown away by them. Given that I hadn't read any Tolkien yet, I equate seeing Fellowship to seeing the first Matrix. I had no idea what to expect and was completely blown away. Having read the books, I now love the books and the movies. Is that really so hard?

No, it really isn't. For books I love, movies have had very little impact on how I view them.

I saw Woman in Black last week, and it was a monumental disappointment compared the book. I have to tell you, when I think of Artur Kipps, I don't think of Daniel Radcliffe. As perfect as I thought he would be for the role, the film told such a different story that it just doesn't compute.

I would suppose if I saw the movie first of any book, that I would picture those characters. That was certainly the case with Fight Club.

Hell, I don't picture Tim Robbins and Laurence Fishbourne when I think about Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. And Fishbourne's character was an actual Irishman!

Try watching the original Woman in Black movie. I haven't seen the new one, but the original was pretty eerie for a low budget flick with a nobody cast.

Latest behind-the-scenes video from the location shoots is out.

Double-post for double the fun!

There is a very effective way not to be disappointed by The Hobbit movie (or any movie in general) -- simply not to watch it.

Lovin' it. Even though the dwarves aren't tamped inside their barrels. Still... lovin' it.

The post was split in two because one post wasn't big enough to contain the whole story.

Great new production blog.

Will people please stop calling Tangle and Jay shirley?

Thanks for posting. I knew James Nesbitt was in this from seeing cast lists and stills and the like, but it hadn't really dawned on me until just now.

New poster

Oh, and they finished filming (for both parts) last week.

If only I could get a theater to myself. There is no way in hell I am going to have the experience of 'The Hobbit' ruined by other people that cannot control themselves in public places.

I told you, it is a medical condition! When I see hairy feet I just...well anyway, I am really sorry about your shoes.

This one's on me.

Can't wait. Been watching the LOTR Extended Edition and the documentaries. Some of the digital effects don't hold up all that well, which is to be expected, but they are such great movies.

And Peter Jackson's near psychopathic attention to detail should make for a major improvement in the effects, while still being charming films.

Odd the thread still says "produced" since he's directing. I know there was a time when that wasn't locked down- perhaps this thread title is just a time capsule?

Entertainment Weekly has a nice feature on The Hobbit, including a mini-profile on each one of the dwarves.

It would require ratboy to come back and actually change the post.

Oh yes it's all fine for Ratboy to abscond you say - but look what happens now when someone really gets hurt =/

I have the power ... to change thread titles.
