Ascension (iOS) Gaming League (New Tourney starting Jan 14, 2013!)

Only reason I asked is that I've seen previous discussion of "the person who goes first gets to ..." and "if you're second, you're usually playing defensive..." and so on. I admit I'm not yet good enough to strategize to that level, but if people talking strategy thought it was important, I figured I'd ask.

I think the game assigns who goes when randomly, regardless of who invites.

Also, I assume the "scores" to be reported are "I won 2 games out of 3", not our individual scores for games...?

Ah, OK, then I guess it doesn't matter.

I've been "rematching" the same 4 people since I got the game, basically, so it's been a bit since I started a fresh game.

One of the other Ascension Challonge brackets I was looking at recorded the individual scores, so it may be worth going ahead and doing for posterity...

And in Ascension, when the score is "tied" at the end of the game, the program awards the win to the person who went 2nd(?)? We should clarify how those are handled in the tournament rules as well. I'm assuming the highlighted score on the results page is the winner, but it may be worth a rematch...

Highlighted score is the winning score, so in case of a tie the second player is the winner. Feel free to enter your scores in reporting. All that is required is the winner.

OK, I just wasn't clear that we could "report" on the same bracket entry 3 times, for the best-of-3. I obviously didn't want to just try one to see what it does, in case you can't undo.

I hate this. I lose a lot of matches this way, oddly.

It happens quite a bit to me in SoS, not so much the earlier sets. I love it though, don't even mind losing that way; I can often look back at some tiny mistake I made that cost me a point earlier anyway so the loss is really my own fault. Going first is indeed anywhere from a slight to a huge advantage, 2nd needs something. About the only time I steamroll someone experienced in SoS is when I go first and get something like Nihilmancer+Abolisher, they get nothing, and it's just over.

I really enjoy the games when I play 2nd and end up having to go the military route as my opponent got an early decent rune card and I just barely manage to clear the honor out before his rune machine of doom takes over completely. Seeing that tied score star highlighted for me is lovely. They're often the games I feel I played best.

For those of you who don't have byes, anyone having trouble initiating a match with their opponent? I've started my match with oily (I'm convinced he's crushing me already) and am about 6 rounds in.

Other than servers being down the last 8-12 hours no issues, cyrax and I about 1/2 done with first game. I have an early honor advantage and some monsters to kill but he had Raj and just got PRIME, so the score could swing in a hurry if the cards are unkind to me. With 20 some players and best 2 out of 3 format with double elimination, this'll be going on a while, definitely need to keep it moving.

Thecouncellor and I are getting a few turns in a day. We're playing Hero Academy and a 'vanilla' Ascension at the same time so prompts for one feed into the other.

For some reason Ascension has decided I no longer deserve turn notifications, hopefully that clears up. Anyway, I'm checking on a regular basis.

Mudbunny and I just became GameCenter friends. Turns out we're both a bit shy.

It could turn around fast near the end, but I think you have a pretty good lead with honor. This game turned out monster rich, which is what you went for, and you've been getting good draws to that effect. I did pick up Emri. Really happy about that because the cards came out right with me being able to place a discard atop the deck.

I've been taking screenshots, which I'll put up later.

I'm still waiting on Justin Fletcher to reach out. Guess I'll take a try at being the lead dance partner

I've been playing a few turns a day against him in a "fun" game so he is active. Maybe just not checking the forum.

Man, I wish I had the card draws in my league game that I'm getting in the vanilla one I am playing at the same time with Thecouncellor...

Loving this setup.

I love the league setup too. I just wish I had an active game at the moment!

Oh, and I predict I will be participating in a similar Tournament with DOTP2013, if they have sufficient online-play capabities (read: async!).

edit: who am i kidding? I'll play in a DOTP2013 tourney even without async. In fact, async play may actually drag a tournament on longer than a game that does not have async play....

And I just accepted the game. Sorry for taking a while. I was expecting a push notification, but apparently the game doesn't do that anymore.

I think whatever servers they use to send those out are down. This has happened before.

Is there a thread for that game yet?

Magic DotP 2013 thread is here: http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/1...

Damn, lost first game to Oily 72-69. Key play was when he banished the Hedron Link device I would have easily acquired from the middle and won. Curse you and your meddling ways!

Won the first game against Cyrax 88-55; the game never really gave him anything cool to do with his Raj or Prime, just more monsters; even after killing em all game I think there were still 5 in the center row at the end.

Damn it. Didn't check the board for a few days and missed this. Oh well. Next time.

Yeah, I think that's the most monster heavy SoS I've ever played, and also the most boring. At least I tried. The mountain didn't move much, though.
