Dust 514

Ok, I will be the bozo to start this post. I went into Home and got a key to the private beta. I have been downloading the client for two days. Interested in what it will be like. Has anyone had the chance to check this one out yet?

You're not the first bozo, you can check out this thread.

Ahh, the other thread is in the MMO forum... I guess this is a tricky one to classify!

Firefall is another one that's got a thread in games and platforms. The thing is, with so many games taking on MMO aspects, how long until you just merge the two and just have "GWJ gaming online community" threads or sub-forum.

I am unlikely to ever wonder into the MMO forums to see any update to talk about 514- but I do very much want to see that conversation. I didn't realize that the game was going to be considered an MMO.

All I can say is it looks fascinating, but it's an online/mmo shooter thing on the PS3, so the chances of me ever experiencing it is only slightly greater than zero.

I do like the concept though.

It is and it isn't, that's why it's so hard to classify. It's really a straight up competitive FPS but it ties into the EVE universe and players from the hardcore space MMO side of things can assign missions and whatnot to players of the FPS. You are affecting the EVE universe but to hear it described, this is going to play more like a typical FPS. I signed up for their beta a long time ago and still don't have a key but I'm really anxious to try this out. It looks very good and I like the idea of being able to participate in the EVE universe in some way since I can't possibly begin to have the time to play the MMO in a significant way. I do wish this was on PC instead of PS3 but I'm sure CCP's deal with Sony is a timed exclusivity.

I used to play EVE but my tiny corporation crumbled and I quit. Still mildy interested in the world and what happens there. I think this game is a really neat concept.

Yeah, all of that is why I'm really interested in the game. I thought last I had heard it wasn't official it was going to be exclusive (even though people believed it would be)-- guessing I missed that that is 100%. Still, I don't think a thread about this benefits from being locked away in the MMO thread- unless it makes sense to have two active threads.

I'm really excited that it's free. That sounds like damning with faint praise, but, truly, this ensures I'll try it out, and will be fine with the results, whatever they are.

By pretty much any definition Dust 514 is an MMO. It exists in a persistent world, and territorial control in Dust 514 will affect the persistent world of EVE Online. It's basically Planetside taken to an even higher level.

As long as we can have an "offline community" too

Minus the Eve as it sounds like it could be grouped with MAG, which certainly wasn't an MMO. Could just be that I give it a different head space than others.

It is totally bewildering to me that Dust 514 is PS3 exclusive. It seems like a perfect match for the PC space, where, you know, EVE actually has some brand recognition. They are closing off a huge potential audience from the get-go, which seems like a really strange choice for a f2p game.

I'll be amazed if a PC version of this isn't already in development and ready to go when whatever deal they have with Sony is up.

From their dev diaries and comments, PC doesn't seem likely. It seems they didn't start off with a f2p shooter and then think PS3 was the best avenue. The reverse is true. They wanted to make an EVE tie-in for consoles. They came to (correct) decision that it should be a shooter, and with XBL's digital wall well known, the option left is PS3.

If it's not a time-exclusive I'll be really surprised- it'll be a huge missed opportunity (or at least seem one from my perspective).

Maybe it's less resource intensive in terms of monitoring and defeating hacks and cheaters?

I 100% believe this to be the case. It's a good point that it could work better for them as a PS3 exclusive simply in terms of management.

That's a very good point I haven't considered. I suspect it will still come on PC but maybe not until CCP can create some ninja-powered anti-cheat system which they probably could.

If they get one of those they can farm that system out for more money than game dev will yield them.

I just got a PSN voucher for the Dust beta, but I no longer have a PS3. Anyone here want it that will put it to good use? (specify for North America or Europe/Australia. Those are the two options I have to turn it into a PSN key.)

I really want to try it, but I'll let it go to someone who can love it more. I'm playing two MMO's in the near future, Tribes, and I've got SP games to last me for a long while.

Got a voucher as well but it's only good till Monday and of course, they had to hand these out the weekend I'm moving. I'm going to have no time to play it if anyone else wants to try it out.

I'll take one if they're still available. Been curious about this for a long time and I happen to have the whole weekend free!

I PM'd the code and instruction to necroyeti. Sadly it is just a weekend code like Parallax pointed out. Still, I'm still curious enough about the game that a weekend would still be worth checking out. Let us know how it is dude!

I got my email invite this morning. CCP could be a little more timely on their invites. For instance, we already know Dust is in constant beta on PS3 right now. But you wait until the second day of three to invite players? I'll at least give this an hour, hopefully Sunday night.

Download's not working for me so far. Anybody else have any luck?

Anyone give it a whirl?

Nope. Apologies to agemyth, who generously gave me his key, but I was completely unable to download the demo. =(

I played for ~30 minutes. The NDA prohibits specific talk, and probably most talk, but I will say there's definitely potential. Struck me as a mash-up of Battlefield and PlanetSide. Actually, I just remembered it reminds me more of the Frontlines MP. A little more spacial than BF, but nowhere near the open world of PlanetSide.
