The Binding of Isaac

Does anyone know if you need to get all the Challenges as well as all the items for the Platinum God achievement? Or do you just need all the items?

Also what about the 3(4?) hidden achievements?

Do it again man.

+1

So, I know some folks think it's cheating, but there is a wiki. I didn't start using it until after I was very familiar on my own with most of the items. At some point it's just too difficult to keep everything in my head, and the documentation was helpful in making decisions on what to pick up on my runs.
It will probably have answers to your questions about achievements and challenges. I'm reluctant to use it for that purpose until I'm absolutely stuck.

Yeah, I did start using the wiki as an item reference once the item combinatorics got out of hand. I try not to use it for new items though.

You can charge every shot, but there is no shot.

Yeah I saw that, it has some broken interactions with some other items.

EDIT
Re: wiki
I haven't used it since the expansion. I think at this point that I'm grinding cathedral runs I will go back to occasional wiki usage because there are so many items.

Got my Eve Cathedral run done. With Ipecac believe it or not. Final build was Ipecac + The Wafer + Book of Shadows + Nun's Habit. That run felt great to get done.

So I've decided to pick this up but I'm not sure what to do about Wrath of Lamb. I'll buy it regardless, but should I only buy/install after I've played vanilla Isaac for a while or just put it on there right away?

And is there a consensus on x360 controller vs keyboard?

I don't reckon it matters

I use a mapped 360 controller, it's loads easier than using the keyboard. YMMV

I don't think it matters. Maybe play through a handful of times just to know where vanilla is coming from, then get the whole thing.

I used a joypad when I first started playing, but found that the keyboard was well tuned enough for this game since it only has directional shooting. Plus for power ups that require you to hold down the fire button, it's easier to hold down a key on the keyboard than a stick on the joypad.

I have the movement mapped to the left joystick and the shooting mapped to the X,Y,A,B buttons. Best of both worlds.

Although as mom's knife can be fired diagonally it's worth mapping the right stick to fire as well as the buttons for the rare occasions you get mom's knife

Ah interesting idea; I will have to try this out. Although I just thought of another reason to use the keyboard -- it's much easier to switch over to the wiki

For me diagonal movement is most important when it comes to the controls and that's just not as easy nor responsive on the keyboard as it is with a stick. YMMV obv.

And at this point I'm not really using the wiki enough for that to be too much of an issue.

Can't play it yet anyway, too much slowdown. I didn't think a goddamn 2D game would be final straw but there you go.

I'd actually play vanilla for a while if I were you. That way you can install Wrath of the Lamb to freshen things up when that starts to go stale and, oddly enough, I felt like the items were more random in vanilla even if there were fewer of them (see: Jesus Juice on every single goddamn run).

Weird isn't it?

Also I've now had Brimstone a couple of times and found it broken, so boogle appears to be right.

Eve cath down. Now just a samson satan to go!

I've been wondering about this. Is it a bug or something?

I think there are quite a few bugs introduced in WotL.

Looks like there's another patch in-bound at some point this week (today or tomorrow?)

Also, credits are going to get updated at some point

I hope this update somehow makes Samson possible for me but I'm not holding my breath!

Credits update makes me happy. I have a weakness for credit rolls that show all the enemies/characters.

Better get my last couple of challenges done before that drops then!

Must finish purist and do damage cheevos for caves and depths.
I must.
This game has moved beyond entertainment.
This game has become compulsion.

Controller all the way. Here's a post I wrote way back when on how to configure Joy2Key for BoI.

You can't close a spoiler tag with a quote tag, DanB! YOU'RE BREAKING THE INTERWEBS

Meant to post this yesterday. I found a pretty cool explanation on reddit behind the different themes and characters in this game:

Basically it gives Issac a backstory, explaining that he once had an older sister named Maggie who passed away, causing his grief-stricken father the leave the family. Eventually, Issac's mother goes insane, and Issac is left to fight through his own guilt, sins, and depression about the whole ordeal, resulting in either his suicide or self-acceptance.

Anyway go check it out. It's pretty deep, and even more remarkable considering the way that Edmund draws from his own life for game concepts.

All characters sheol and cathedral runs done and all challenges complete! Managed to complete Purist on my first attempt! Got to get all the items now. 11 achievements left according to steam which means 8 hidden achievements to get.

I didn't really manage to get my shot strength up very much on my Purist run. In the first level I managed to buy The Nun's Habit and later in the depths I picked up My Little Unicorn. I was hoping for the Book of Revelations, to have a limitless supply of soul hearts. Nevertheless, with the habit and unicorn I could kill most of the bosses pretty easily, as any time I was hit twice I could really take out the boss. And I could use that pairing to rinse out the blood machines in any casino. Still, killing the final boss came right down to the line.

Spoiler:

I've yet to get to the final hidden level, so I assume that 6 of the hidden achievements are for completing the hidden level with each character in turn

Only 2 items in the collection left to go

Spoiler:

I've completed one of the hidden/secret Chest levels with Isaac! Whooo. Just tried to do it with Maggy assuming that it would be like 'It Lives'/Sheol where if you killed the boss it would be permanently opened for later characters. But it's not the case, you have to be carrying the polaroid with every character. Gah!

I deeply admire anyone who has beaten the game even once. I'm having a great time with it, but I do suck. I think after nearly 15 plays with the expansion I have yet to get to the fourth level. I really thought all the fecal "humor" would be more off-putting than it ended up actually being. What a fascinating design.
