Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen Catch-All

Co-op would be nice but Capcom isn't the sort of company that messes with what works. How long has everyone wanted online in all the Monster Hunter games? No weird DLC in their fighters? Mega Man games?

It's a possibility, but I wouldn't put money on it myself.

But ironic that they added co-op to Resident Evil, the only game that didn't need it.

Somehow I missed that original quote, but Monster Hunter Tri-G (on Wii of all platforms) had an online mode where four players could meet up and go questing.

I've put about 400 hours into Monster Hunter Tri's online, I'm quite aware (Tri-G is the 3DS game, no online). The PS2 games did as well. Talkin' about the PSP games, because MH is a handheld franchise in reality.

And that saddens me greatly. Monster Hunter is one of my all time favorite games. I don't think the PSP versions are as good despite adding a lot of monsters.

I am a little late to the game, but I just picked this up last night. Looking forward to the game and reading back through the thread.

Any tips for a beginner?

Feel free to add me on Xbox.

In towns and the Encampment there are notice boards with quests. Pick up all quests that have you kill or pick up x of something. Don't pick up an escort quest, unless you want to do it right away. Several of the first escort quests are to the Shadowfort, which is actually a pretty long journey. It's doable at early levels, but quite epic for an escort quest.

The game will really open up once you get to Gran Soren.

I also just started. Got to Gran Soren. The more I play, the more I like this game.

I played for a couple hours last weekend and it didn't grab me at all. I haven't touched it since.... I don't think I got to Gran Soren, so maybe I should give it another chance.

A good tip for a beginner I think would be to keep a close eye on any bandits that are wearing very dark armor and have a sword and shield. I don't know if it was just me but they seemed to be manly as hell at low level. And they're just mixed into groups of regular bandits. oh also on your way to the shadow fort...I'd recommend to NOT cut though the middle of the Devilfire Grove...it harbors nothing but terror until about the time you hit your 30s.

Yeah, I came pretty close to quitting right away. And when I played some just now... I'm still not completely into it yet, I guess.

Be sure to scour the beach on your way to GS. People seem to leave a lot of chests full of money there.

The game gets off to a slow start, but it really picks up after you reach Gran Soren. Everything up to the encampment is pretty much just an extended tutorial.

It's been a while since I've played this, time to take Bertie for another spin, and taking Etienne this time as well.

Oh, and the intro music is starting to grow on me... it's catchy!

Went back to Grand Soren this weekend and need to find an idol so I can get upgraded weapons. Where can one find them? One of the pawns said that he knew a woman in Grand Soren had one, but there are no quest markers for this quest. Tips?

Spoiler:

You need to do the Escort Duty quest for Fournival's daughter. Your level of idol will depend on how well you complete the quest, so you might want to use a guide to make sure you get it perfect.

Spoiler:

If you help Fourneval out with the eviction, he should ask you to escort his daughter around the city. If you do everything she asks to her standard, you get the golden idol. You need to find her quickly when she hides (either in the Bar or Inn), bring a Flask of Water for when she gets thirsty, don't get behind or ahead, and let her win the footrace.

This wiki page details the whole thing. I messed it up a little, but oh well.

Idol quests.

Spoiler:

There are actually several other idols in the game too. One or two bronze you can find lying around, and a silver you get from a boss kill quest. The gold idol improves the shop you give it to the most though, but without foreknowledge (i.e., a from a FAQ or because you are on your second play through) its pretty unlikely you will meet the criteria to win it from that quest. Something tells me that might have been an intentional choice.

Looks like I'm not getting the gold one then. :/

Ah well.

Go ahead, I think you'll find he's learned a few nice spells in the meantime
I haven't rolled with Khardan lately since we're over level 30 now, but I think I'll take him back, I kinda miss him! All the others have been annoying twats…
I like how the autonomy of pawns makes them more like real characters. You grow to like one's look, voice and "temperament", and it feels weird to have someone else instead.

And that theme? It's da bomb.

Bah! I didn't know about getting a golden idol from the girl. When she said to run, I ran! I'm not gonna' lose a foot race to that little princess! No, sir!

Anyway, as has been said, you can get a silver from a monster kill quest later on and you can also find a bronze just laying around

Spoiler:

in the cave where the dragonborn(?) stays near the giant drawing of the spearman on the hill

Going solo can really be advantageous when looting chests and also fighting dragons with the Autonomy skill.

I got a lot of great items in the Everfall and obliterated a couple of top level enemies. I may do another run through the game and go solo the entire time because the Autonomy skill is really quite cool.

i just started to read this thread this weekend and i thought i add people who play it on PS3 to my friends list to play with their pawns. so who ever wonders from who you got a friend request on PSN. its me. im Doitsujin- on PSN.

Redwing was already so kind to accept. thank you! (and dont worry i dont bother you further. im to lazy to type with a gamepad )

i'm currently lvl 42. i played as a fighter till i maxed and changed to mystic knight. my pawn was a strider and is currently a maxed ranger.
spend a lot of time with sidequests and enjoying the the world while traveling. because of this i have the feeling i'm overpowerd and should focus on the main quest a little bit more now.

it's one of the rare games where i feel more like having an adventure rather than playing a game. i just love it.

Bah! I remember that quest. It was late and I really didn't feel like doing her bidding, so I told her off and said I won't do it. I guess I'll try to find another one.

OMG OMG OMG OMG

My copy will be here tomorrow, excited to play. Maybe a bit too excited I checked Amazon for the heck of it and saw that the game was down to $49.99, couldn't say no to that price.

No worries! Your pawn looks great by the way, and it's the first rogue type pawn I've seen of all the goodjers, so I'll definitely take her for a run shortly!

Because why would I let my pawn have all the fun of being a Strider?

That seems to be the overriding reason for a lack of Strider pawns! I think many of us started with Strider PCs, I know I sure did. Although I'm a Ranger at the moment, it's so much fun I'm actually not looking forward to maxing it out, because then I'll probably feel compelled to go back to Strider to pick up the abilities I missed there. I'm interested to try out Magick Archer though, I might actually go with that after I've completed Ranger.

I saw that price, and was going to post it myself. Just need to wrap up Dark Souls...

Trying to recruit Magic type pawns with skill I'm looking for, I'd say that is pretty accurate... I see majority playing as Strider/Assassin.

Since my pawn being a tank idea failed... I switch him to Strider/Ranger and I think I should have done that from the beginning. At same time, I switch my character from Assassin to Warrior and I've been having a lot more fun.

Couple really quick tips for anyone new to DD.

A couple of the bandit types near the beginning of the game will be immune to certain types of damage you can deal. Whether this is physical or fire, you don't have a lot of options at the beginning unless you have a good mage who can buff you with a lot of different types of damage (holy/ice/fire/etc).

It took me a while to realize this because I was attacking certain groups of enemies and I absolutely couldn't do any damage to them at all. Or if I was, it was so unsubstantial that it wasn't worth the effort I was putting in.

Secondly, if you're finding the game too difficult, the Magick Archer eventually gets a passive ability that allows you to regenerate about 1hp/second. It doesn't sound like a lot, but it has been the difference between life or death on several occasions for me.

Also, once you've learned this ability, as long as you leave it equipped, you're free to be any other class and still receive the benefit. Keep that in mind if you find yourself dying a lot. It would certainly make a world of difference if you're playing as any warrior class.

EDIT: Did I type this drunk? Sheesh. Typo fixes.

I'm considering possibly looking at the box for this one but I have two questions that my skimming of this thread didn't reveal.

1) I don't plug my xbox in to the network. Will I be able to have all of my own pawns or is renting them from others the only way?

2) Is that facebook crap required? I initially saw that and didn't take another look at this game (just like GW2 and TSW). If I can ignore what they did, I might look at this but not if it's practically required.

I shall answer in reverse order.

2) What Facebook crap? Buh?

1) I haven't played without a network, but I believe the game has a bunch of pre-created pawns, in particular wandering the world, that you can hire. They end up costing Rift Crystals. You can get Rift Crystals as an item drop on occasion, but most often you get them from sending your pawn out into the Internet and having people use him. I imagine offline Rift Crystals would be a precious commodity, whereas I haven't spent a single one and keep getting more.

That's just my guess, however.

FYI: If you got Dragon's Dogma on Xbox, today you get early access to the Resident Evil 6 demo. Don't know about PS3.
