Crusader Kings II Spirit-all

They are very different kinds of games. I happen to really like both and think there is more game in CKII than the civ expansion you should make sure you like it before you get it.

Do you like any other paradox games? EUIII, HOI, Victoria?

Never tried them. I have heard alot of good stuff about CKII and am familar with the basic consept as well as the shortcomings. I do not mind working as long as the experience is good.

I agree, more game in CKII.

I try to keep 500 in reserve once I've gotten past the first couple of decades in the game.

And my reserve goes up the bigger my realm gets. At the end of my Flanders/Valois game I was keeping 1500 in reserve. Of course I was pulling in 30+ per month.

Seriously enjoying The Prince and the Thane mod. I heartily recommend checking it out.

I need this game. When's the next sale?

Almost certainly when the Steam Sale hits.

Tell them I'm ready for the sale to start.

Me too. Not buying it is like having that delicous cookie on the table and not eating it.

It was just on sale for 75% off, what, a week and a half ago? Keep your eyes open, it's available for cheap all the time.

Yeah, but I was busy then.

Silly wordsmythe, don't you know how we do here? You buy it and put it in the pile for when you're NOT busy, which is when you play something new instead and then complain about how big your pile is.

Thanks for the interview! I am happy to report that Crusader Kings II is still doing very well and the future looks bright. We have planned the next four expansions in some detail, and I think people will be pleased with the subject matters!

Emphasis mine.

Sweet.

I know, that's pretty exciting. And the release date is "sometime next week" for SoI.

I can picture a number of expansions, each with their own different familial systems; maybe "Middle Kingdom", "Plains of the Indus", "People of the Sun" and, I dunno, maybe Africa, or North America.

"People of the Sun"

Well, I know what album I'm listening to next time I play.

I hope they do something with Pagans in an expansion similar to what they are doing with Muslims in SoI. I also hope they beef up religion in an expansion; religion in the game now does not have much impact beyond crusades and jihads, with the occasional excommunication tossed in.

In any case I can't wait to see what else they will do with this game!

This is the best game I'm not playing. Stupid sleep.

MORE AARS!

Hmmm. Yeah, I could see North and South American Indians together, with the Pagans stretching from Eastern Europe to the borders of China. That could be fun.

I'd love to get hold of the design team's reading list.

That is (or was) a fairly common feature included in the backs of board wargame manuals that I agree would be great to see included in a readme or other references section in a PC game like this.

The last two episode's of Dan Carlin's Hardcore History have been a little better for me thanks to this game.

Maxis used to do an entire back section of the manual on the basis behind their simulations. I think the SimAnt one was longer than the manual for the actual game.

I had a fairly in-depth knowledge of the period before, but actually playing through a dynasty really gave me an emotional understanding of what was involved in the decisions that people were making.

Whoa. Thanks for the pointer to this podcast. Thanks to it I actually didn't mind mowing the lawn this morning. Ha.

So, I'm playing as the King of Poland, and there's a lone county in Kiev that's De Jure part of one of my duchies. I declare war on Kiev, and manage to take control of a number of counties within Kiev, but they always show as "Occupied by Poland," never part of my Kingdom. Is that just because of the fact that we're still at war, or is there something I need to do to annex them?

You'll gain it when you make peace, and choose 'enforce demands' or whatever the option is that isn't white peace or surrender.

Thats right. Things are only occupied during a war, they switch over when peace is made. If you declared war for that one county, no matter how many others you take you will only get that one when you enforce your demands.

There are some exceptions, like wars with infidels but it is really all based on your reason for war (casus belli)

Also, in my own game I started as a count of Thours and the third generation is now the duke of Burbon. Next step is to get some more counties and then try for King of France!

I've started a game as an ultra aggressive France with the goal of seeing how much of the world I can blob up. By hte death of my first ruler at age 70 he had conquered three quarters of the iberian pennisula and won the crusade for Jerusalem.

I rarely see the French AI push for iberia, but after fabricating a claim on Navarra and taking it I had a border adjacent to the muslim states which I could gobble up at will with my holy wars.

The second ruler's objective is to finish off Iberia and push to take Brittany, Then he may look to Ireland, because I suspect once he has a few provinces there the rest will accept vassalisation.

Having very good fun times now with this game. I think I just needed the time to sit down and play a good, long, reign.

I took control of the King of Poland in 1066, who at the time was a young man of 19. I've been slowly building up upgrades in the demesne, improving the garrisons, levies, and incomes, and gradually expanding the territory. It started with a few baronies in southern Lithuania, but I've also taken Danzig and a few other territories - the Romava tribes are a little preoccupied with Danish and Swedish invasions, so I wait until they've sent all their levies out to help the northern neighbours fight off a holy war, and then declare one myself and jump on them from the South. Seems to be working so far.

By far the most interesting thing I've done was to marry the Mathilde of Toscana, an unmarried Duchess who seems to have controlled about half of Italy. She died after 10 years of marriage, having given me 2 sons and a daughter. The sons appear to be fighting over Italy at the moment (Gavelkind succession) and the daughter got married off to the King of Denmark. I am curious about what happens when the King of Poland finally kicks it - as far as I can tell, he'll be King of Poland and Duke of Tuscany - but he's a vassal of the HRE through Italy - does that mean that Poland will get sucked into the HRE too?

I *think* the Duchy of Tuscany will become part of the Kingdom of Poland (assuming he wins the duchy). I'm pretty sure that he will *not* be a vassal of HRE since the higher title is not a vassal title. CK2 won't allow (unless this has been addressed in the latest patch that I am not aware of) one title to be held in vassalage and one in not (nor one person to be vassal of two different people; CK2 likes neat orderly org charts ). If this is the case though, watch out! HRE will have a CB for getting that duchy back.

Either way should be interesting. Please post back and let us know what happens.

This sounds fun. I haven't played one of the larger states yet, maybe I will give this a try.
