Is NY5 reasonable at this point, in terms of day/night cycles?

So Rocket tweeted this morning that in the future "having a hatchet will be a very good idea" and "not just for chopping wood". Methinks melee is coming! Start me with that instead of a Makarov and I'd be happy.

Also, he's acknowledged the food and drink spawning issue, looks like another hotfix will be needed to fix that.

I think so. Plus I'm ready to get away from the clan assholes on US 16, I'm pretty sure they are the ones who killed several of us in NW Airfields Friday night. On a funny side note it looks like they lost a bunch of their tent loot since the server went down without a prior warning.

I wonder what people say about us.

I'm probably gonna sit out until 1.7.1.2 is out, between the framerates and the bean wars I don't think I'll make it off the coast.

An interesting story from yesterday...

I'm wondering around Elecktro with my newly found Remington shotgun (with flashlight!) looking for more ammo and food when I see a guy run into a shed about 20 yards away. I slowly sneak up to the side of the shed and tell the guy over direct chat "I'm friendly, I'm armed, if you try anything I will blow your head off with this shotgun." About 10 seconds later I see him very slowly come to the door of the shed, he tells me that he's also friendly, unarmed, and without food. I give him 3 cans of beans and we decide to team up. A few minutes later we find him a Makarov on a dead survivor and head to the church in Elecktro.

Once inside the church we hear a faint voice coming from the super market across the road. He's asking us not to kill him and telling us he's not a threat because he's unarmed. We look out and see a guy standing in the window of the super market with a flashlight, we promise not to shoot and he joins our party. Our next stop is an apartment (or office?) building. We head upstairs and are going room to room looking for supplies when we all three hear "Don't shoot me!" I can't see the guy but I ask him if he's armed and he says yes. We then spot him across the hallway in another room and a 30 second or so tense standoff ensues. I tell him that I won't shoot him and if he betrays me my friends will "blow his f*cking head off in a New York minute." He agrees and joins us. So now we are a 4 person party who less than an hour before didn't know each other at all. We are all talking about how amazed we are to meet this many survivors who aren't killing each other on site, cutting up with each other, and generally having a good time. I ask the first guy I found in the shed the question "Honestly if you were armed and had seen me before I saw you would you have killed me?" He tells me probably because there he's died too many times from bandits and he doesn't like to take chances anymore. I tell him I appreciate his honesty and we move on.

We head downstairs in the apartment and are walking out the door when we see a survivor running past the doorway with about 10 zombies chasing him. I yell out to him over direct chat that if he runs towards the apartment we can help him. He is in a state of panic and is trying to make is way to us but is having a hard time because I suspect he's injured and bleeding badly. I decide to play the role of hero and jump out the doorway into the street with my Remington shotgun. I quickly dispatch 4 or 5 zombies that are running past the door way and then what happened next probably looked like a wrestler getting clotheslined as a zombie runs past me, never checks up, and knocks me unconscious immediately. Meanwhile my new found friends are still in apartment fighting off zombies coming from a different direction and my direct chat isn't working since I'm unconscious. I yell out in vein that I need help, but it's too late I watch as 2...3...4...7 plus zombies huddle around my body and begin eating me. I only hope my new friends were able to survive and get my loot.

I have a feeling this exact experience is what Rocket was intending with the no weapons spawn. When your only tool for survival is communication you will learn to use it effectively.

I can understand it. There's only so many times you can get an M4A3, 1911, and ALICE pack and then sit around trying to figure out what to do next. A game without a goal means the players have to make up their own and there aren't really many interesting ones to choose from.

Apparently it's already being worked on. May even drop today.

We are going to set up camp in the same spot as US 16 right? Seems to be an awesome spot for people traveling from the coast and going out on hunts.

I've noticed a lot of the people in other communities that bought ArmA 2 for DayZ are now playing some Insurgency mod and having a blast. Any one played it before and is anyone interested in playing it? Not saying we have to dump DayZ just a change of pace sometimes.

The modding community for Arma 2 is big. There's some great co-op maps and scenarios out there,

It's also very simple to create missions and fool around in the editor; it's available under "Single Player".

With the new update i think going to town for bandages and supplies is an interesting goal. You HAVE to kill zombies now. Its almost impossible to go totally stealth toward a goal now. I went from 20 zombie kills to 90+ in just a couple hours. I was as low as 2.8k health at the worst and bounced between 4k-8k the entire time. Trying keep what you have and keep it topped off is a hard goal now.

Yes, the spot for the camp is a very good one, and surprisingly well concealed (I never see the tents until I'm practically stepping on them).

Let's find a new home server, and ideally one that's more central like US 16 was. NY5, being east coast, didn't have the greatest of pings for players on the west coast.

Yup.

Sniped at the north east airfield. 1 bullet kill, no idea where it came from.

Bluh

First order of business... I'm back to doing the southern walk of shame. SD M4 was awesome with the new changes. Especially combined with NV. I could drop any zombie that came within 15m of me and continue happily on my way. The problem was: ammo. The server got into habit of eating my clips. I was down to 2 clips left. Making it to the NW airfield cost me most of one of the remaining clips. After looting Stary, southern barracks, 7 hangars, and the fire station, I still had no additional ammo. 30m from the northern barracks, I got 3 silenced bullets in my back and that was all she wrote.

To add insult to injury, while staring at the "You Are Dead" screen, my wireless router craps out. My router basically rage quit for me, since I didn't really feel any rage myself. Decided to take a break after that.

Didn't one of the patch notes mention that you can now put tents just about anywhere? We might want to put them inside some treeline.

Sounds like a plan. Can't wait to dig back in with the new patch and increased co-operative community feel. God, I love DayZ: this is exactly what I want a game to be.

Next mission for me: find a truck, get it working, and branch out to somewhere remote to start thinking about a more permanent base than our tent-city. Maybe the distant outskirts, like Olsha? I haven't explored up that way, and setting up a base would be a fun side-goal.

The weapon choices in this game are peculiar. How many models from base ArmA2 and how many were made from scratch for the mod?

Winchester 1866: This archaic lever-action was already a bit out of date by 1886 when John Browning developed a lever-action strong enough to handle rifle calibers. And now we find tons of them scattered all over the Russian/Eastern European landscape? Plus the game describes them as 12 gauge shotguns when they were actually pistol-caliber carbines. You'd expect to find Winchester 1895s because a massive number were made just for the Russian Empire.

Lee-Enfield: Also known as the "smile" (SMLE - short magazine Lee-Enfield), it was the workhorse of the British Empire for decades. But as far as bolt-actions go, it would make a lot more sense to find Mosin-Nagant rifles.

Revolver: A Taurus Tracker model (.357 Magnum/.41 Magnum/.44 Magnum), but labeled as using .45 ACP ammo for some reason. Except almost all .45 ACP revolvers use moon clips and the revolver in this game is shown using speed loaders. A simple fix would to just change the text to say it uses .357 Magnum.

Machine guns: Not a single Russian/Soviet machine gun?

I don't know if I'm totally off the rocker here, but I think that he's only using certain modules from the original game. I read somewhere that only private contractors and british army models support backpacks. So that's why he's using only those. Maybe the weapons come from only those modules as well.

That's what I suspected. Since I haven't played any base Arma2 or its expansions, I don't know anything about their content.

With all the server issues and hotfix issues, I haven't logged in for days, so I'm still parked at the camp site, presumably with all my gear intact (AKM + 4 mags, M1911 + 3 mags, and some other odds and ends). If anybody wants an escort from somewhere near the coast, I'm happy to come help, but only after all the patching is done. I'm with Stylez, wait for things to calm down and then head back in.

Quintin_Stone wrote:

The crossbow, Lee Enfield and Winchester are made from scratch I think. Not sure about the CZ550 and the Revolver.

All the military (e.g. M4, M16, DMR), Soviet, and British weapons are from Arma 2. The game itself has hundreds of different weapons and vehicles, you only see a tiny fraction of them in Day Z.

The ACE mod adds a huge amount of new content in terms of vehicles and weapons as well.

Also, can someone PM me the location of the hidden southern base? I won't be using it (am on a European server), but I've been hunting around for a decent spot to pitch tents in the south for some time.

Although the new patch helps tremendously with finding concealed tent locations.

I've actually played a few games of Domination over the weekend. The latest ARMA 2 beta patch improved the performance quite a bit, though I'm still bottlenecked by my CPU (Core 2 Duo E7200 @ 2.9 GHz). Haven't felt the need to upgrade until getting back into ARMA, now considering going i5.

Ultimately I think the game should have some sort of extremely-difficult-to-achieve endgame goal.

It's a multiplayer FPS roguelike. And the hallmark of a roguelike is having a difficult goal, and trying over and over again to reach it, getting a little further each time. And once achieved, it becomes a story, a personal gaming legend of that one time where every decision was the right one, and every bit of luck went your way.

Most importantly, the goal need not interfere or detract from the sandbox. It's there if you want to chase it, ignorable if not.

A sensible one given the setting and theme would be some sort of "escape the island" scenario.

How the hell was US 16 a central location? We've got at least 3 active Canadian players that I can think of off the top of my head. Somewhere like Chicago would be nice though.

Although I bet US 16 was good if you lived somewhere like...hmm..I dunno...Austin?

? Isn't Insurgency a HL2 mod? (If it is, we tried getting it going before, didn't get much going, but I'd play. Fun game, but good lord the community for it is horrific. Makes the LoL and DOTA communities look like a pack of kittens)
