MechWarrior: Online - Catch all

Loving MW and loving MW multiplayer are 2 different things.

While the MW multiplayer was consistently fun against friends, multiplayer against the general public was frustrating.

Piranha games is going to have to be on their toes swatting down exploits and giving viable counters to things that are legitimate tactics in theory yet end up exploits in practice.

You know thats a fantastic point. I absolutely loved the story lines and playing single player MW and also playing w/ my friends but I joined like 1 or 2 public games and didnt like it at all. So, is THIS game just pure PVP?

It is, but it's all deathmatch. Download and play World of Tanks; if you like that, this shouldn't be too far removed.

Except that an SRM-6 or small laser is still a viable weapon system in MWO, whereas a 57mm cannon can't hurt an Tiger II.

Not that I'm in the beta or anything, but it isn't all deathmatch. There are different game modes. And from what I've heard, the way they are balancing mech customization is through hardpoint management. They stay true to the design of the mech, so if a hardpoint was originally occupied with a ballistic weapon, that type is all you can replace it with. In addition each location limited to a specific number of hardpoints. So if you take off an AC/10, you might be able to replace it with two machine guns but not a PPC. It's an elagant solution, to me, that allows customization but prevents people from creating silly configs like putting 6 flamers on a Jenner.

True. One more advantage in MWO I'd say.

For those in the Santa Clara area, you might have a chance. I saw this via the Massively site.

Post from the MWO forums:

Hello All,

New to GWJ forum. Looking at this game seems to be the type of game i'm looking for. Any suggestions on reading material besides their website?

Thanks

Do you mean information about the setting? The unofficial Battletech wiki has a lot of stuff.

Thank you, this works well.

Looking forward playing this game.

Makes you wonder how they're going to handle omnimechs

I suddenly became very interested in reading through this post to see which GWJ people were not in the closed beta.

In unrelated news, my user name for every game I play is Squee9.

I'm still on as Certis is anyone wants to friend me up. I haven't played a ton so I don't burn out before they finish adding everything.

It's been interesting to see how the game changes as they incorporate more features.

AFAIK, all we can say now is that you're in the beta if you're in the beta. It sucks, because there's a LOT I wish I could talk about the game.

Which I am. Name is Cube.

SpyNavy and please let there be a GWJ Merc group, if not I will organize one. Loving it.

Appreciate that, old bean! Will monitor.

To expand a little on Certis' comment, I think the actual combat is awesome. But there has to be more, which we really haven't seen yet. Mechwarrior has always been as much about the story as it has been about driving around a 60 foot tall walking tank. It is such a flushed out universe. They have only recently incorporated an experience tree so you can improve your pilot's "performance" in addition to modifying your mech. But aside from that, and the "mech" mechanics, it is currently like any quick match online shooter (CS, Modern Warfare, etc.).

To be honest, I have no investment in the Mechwarrior universe, so I'm most interested in the F2P structure. If it's just a good combat game that allows for good teamwork and strategy combined with fun action, I'm interested.

I'm probably in the minority on this thread, and I realize it. I'm looking more for a fun game than something honest to the canon. The game would draw me in and might get me interested in the universe.

NDA is still very much in effect, to the point of not admitting whether or not you have access.

I'm dreaming of Chromehounds 2... Will this do?

I think so.

Not in the beta, but I really need to know what if anything this game will have besides clan-match battles. If it's got group (and ideally some solo) PvE content, I'm all in. Co-op would be awesome, and much more my style. But so far I haven't seen anything that tells me what this game will have besides PvP content. And given the successful F2P equivalents (LoL and its ilk), I imagine that PvP is all it'll have.

I believe that only PvP is currently planned. More info on their site. I do think it will spawn calls for a new SP game.

From what I gather, there will be some faction stuff, but all of the combat may be against other players. Not sure how faction combat will affect the greater universe.

Best comparison from what they're showing is World of Tanks. But with Battlemechs. So XvX arena style team-based combat.

The good part is it being F2P, there's no reason I won't try it. But if there was some co-op and some single player content, I'd probably have given them $60 already. That's how excited I am for the possibility of a good mech game.
