Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion

I've been dabbling in Rebellion single player the last couple nights to get the hang of it, as well as to try to knock the rust off. A lot of the changes are only revealing themselves as I play. It's good stuff though, definitely a good step up from the last version. :)

Single player? SP campaign? That'd be great.

Nah I think it's still just vsAI games.

I'll be on this saturday hopefully before 1 but i might be pushing it a little after 1 by 10 or so mins.

If we start without you its only because I didn't want you to steam roll me
I am really looking forward to this weekend though I would love to play with you guys before then.

It's not a campaign really; more just that you can pick maps and AI's to play with, and then go to town. I find it effective for learning the basics and experimenting with the factions without the pressure of anybody "watching" me.

I find the AI much better than in the earlier versions. Anyone else agree?

I worked up to it but finally beat a large map with full complement of normal AI. I ignored diplomacy (I let the pirates do that for me). Next time I want to try it w/o using pirates so much. Spamming that pirate button feels a bit like leaving a bag of flaming poop on the neighbor's doorstep.

Feel free to shoot me a game invite if you see me playing.

Unfortunately I forgot that I have to do something on Saturday at 12:30pm PST. Given that our games usually take 4 hours I will probably skip this week.

Jam3 is easy to beat. Just make sure Nimcosi is on his team

If I join in the Saturday game (which is quite possible this week) what time do we need to show up?

Also, if we're using the GWJ Vent server, I need to figure out why I can't log into it.

[edit] Also Part 2: fair warning that I really suck at SOASE versus humans (just like any RTS), despite how fun the game is! So if we're balancing the teams out, um, consider me one of the low-point-value guys.

I will be there at 11AM (1PM eastern) sharp.

This wiki is gonna save my life.

I'm untested, but I have a feeling I'm right there with you.

I'm scared out of my mind. I'm building all the time, letting no resources stockpile and expanding like a mofo. I gotta be keeping up with the AI on this small, random map. Right?

Depends on how much time has passed. If your enemy planet scouting is recent, I'd say you're doing quite well, and it's time to build up a fleet with a couple cap ships and a good balance of frigates (couple dozen maybe), and maybe a few cruisers if you can afford it, and go kick their ass.

Yippee! Finally.

Damn all of you. This talk made me start a game of Entrenchment this afternoon and waste a good 3 hours of my life. :p

I really enjoy sins but have the same problem with it as I do with other RTS games. Not being very good at them. With practice I can always work out a strategy to beat AI's but against humans I inevitable fail. I understand that a good fleet or fleets are vital to winning so in one game I'll concentrate on quick expansion, ship building and upgrades only to have my colonies taken over. In the next game i'll concentrate on defence and my fleet won't be strong enough. Doing both seems to lead to both being too weak. I don't seem to be able to work out a ballance. I play as TEC and try to harness their economic strength with lots of trade ports.

Even so I really love this game and won't stop playing. Oh and add my name to the list of people who would love to see a single player campaign come out.

Welcome to the club! I definitely love my strategy games, but I am definitely lacking in the "being awesome" department. That being said, I definitely love me some Sins, but I just can't seem to figure out what I need to do to be successful in a game aside from a small map with one AI. I think the majority of my issue is that I just don't play it enough. I saw a few pages back that Strangleblades posted some links to a wiki and strat page, so I'll check those out.

Actually Strangleblades, whenever you want to test out your MP chops, let me know! We can play an awkward game of Sins where we both don't really know what we're doing, and eventually one of us wins by sheer luck

This is my problem too.

The additional issue is that I love turn-based because I like to be able to think and react, whereas the pressure of real-time is actually very stressful to me. I may love a lot of RTS games, but that's because the fun aspects of them manage to counterbalance the stressful and difficult aspects.

I'm also terrible at true multi-tasking, which RTS gaming requires. If I'm dealing with economic trouble, my military starts to get neglected. If I'm dealing with combat, my economy gets neglected. I just can't juggle all these things appropriately.

And don't even get me started on the huge challenge of trying to micro-manage units in RTS combat.

So yeah; when I like an RTS title, I like it in spite of its genre, not because of its genre.

I think you misspelled his handle. It's actually "Blanglestrades". At least, according to Coldstream.

I should be good this weekend after my work. I'll drop a message here tomorrow.

How does a MP game work?

Well when at least 6 or so goodjers have gotten to know each other pretty well, and they have special feelings for one another, they get together on saturdays around one p.m. est on ventrillo and give each other a "special hug" that lasts for about 4 or 5 hours. Once it's all over half are happy and satisfied and the other half is dissapointed and devoid of self-esteem.

That sentence matched with your avatar..*shiver*.

I guess it isn't for newbies then

Game is in set-up stage. We're on Ventrilo and forming up in "Nimcosi - New" on Ironclad Online.

LOL Okay, that was one of the best responses I've read to a question so far.

Just got home from playing a round of golf with my dad that went...less than ideal. Looking to destress and hop into a game of Sins--at least I know I can have an easier time figuring this out then figuring out how to keep my shots relatively straight

Big shout out to The Complex for buying me a copy of Rebellion. Looks like I'm going to have to learn how to play again.

Hope the game went well guys. I might even be available next weekend!

Got through my first 1v1 AI game against a normal opponent (me as TEC v Vesari) on Random - Small. Honestly didn't really get that good of an idea for the mechanics as I never really had to worry about the AI being too aggressive and there wasn't much in the way of coming up with a strategy aside from colonizing a planet/asteroid, building whatever mining facilities I could, then moving on. Didn't have to worry about pirates until about midway through when I started taking my eye off if I was being targeted or not. Was surprised also by how successful I was without paying too much attention to research aside from upping the fleet/cap ship cap.

All in all it took about 3 hours to get the match over and done with--and really that was only because I had my main fleet running pirate defense for the last hour or so. Once I figured out I could build a bunch of factories in every system, it seemed like the match just boiled down to making a mass of frigates (supported by three cap ships--levels 5,4,2 by the end) and throwing them in systems. Pretty sure there's supposed to be a little more to it than that, but I still got the victory either way

Think I'm going to try to play on an even smaller map, possibly Point Blank, in order to get a more pressured situation instead of basically being left alone for the majority of the game. Might up the difficulty of the AI as well just for an extra challenge.

Overall though, I definitely enjoyed the game. Especially once I figured out that increasing planet infrastructure does wonders for making income LOL
