Non-game Android Apps Recommendations Catch-All

I have been using Tasker for quite some time and it is totally worth the money for an amazing and useful app.

Trying to decide if that will be enough to help extend my battery life on my new GNex or if I should still get something like Juice Defender in addition to that, or if maybe JD is good enough by itself?

Juice Defender works quite well on the Galaxy Nexus. I used it for quite a while with no hassles and a lot longer battery life.

I use Chrome on my wife's OG Transformer and while it's nice, there are annoying rendering issues that keep it from being something I want to use every day. It seems to forget it's in the middle of rendering a page and just hangs at a white screen forever, or will just display the visible section of page and if I scroll, it takes a few seconds to show up.. Stuff like that. I have hope though..

Came across Exquisite Droid and Android Niceties, two sites that showcase good looking Android apps.

I bought Doggcatcher because Pocket Cast has been getting wonky and unstable on my phone lately. Man, Doggcatcher has a horrible unintuitive UI in comparison. It just doesn't make things easy.

Chrome got updated this week. Still no flash.

But the weird zoom issues I was having, with this forum and some other pages, seem to be fixed now. It was zooming it on landscape mode when I didn't want it to, and anytime the screen locked and I went back to the phone. Now seems to work correctly.

So I finally installed the Chrome beta on my phone. (DInc w/ CM9 ) I don't know what's broken about text formatting, but I *love* the way the forum reads. Post text size is normal. All other text, and images I think, is really small, just barely legible.

Well that's enough to have me give Chrome another spin. Pretty nice. I actually have a browser specifically for GWJ (Opera) because the site doesn't really play well with Dolphin Mini or the default.

Anyone tried out on{x} yet? Past the stupid name (I hate those brackets) and the fact that it requires a facebook login, it seems to be a more intuitive version of Tasker. Pretty slick, given the 20 minutes or so I've screwed around with it. Lifehacker crows about it here.

It's in beta and does require a FB account, which seems to be the reason for 99% of its bad ratings on the Play store.

Yeah I think when it gets google account integration people will start reviewing it on whether it's actually good or not.

Wonder if it will be a google account, or if it will be an MS account...

How does stuff like OneNote work?

one nice thing about it is it integrates nicely with presto, which gives you audio speedup with pitch correction. The dev is pretty responsive as well.

Both can be said for Pocket Cast, too.

I think my phone may be getting some corrupted files or something. It's having stability issue with Launcher Pro and Swype as well. Probably need to reload the ROM.

sounds like I should try pocket cast then.

Yeah, Pocket Cast supports Presto, and the devs have responded to multiple emails of mine and are helpful.

I just prefer the queue management of Pocket Cast. It just makes more sense to me. Doggcatcher probably can do more stuff, but I'm not sure I want it to do more stuff at the cost of making simple stuff more complex to figure out.

Still giving Doggcatcher a shot for a bit longer. It is more stable with my headset controls for some reason.

I really like Beyond Pod, for what it's worth.

Epic. A triple post.

=(

So does anyone have any idea when HBO Go will work with ICS?

So, since I'm pretty new to the world of Android: what's everybody's current go-to security program to locate your device in case it gets lost or stolen? I've seen recommendations for Phone Locator and the reviews seem fine, but there's an abundance of similar tools out there. Do they have any significant impact on the energy consumption of the phone when active?

Also, if you're a somewhat tech-savvy user, is it still necessary to install an anti-avirus app?

Thanks in advance!

The reviews on Google Play seem to say that it did as of the May 4 update.

SeekDroid is the one I use, in conjunction with LookOut. The latter is an anti-virus solution that's never given me problems, and SeekDroid is really, really easy to use. It has a nice web interface and allows remote wipe, location, phone ringtone activation, etc. It's $2.99 on the Play store, though I think I picked it up through the Amazon Appstore for free awhile back.

I too have SeekDroid, though I've never used it. So I have no idea if it actually works.

I have "Honey can you call my phone?" It is a nice app. I have also used Google voice to call my phone when my wife was not around.

I don't know if this should be in game or non-game (so I'll do both!). Official Xbox Live app

I haven't lost my phone, but I've tested the GPS functionality and phone ring tone stuff before. Seems to work pretty well. Last I checked, you could even type a message to display on the screen so you can give the person who finds it information on whose it is (or yell at the dick who stole it from you).

Same for me.

Forgot I even had seek droid. Glad this topic came up. Hadn't reinstalled it on my new phone yet.

Looking for a good (free) current weather app. I don't need a forecast, I just want to see what Temp/Humidity it is currently. Multiple location support would be nice too. Doesn't have to be a full app, a widget would would work beautifully. The default one on my DX does well for the Temp but, doesn't do humidity.

I like Weatherbug for a full app. I paid for the "Elite" version and I guess I also got it at some point from the Amazon app of the day, but I think the free version is the same just with ads. Otherwise I'd look at either Beautiful Widgets or the new hotness, HD Widgets.

The free versions has less widget options. I think it's the wide forecast widget you lose. My wife has free, and I have the full from the Amazon free app deal.
