[MTG] Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013

I like the iPad interface, but frankly I think the decks are rather boring; I've already put it aside. Maybe some DLC multi-colored or more interestingly themed decks will get me playing again.

Rumor has it that the first expansion will be Ravnica decks:

Azorius - Aura Servants ( w/u )
Golgari - Sepulchral Strength ( b/g )
Izzet - Mindstorms ( u/r )
Rakdos - Grinning Malice ( b/r )
Selesnya - Collective Might ( g/w )

Someone posted this list here ( about 5 posts down ) that I guess they got via data-mining. We'll have to see how true the rumor is

No Boros? This saddens me.

Sorry to ask this ...

For someone who barely played 2011 and 2012, but is intrigued is there any reason to get it now?

In my case, it was $10 for about 6 hours of entertainment and it'll sate my addiction to magic as an alternative to spending money on paper magic or mtgo.

So, I just got to Nicol Bolas for the first time, after taking the time to work the white/black deck up to full strength.

After about five rounds, I deleted the game. I would demand a refund if there were refunds for games.

Garion: 2011 is pretty good. 2012 is okay. 2013 is just stupid. Magic has gone completely off the f*cking rails. They've been improving the engine, while f*cking up the game.

I mean, for chrissake, that late green deck is swarming with 2/1 creatures with Reach and Deathtouch for two mana. And don't even get me started on that Nicol Bolas bullsh*t deck. About the fifth round in, he cast a spell that was, approximately, "target player loses 5 life and discards three cards. You gain five life and draw three cards."

Has anyone been playing MP on the iPad? I was excited for this but once it came time to throw down the $10 I balked.

I love the interface on the iPad, but I'm balking as well. It's a beefy 1Gb, and I'm concerned that if I stop playing it for a while and delete it to make room for something else, if I get the itch to play again, I'll have to unlock all my decks again.

Actually, now's a good time to see whether it does that or not. Time to test a hypothesis!

edit: hypothesis confirmed!

Don't EVER delete your app unless you are absolutely done playing! All your unlocks will be reset!

Actually just finished magic DotP 2011 on the PC, and now I'm looking past DotP 2012 (which I know will be deeply discounted soon) to this DotP 2013. Simply don't know which iteration to get, iPad or PC. I'd actually like to play some multiplayer. Maybe like some of you here I'll wait until things get patched up and then see.

I think you'll probably prefer 2012.

Yeah, I've got to concur that the decks just don't feel as fun this time around. The "encounter" gimmick is cool... the first time, but I never feel the need to play any of the again once I've beaten them.

Haven't messed around with Planechase yet.

Also, the black discard deck seems to get lamer with each new release. I freaking loved it in 2010. It was okay in 2012, but I'd have preferred sticking with Ravenous Rats over Liliana's Specter. And now, unless it changes dramatically once you unlock more stuff, it just seems unfocused and weird.

I actually didn't really like the original Planeswalkers. Although I haven't played analog Magic since 1998 or so the starter single-color decks bored me to tears. I could not get through a single match.

Fast forward to last Friday. There seemed to be an outpouring of positivity around 2013. I played the trial and honestly, the core of it is the same but for some reason I was more patient with the pre-made decks and coming off researching and designing card game systems at work I was definitely in the mood to relive the good ol' magic days. Purchased.

Haven't got too far in. I am finding that Garruk's Pack Instinct is far and away the best starter deck. The Red deck is just miserable. Battling Garruk in the campaign with anything but the identical deck was sort of a pain.

I do not like the fact that I can't tune the amount of land in my decks. This seems like a no-brainer to me/borderline design fail. Granted this will probably be another incremental improvement included in 2014.

OK it's not a starter deck but that first White deck unlocked is pretty darn fun to play. I've always neglected the white magic ever since playing M:TG as a youngster. Probably thinking black magic was more edgy and so incorporating it into as many of my dual-colour decks as possible...

Is it possible to change the difficulty on this? I chose the middle difficulty when I started and now I wish I had picked easy because it's frustrating. I can't find it in the options.

If you go to Help & Options, and then choose Settings, you can change the difficult on the Settings tab. It goes Mage ( easiest ), Archmage, then Planeswalker ( hardest ).

I've been stuck on Nefarox in the campaign for what feels like a very long time. The green, white and the 2nd blue deck don't see well-equipped to deal with all the Exalting going on. Going to try out some of the other decks to see if I can find an effective counter.

Anyone who has this on PC having any problems with their XBOX controller? Mine crashes out the second I press the right bumper...

On an unrelated note, here is the catch-all for Magic: The Gathering. Any Magic talk is welcome! We are currently discussing the new set coming this Friday (IRL cards), Return To Ravnica!

Just got my iPad and one of my first purchases is DOTP 2013. Played the demo a bit, decided it was worth the purchase.

I don't play much in person Magic these days due to my burgeoning board game collection. And this scratches that itch, is solo playable (for my planning periods as a substitute teacher), and has some of that feeling of Shandalar.

Shandalar wasn't a game I liked very much, but I liked how you really appreciated each extra card you gained access to.

This is in the Steam midweek sale for £3.49 (or Special Edition for £7.99). Now that the dust has settled and everything; still worth it?

And if I did go for it do I need any special editions/extra content/deck packs?

This is old news, but posted on the official forums is a list of 10 codes that unlock 100 cards ( 10 for each of the 10 decks ).

Old news, but really important. Adding another 10 cards to each deck completely reinvigorates the game. When you try a new deck and win a few games, you'll have 12-13 cards to play around with, instead of 2-3. It lets you get to the game of deck customization much, much faster.

The game is on sale until tomorrow. Is the Special Edition worth it though? I'm wondering if the 10 Foil Conversions in the Special Edition are the same one that you would unlock with one of those codes.

Also, is a Foil Conversion just a improved skin for the same card? It seems like the Deck Keys would be more useful if that is the case.

So thinking about picking this up. Much multiplayer action going on with the PC version of this game?

How does the 2013 edition compare to 2012? I put in about 10 hours to each of the last two DotP games, but I feel like I've got a lot left in them so unless there's some cool new stuff in 2013 I'd rather skip it and play the old ones.

Wring everything you can out of the old ones, then move on to the new one if you still want more. It's a perfectly fine game, but it's still just more Magic.

Ok, will do. Thanks!

Can't seem to keep mulitplayer going on the PC version. I either can't create or join a game. Sometimes if I reset everything I'll be able to get a match going, but have yet to finish one where me or my brother doesn't lose connection. Based on some online research I'm not alone with multiplayer issues. I wouldn't recommend the PC version if you are buying this to play with a friend.

Probably just a firewall issue... there's certain ports you need open to make it work

Ha, that was anti climactic. Tuned up the Chandra deck with some of the promo code cards and took on Nicol Bolas after a few months of not playing the game. As cheap as he is, the guy crumpled with probably one of the worst draws in history. Meanwhile I was chipping away at him with my little Haste, pumpable fire demon. He eventually played a Sorcery that allowed him to play a card from my hand at no mana cost and he chose... Worldfire. A few turns later, I drew Prodigal Pyromancer and ended the fight. Very anti climactic.

Chandra's deck was very weak and unappealing at the start but it has gotten me past Nefarox and Bolas.

Continuing the conversation from the iPad thread:

So how much would that cost, including the $10 "unlock full game"?

The expansion has 5 multi color decks. And there are 2 deck packs of 2 decks each ( both multi color ).

Also, what kinds of lands exist in 2013 aside from vanilla? Any dual lands or anything?

But the biggest I hurdle keeping me from diving further into 2013 than the demo are the customization limitations. Decks only each have 30 unlockable cards, right, so you must choose to make a roughly 60-card deck out of only 90 cards, 1/3 of which are land? Doesn't seem very M:TG to me. Will they ever allow you to make any deck you want from the entire collection you've unlocked?

Main game $9.99
Expansion $4.99
Deck pack 1 $2.99
Deck pack 2 $2.99

So a total of $20.96 - tends to be cheaper on the PC though via Steam thanks to the sales there.

No dual lands. core decklists . Found the expansion decklist here. And deck pack 1 and deck pack 2

With the codes ( linked in an earlier post ) the main deck and expansions have 40 cards ( 30 to unlock, 10 free with the codes ). But no, most likely they will never let you make any deck you want because they want you to play Magic the Gathering Online and buy virtual packs.
