Fighting Game Catch-All

I'm on. I don't have too long tonight so don't be shy.

It's the final week of Soul Calibur 5, so bring your A-game and your B-characters. I'll try to start the lobby early this Wednesday, so we can have as much time as possible.

Next week begins Street Fighter X Tekken, but this depends on the Raven projectile fix from Capcom. If that patch hasn't landed by this Sunday, I'm going to scrap SF x T and go to Mortal Kombat.

Also regarding next week, Wednesday is the 4th of July, so I think most US players (myself included) will be busy. I suggest we move Fight Night to earlier in the week, does Tuesday night work for everybody?

I think I can do Tuesday next week.

I haven't followed SFxT at all recently - has that rebalance patch dropped yet? Also what Raven projectile glitch? Is that different from the Rolento one?

My bad, I meant Rolento. The infinite patch has landed, and it brought the Rolento projectile freeze with it. AFAIK the fix for the Rolento bug has not come out yet, and I'm not going to dedicate a whole month to a game that locks up whenever projectiles collide (especially since we have regular Rolento players in the group).

I'll be on tonight. Someone bug me on Steam if I forget!

I'm going to be a bit late, but I'll be on as soon as I get home.

SirJoe and I are on now, come one come all.

Yeah... I forgot. But I blame you guys for not reminding me on Steam!

I'll try to be on tonight.

I tried, sent you a friend invite and everything. You didn't respond. No friending, no messaging, no reminder. Ergo, it's YOUR FAULT!

I won't be on tonight, but I'm going to try and get on Saturday.

I was in bed by 10:30PM! I'm an old, old man.

Sorry I couldn't make it on Saturday, things just didn't open up for me.

So we're into July now, and Street Fighter X Tekken has NOT been patched (at least not that I can find evidence of). However, the only person (singular) who has shown up consistently each week is SirJoe, and he told me he's been anticipating SF x Tekken, so I'm going to go forward with that and just ban Rolento. So here's the deal for this week, since it's 4th of July:

Tuesday @ 7:00 PM PST
Rolento banned, if you pick him we will haze you in voice chat
If we get 4 players, we'll do some 2v2 and we can even try the all-out battles (those were fun last time).

Next week it'll be back to the usual Wednesday @ 7:00 PM PST.

I forgot about the holiday, so I won't actually be able to make it Tuesday or Thursday this week. Maybe Saturday.

FYI - SFxT has indeed been patched: link

OK, good to know. Then SF x Tekken for July it is. Tonight at 7 PM PST.

EDIT: I'm making the lobby after I walk my dog, so 10-15 minutes.

Stuck around for half an hour, nobody showed, but that's what I expected. I'll try to be on Saturday, otherwise see you all next Wednesday.

FYI, this weekend is EVO, and tomorrow is the finals for every game. Not only that, but this year the entire event is being streamed from their website, and you don't have to pay a cent if you don't want to. Worth watching if you're at all interested in fighting games.

Evo's been epic! Top 8 for SF4 is nuts and some amazing players like MarlinPie are out already for Marvel.

I seriously cannot believe they have Aris casting the finals of EVO 2012. Incredibly poor form after what happened mere months ago, that's truly disappointing.

I turned it on, saw him, then turned it back off. f*ck that guy.

Yeah, me too. It's no wonder the fighting game community has problems growing beyond what it currently is, the people putting on these events really need to grow up.

EDIT: dumb question. Follow-up...got nothin'.

I checked back in for SF x Tekken (starting now), and Aris is gone. It's now ultradavid and rapeet casting, so a big step up.

EDIT: SFxT is 2v2 in this tournament, first up is Mike Ross + Combofiend vs... two other guys I don't know. This should be fun to watch.

Seeing him on stream at all pissed me off, so I just put it in to the solo mode and only watched the main stream. UltraDavid, James Chen, Magus, and Skisonic have been putting in great work on commentary so I'm happy to watch. When there's been a woman player on, they've been incredibly respectful on the whole, which made me happy. The stream monsters... not so much, despite the $12 entry fee sadly. I still feel like it's an improvement, but the community has a long way to go.

Wow that's pretty unfair. The guys who put their money, heart, and soul into the biggest most professional fighting game event ever are being summarily dismissed as immature? I'm pretty astonished.

I'm no Aris apologist, but not only was this entire Aris thing blown way, way out of proportion, it was six months ago and as far as streaming goes, was an isolated incident. Aris issued a public apology and has been essentially suspended from doing any sponsored streaming for six months. Putting him on stream shows that the FGC has the capacity to forgive (24k viewers at 8AM EST) and put the past behind them. If that's not growth and maturity, then you really need to stop expecting us to turn into Starcraft eSports overnight. (PS, the only community that can be like the Starcraft community is Starcraft. MLG FG streams have been doing a pretty good job at proving that, what with the godawful misunderstanding of what makes fighting games awesome.)

End rant.

ANYWAY, I just got back from EVO and I've got to say, as a first-time goer I'm pretty sure I'm going to be budgeting to do this every year. Watching a stream is nothing compared to watching the live matches on stage, visiting the vendor booths, playing DIVEKICK, and playing the best Street Fighter of my life in pools.

I'm not, nor have I ever, summarily dismissed anybody, and I'll thank you to not presume so. I'm observing that a man who said overtly sexist things, while representing a professional organization, is representing that organization again. That's not growth, not if the memory is still fresh in everyone's mind.

By apology do you mean this statement? That's the dictionary definition of a non-apology, he came out and said "I'm sorry if you were offended by what I said". Would you feel better if he had offended you, and then said that? I highly doubt he would have said anything if this hadn't turned into a huge PR issue for both Capcom and the event organizers.

You clearly have your stance and I clearly have a starkly different one and neither of us are going to budge on either front.

The reality is I just got irked at the reaming on not just Aris, but the people putting on these events considering how much work went into this event and ultimately turned out to be a gigantic success despite bad blood between Aris and parts of the community. I still think your comment was unfair, but I apologize for my presumption.

I apologize for generalizing. I was pretty miffed at the time, and I know that Aris does not represent the community, nor the EVO organizers, as a whole. It can't be denied that what he does and says reflects on the community and the organizers though, and that really needs to be considered extremely carefully. I think he should have been kept out of the event, but that's the only point I take issue with.

Getting back on track to the spirit of the thread, I'm set to be in lobby on Wednesday & Thursday for some matches, but I'm afraid that 7p PST is 10p EST i.e. the time that I go to bed every night to be up in the morning for work.

I'll try to be around Wednesdays & Thursdays between 5p - 7p PST (8p - 10p EST) if anybody wants to play some games though I recognize that with the time difference, it may not work out.

Bishop, when are you getting your 360 back? Rejoin us!

Shoryuken just posted all the grand finals matches from EVO 2012. Soul Calibur V in particular is worth watching, because that is the best Tira player I have ever seen.

I have it but it's packed up. I'm moving this weekend.

Pumped for P4 next month. Hopefully, people are on playing regularly for awhile.
