Upcoming Indie Games to Keep an Eye On

Blockscape: Minecraft-style sandbox game with blocks of multiple sizes and angles and better default textures. Edit: You can pre-order for about 10 Euros.

I get the how, but I'm not really seeing the why.

That did make me laugh

For those that have played the Krater alpha and beta, how is it?

Not sure about NDA, but I meant to get back to it this week after only playing the first week of beta. I didn't even see much content, so I couldn't give a solid opinion anyway.

I played it a couple months ago when it was in a very alpha state. As it stood then, I felt the game kind of removed your agency from the fights since all three characters would attack enemies automatically and you only really controlled their special abilities. I didn't really like that. I think I was hoping for a control scheme more like Mass Effect where you have a main character that you control and two companions who will attack on their own but whose special abilities you can also queue up for cool combos and such.

Rock Paper Shotgun just posted about StarForge. It's free to play and currently available, so I don't know if it really counts as 'upcoming'.

If the shooting bores you, skip to 1:48 or so and keep watching.

That's a really early build. From what I've read, it's nowhere near being finished.

It does look amazing. So much potential.

Yeah, I'm going gaga over that. Probably will wait a few builds though.

After spending more than an initial moment with the Krater beta, I feel pretty confident in saying that this game could be really solid. It oozes personality, much akin (though no strict similarity) to Magicka. Maybe because both developers are crazy Swedes.

The graphical engine powering the game looks to be fairly substantial for a top-down RPG like this. It looks really great, and it's complemented nicely by a very clean and cool art style. I haven't played much, but the gameplay seems to be very meaty, and I think it's mainly supported by an all-inclusive crafting system. Not sure how it works, but you're apparently able to make everything in the game, including the skills and abilities your character will use. Really interesting stuff.

I'm a little surprised it's coming out in little over a week, but I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Just gave it a try. I'll come back when it's further along and much more usable.

Agreed. I took the plunge to see what it's like. There are some problems with gameplay, however. Mouse clicks aren't registering on skills in combat and I'd like to see a pause button for offline. They have disabled so much in the beta that it's difficult to get an understanding on certain aspects. Enemy difficulty can suddenly ramp up and with encountering 6 guys, no pause, and skill activation not registering that's a quick death. There also needs to be a lot more in game documentation. Very little is explained.

You're right, that's the main issue right now. It's also part of why I'm surprised they're releasing in a week. Hopefully they have all these changes on an internal build.

Yup, and I was surprised to see that, too.

Gnomoria - Another graphical Dwarf Fortress-like, similar to Towns.

You can pre-order for $8 to get access to the alpha. There's also a demo.

Hostile Takeover

Presented in a third-person isometric perspective, Hostile Takeover will be a throwback to classics like Fallout, X-COM and Syndicate. You will control your character in a real-time environment, sneaking around corporate buildings and avoiding security guards before dealing a final deadly blow to your target. As you progress through the game, new equipment will be purchasable for the money you make.

Yes please.

Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice

It's probably a little gauche to talk about projects you're personally involved in in this thread, but I'm helping some nice dudes on something really cool. It's called Gone Home, and I think it definitely falls into the categories of 'indie game' and 'things to keep an eye on'. The Fullbright crew down in Portland are behind it, and if you like exploring about, Rock Paper Shotgun did a nice piece about it.

You're helping Scoops, then? Nice. I'll get around to Minerva's Den just before Infinite releases. I was looking forward to playing it this year, but no, Ken needs more time to implement MP.

That is sarcasm, internet.

I am! They were up this weekend for a visit. And Minerva's Den is great, in this the internet's not one to lie.

Some more gameplay.

I'd love to see a detailed impression of the release version of Krater.

A heads up to anyone thinking about picking up Krater: There seems to be plenty of issues with it at the moment, as evidenced by the Steam forum. It might be a good idea to wait a bit to see if things get fixed. Also, assuming this post is accurate, co-op won't be in the game for another month in case anyone was interested in playing it that way.

Walter, a platformer using fluid physics where you control a blob of water that can change to and from solid form at will. Due to release in 2013 on Steam, XBLA and PSN.

The indie game I'm most looking forward to is GunPoint. The puzzling looks like a blast in this.

I also have to concur with the poster above, I've been really addicted to indie games lately and can't get enough of them.

Yeah, I just came across Walter and immediately thought of posting it here. They're a team made up of castaways from Eden Games, the Test Drive guys who had reported unfair treatment from Atari a year or so ago.

Here's two others I saw posted on GT that have a lot of promise.

Ninja Crash look like a Smash Bros arena game, but it's hard to tell what's going on because of the unusual physics.

Forge is described as being very PVP focused, with MMO-like combat. It was just announced, and not much is known besides this pretty interesting post.

. It looks great

Good news. Conlan's Claim recently recieved a grant and will be moving to full production!

Sounds like an updated version of the Break-in portions of the old Sid Meier game "Covert Actions". Played the sh*t out of that game, they really need to bring it back via GoG.com.

Not much talk about Gnomoria. I picked it up this weekend though and have been having a lot of fun with it. Anyone else playing it? I need some defense tips and maybe some guidance on hunting down metal. I haven't found any so far.

Good ideas and implementation. It maybe a while before release, but they have my attention.
