True on both points. I wish your voice was nicer too.

Kicked! Love it and just perfect for my two kids!

Cross-posting this from the Board Gaming thread:

I don't think this was mentioned before, but the iPad adaption of Alien Frontiers is in their last week of their Kickstarter and they're barely past the 50% mark. The physical edition is a fun dice-based worker placement game and a Kickstarter darling (the base game + expansion were Kickstarter successes), so it'd be a shame to see this fail.

$10 price point is probably the reason they're not funded.

Wouldn't surprise me, although that doesn't seem that high based on other board game adaptations.

The only $10 game I've seen is Carcassonne, I think. There's a lot of competition in the iOS board game space, if you're not a name as big as Carcassonne I don't think you can pull off that high of a price.

Which is sad for them because it could easily be worth it, for all I know.

I found the rewards to be kind of distasteful, tbh. Gabe said on twitter that the rewards shouldn't be equal to the level KSed and my opinion is 180 degrees from that. Just a difference of opinion.

And the thing is? I love PA.

/shrug

Just rubs me the wrong way, I guess. Their ads are always vetted and pretty inconspicuous. Seems like a silly thing to kickstart.

/2 cents

I too love PA, but I couldn't care less about ads that I have trained myself to not even see. Even if I do look at one of their ads, it is usually relevant to my interests which makes the ad informative and not a waste of space.

I kinda feel the same way. Sure, it's a nice idea, but I really don't notice the ads. Hell, after the dickwolves debacle, I don't even read the front page that much anymore. I just go straight to the comic

I just looked at the rewards. If you're not going to use them the way they're supposed to work then you shouldn't use Kickstarter. Actually they just shouldn't have used it.

I totally get where PA is coming from. They would rather not have to broker and maintain those relationships if the fans will completely fund things. It's somewhat similar to the problem TV is having. I'd rather pay producers to create content and deliver it to my door without the intrusion of ads, or the need to meet the advertiser's demands. Given that the PA boys talk sh*t about the shenanigans and stupidity of some of the very same people who fund them, I can see why they'd love to get out of that arrangement plus have more free time to do side projects that aren't ad related.

Note: I haven't kicked it myself (yet... not sure if I will). But I get it.

Oh wow, those rewards are horrid. When OP was talking about them I was thinking he was talking about the unlocking tiers.

It's as if Gabe and Tycho were doing a kickstarter, not Mike and Jerry. I was not amused.

I thought the rewards were funny.

I am not seeing what people are complaining about with the rewards? Sure many are all "hey I'm an internet celebrity, pay to feel the touch of my presence" which I don't care at all about, but they seem fine for Kickstarter.

Ouya: Open Gaming Platform for your TV.

Gaming websites are exploding about this right now. I'll admit my interest is perked, but they're not considering a lot of the business end of the project. Namely, marketplace, disk space, and how well the android OS functions as a dedicated gaming machine. I'm skeptical beyond belief, but if it works, I'll buy into it at a later date.

Dumb name.

Defense Grid 2 / DG1 DLC kickstarter! (Although I'm really surprised they don't have enough moneyhats with all the work Valve has made them do on Counter-Strike)

I'll have to double check it again, but I didn't think anything was terrible about them. I think MC Frontalot did something similar with his music video project for Solved.

However, I kinda agree with the sentiment that KS is probably not the right venue for this. On the other hand, it's an existing infrastructure and if they fail to get enough money (yeah, right) no one is charged which makes it better than just putting a PayPal or Amazon Payments link on the website. The real problem is that people are expecting actual rewards (which exist at some level) for a fairly intangible goal. Although it is a goal I agree with.

I dunno. Will probably give them some money but probably no more than I give to sites like TWiT, RPS, and here.

I haven't read through it, but this and PA make me sad. Kickstarter just becoming a "we want money" place, rather than a place for startups, or good/different ideas, turns my childish smile into a frown. Not a big issue, but far from my ideal. Whatever, let the sheep get what they want.

While I somewhat agree with you, I feel the DG2 kickstart is structured in such a way that they are trying to gauge interest in a potential sequel. Right now, the project is just to fund more DLC at the bare minimum. It's not terribly different than what Asymmetric was trying to do with Word Realms or some other projects.

EDIT: They also mention in their FAQ that DG1 made back the production costs, but not enough to fund a new game + engine. Which isn't terribly surprising when you take a $10-15 game and remove the 20-30% cut that Valve or MS are getting off every sale. They also say that there's no publisher interest since no one is interested in smaller games unless they're F2P/Social or AAA. Which is a topic that's come up before from companies like Double Fine and Cliff Bleszinski made an entire GDC presentation on the death of the medium-sized game.

I also think it's a lot harder for raw unproven game studios to get a sizable project funded on KS. Other mediums are having less trouble, but the problem with a game project is that unless there's a playable demo or alpha available you have a significantly harder time convincing people your game is actually going to be fun or interesting. Established firms have more resources which means they can shoot for bigger goals and make a lot more noise. I think if you were to pay less attention to the highlights and dig into the kickstarter site you'll probably find the startups you're looking for.

Despite the name, I am not involved in this Kickstarter. But I'm supporting the hell out of it!

Special thanks to my favorite porn star, Jayhawk Samantha Ryan for pointing this out.
