Republicans discover that Islam is a religion

Next on the agenda: Scientology Vs Republicans!

Well I like Scientology. I also like Republicans. But which is better? There's only one way to find out...

That's just another example of how Christians are under attack in this nation. They organized to get government money, and then they didn't get 100% of it!

OMFG, Watson is where I went to high school.

I told you guys how batsh*t gung-ho people are where I come from! But noooo I get told "you're just picking on Southerners."

This is pretty amusing. In the comments someone was suggesting that the Church of Satan should open up a school and get some of those funds too. The mascot could be the Fallen Angels or something.

Edit: I cried a little when I read this:

“I actually support funding for teaching the fundamentals of America’s Founding Fathers’ religion, which is Christianity, in public schools or private schools,” the District 64 Representative said Monday.

“Unfortunately it will not be limited to the Founders’ religion,” Hodges said. “We need to insure that it does not open the door to fund radical Islam schools. There are a thousand Muslim schools that have sprung up recently. I do not support using public funds for teaching Islam anywhere here in Louisiana.”

It is shocking...SHOCKING that the voters in LA have put a woman this misinformed in charge of representing them at the national level.

Congress seemingly is made up of a few smart crooks and a herd of idiots.

Two ideologies enter, only one leaves!

Someone should ask this fool why the original settlers came to this country. Either that or ask him if he things the 1st amendment is optional.

It's disgraceful that people like this idiot can hold public office.

She's in the state legislature, not Congress. Just fyi.

Unfortunately, I'm VERY familiar with the district she represents within the state, and unless things have changed radically in the last couple years since the last time I visited family there, she's voicing the opinion of the majority.

I find it hard to believe that there are a thousand Muslim schools in Louisiana.

Yes, my brain blocked out everything else that was said, for my own safety.

Throw them both to the lions, says I.

I'm sure this woman likes to talk about how she loves the Constitution, which she is probably incapable of actually reading.

What are they, Christians?

Yeah, I grew up in that area too. Watson is getting more suburban these days, but I'd say this woman unfortunately represents that group well.

Well now I'm curious: I went to Live Oak. What school did you attend?

The delicious irony is that the GOP were big supporters of Islam during the 1980's. In fact, they heavily courted Muslim voters during the 1980's and 90's because, demographically, they aligned very much with their social, economic, and geopolitical interests.

In the lens of racial politics, it appears that Muslims and Hispanics are just disposable commodities to this current GOP.

We lived in eastern Baton Rouge (Sherwood Forest). I went to Catholic High for high school.

Wow. Small world!

Its too bad she's a state representative. I think on the national level these nitwits required to take an oath stating that they'll uphold the Constitution? I think she should be brought up on charges of treason!

Why is government money going towards religious ventures in the first place? Aren't those two things supposed to be not together?

The great part about America is that you can give as much money as you want to any religion you want and the government stays out of it. That was the idea anyway.

I'm mildly comforted by this tbh. Not a representative democracy if she's not speaking for her constituency.

Except handing government money to religious schools is the new backdoor conservatives are exploiting to push their idea of privatized education. That is exceptionally bad since we require an informed constituency to have a functioning representative democracy.

Oh dear. She bit a wooden leg and now her teeth hurt.

Frankly, the only law to survive scrutiny would have to provide the funds for any recognized religious school. I rather like the idea of more well educated Muslims and Jews courtesy of Republicans.

Now, and again, someone MUST tell me 1. How some people came to believe all of the founding fathers were Christian. And 2. How they came to believe ALL Christian denominations are alike. Last I checked the Catholics and Lutherans still have some animosity. Also, GASP, the Catholic schools will teach the kids about how our founding fathers were of many different belief systems, some atheist even; they will also learn that Genesis is a myth, the earth if 6-7 billion years old, and that comdoms are evil(damn found some common ground there).

It started here, and has continued here.

KingGorilla wrote:

First they need to get the Christians in power. Then they'll start weeding out the ones who aren't TRUE Christians (i.e. evangelical protestants).

I was also reminded of how Texas Purged Jefferson from their history books. Are nickels still acceptable currency in Texas?

Yeah, that's where I disagree. Tax dollars shouldn't be used to "educate" someone else's child that the Earth is 5,000 years old. That's just an egregious waste of social resources. People are completely free to indoctrinate their children however they see fit, but they are completely responsible for picking up the tab to do so. That nonsense shouldn't be subsidized by Uncle Sam.

Ironically, mostly because of dedicated religious schools. As Farscry pointed out one of the key players in the ongoing conservative revision of American history is David Barton, an evangelical minister, believer in Dominionism, and a proud graduate of Oral Roberts University. He has systematically pushed the idea that America was founded as a Christian nation and that the separation of church and state is a myth.

He created the Wallbuilders, a group that promotes the idea that America has forgotten its religious roots and corrects that by publishing books and videos that promote his heavily revised (and completely erroneous) version of history which are then used in Christian schools and by religiously motivated homeschoolers.

As conservative media has proven, you can successfully create an alternative reality if you have enough people continually repeating the same things and don't allow any conflicting information into the bubble.

Since it's essentially an evangelical Christian movement the other Christian denominations don't matter because they're just wrong. Catholics are viewed as a cult that worships the Pope and Lutherans are way too liberal and have strayed from the Bible.

I think that conservative media has shown that with enough repetition you don't have to worry much about competing information.

Ah, but OG, this is an interesting quirk. Kansas and Texas are revising the whole state to this small and factually incorrect mindset-5k old earth, creationism. Vouchers keep the crazies at home.

Now then, a very small portion of parents will use these to get their kids into the nut bar schools, and onto nut bar colleges. The majority of parents are taking the vouchers to get their kids into the best college prep programs and schools available, and then onto larger and more prestigious universities to become lawyers, engineers, doctors, data entry specialists.

And as we know the dark liberal arts programs are the death of these ideologies.

Now add into this that many of these ultra right wing colleges and at home curriculum are not accredited-IE you cannot even get a job requiring a HS diploma. So send your kid to a place to make you feel better, but kill her future.

I am much more concerned with the threat to the broader education system, and I am content to let some members create some religious utopia or ghetto.
