School bus monitor tormented by students... Edit: the affirmation of a society

This popped up today as a news story on my Facebook page. Greece is a school district out in the Rochester area, not exactly what you would call "the hood". The verbal abuse this woman takes is really hard to listen to and is simply unimaginable. The language used, along with the viscousness is both frightening and sad but mostly, it just invokes anger. If you read the story under the video it's even more painful as one of her children committed suicide and these "children" didn't realize that. I know I sound like an old man but damn, if you had done this when I was a kid, one of our teachers would have slapped us unconscious.

What makes the story even more interesting is that the video has now gone viral. The names of all of the children involved have been released along with their parents. Internet avengers have gone so far as to post links to their FB pages, their parents FB pages, their addresses, phone numbers, their parents employers etc. I'm usually the first one to say we need to protect the privacy of children but these wannabe gansta's need to be fed to the wolves. It appears that they're about to realize the power of the world wide web.

Here's the Pastebin with all the juicy tidbits:

sounds like bullying is crossing the age barrier.

Yeah I got through 90 seconds of that garbage before having to turn it off. Something tells me I didn't miss anything.

Revolting.

Well it's made it's way to Mashable and there are reports that the names have been given to the animals at 4chan. If the punks thought they were bad ass before the animals at 4chan are gonna have a field day.

It also appears that the school district will be taking action and the Rochester police are considering charges. It also has been reported that $10,000 has been raised to send Ms. Klein on a vacation.

Welcome to big boy land kids!

I like the second reaction much much more than the first one. I really don't think feeding 4chan's need to harass people will do any good.

To quote the movie God Bless America, “Why have a civilization if we're no longer interested in being civilized?" Hopefully these vermin and their parents learn something from the real world, which has no reason to or interest in tolerating their crap.

I don't disagree, especially considering 4chan is not known for limits, human decency or even normal behavior!

You are both right. Its just hard to muster any sympathy in this case.

Wow. Just wow. These kids are going to get two big spoonfuls of e-fury. The Internet has raged hard for a lot less.

I know by now I am a broken record but... there is ALWAYS a bigger fish.

I don't know what recourse she had at the time to try to stop their abusive tirade, but I just have to say that her patience and politeness in the face of that filth is incredibly admirable. I certainly wouldn't have remained as polite as she was.

My dad is a school bus driver for a similar district. There's little to no recourse at the time, since even touching a kid will probably get you suspended, and written discipline/banning kids from the bus only works if the administration follows up (not likely if little Jimmy's dad is on the school board or knows someone in the district office).

He says the new onboard cameras on buses are the best thing that ever happened to drivers.

Since it was four kids, she could have done this (all directions from monitor's perspective):

1. Place left hand on left side of first kid's head
2. Place right hand on right side of second kid's head
3. Quickly draw both hands together in a clapping motion
4. Repeat steps 1-3 for second pair of kids

Step 5: apply for night shift at local 7-11 since she would be suspended instantly, then fired with little recourse and blacklisted from other districts.

It's an impossible bind.

I know. I've just been in a vindictive, cut-and-dried mood lately. Despite my better reasoning, I sometimes feel like there must be a threshold for certain behaviours beyond which a solid punch to the head is socially and legally acceptable.

I refuse to watch that video so that I can continue to find that typo hilarious.

Cry havok! And let slip the fursuits of war!

the one - the ONE - positive effect, is that the Internet has raised triple this poor woman's salary in 24 hours.

Not worth it. This woman is my mother, my aunt, my coworker, my sister, my friend. Cash compensation is not acceptable.

This is where some good-old-fashioned asskicking delivered by the kids comes into play. I may be speaking from experience.

Honestly, 4chan is a pit of scum and villainy. But one can hope the thorough emotional beat down will either put it into perspective, or make them afraid to do it again. With assholes like that? I'm okay with either/or.

Two cliches come to mind. First is that people like that rarely understand anything less than force or intimidation. I have seen this many, many times. Sometimes a point to a bully has to be driven home with a black eye.

The other cliche is the whole "He who fights monsters..." thing, and so you really do want to be careful with that. In the case of the video? Someone knocking the brats heads together would do far more good than harm.

It's a shame that this woman had to endure this abuse. I'm sure she never envisioned becoming famous for it. She's on every major network this morning and check this out:

DONATIONS UPDATE: $110,000 raised as of 3:00am Thursday.

Not only is she going on a vacation, by the time this is over she'll be able to retire.

I can't watch that video, I know it will make me too angry and ruin my day.

I also hate to think of condoning Internet justice because it's cruel and unusual, especially from the 4chan cesspool. But as someone who was bullied a lot as a kid and who can't stand seeing good people get ruined, I can't feel bad for these little pieces of sh*t. I hope they get some humility driven into their brains. I don't care how old you are, you can learn very early in life to be a f*cking person.

I often wonder how I would handle this or how I would handle my son being tormented like this. Part of me wants to go all "papa-bear" on their ass. For myself it would be to teach them respect and fear. For my son, simply to defend him. But I know I couldn't do that because I would be the one to end up in jail. Hell, even if I yelled at them and instilled some fear I'd probably be arrested for assault.

That's the problem. While there are tons of laws restricting what teachers/adults can do to students there seem to be almost no laws on the books for student actions against teachers. A couple of my friends are teachers and they tell me, at least in a few schools around town, it's not unusual for some teachers to get mugged a few times in a single year, for students to pull knives on them, punch them in the middle of class, vandalize their cars, etc. It goes far, far beyond simple vulgar speech. Even when assaulted the teachers aren't supposed to retaliate or they lose their jobs and face possible criminal charges. The schools solution, at least in these cases, was to hire off duty police officers to patrol the halls and classrooms so that the threat of possibly being caught by a police officer would deter the students. As for the students, if they do get caught then generally, at worst, they're looking at being transferred to an "alternative learning facility".

Teaching is worst than murder so they had it coming.

In Maryland, the moment a student lays a hand on a teacher or administrator, all school rules are off. The adult is allowed the full recourse that he or she would have if otherwise assaulted, as I understand it. Of course, that opens them to the same liability afterwards that they'd have in a fight with a minor, but basically they'd be allowed to prevent harm to themselves or others and then they'd have to stand back and start again from the neutral situation.

I know of many cases in Maryland where students were forcibly restrained and even arrested for becoming violent with other students or teachers or administrators. They do get charged, they do go to court, and some end up in jail.

Disruptions tend to be verbal in nature as a result.
