Boxing Catch-All

Sad that we don't have a boxing thread already.

Well, one nice thing about ponying up for HBO is getting to watch some fights again. Watched the probable end of Bernard Hopkins' career tonight.

Chad Dawson clearly won most rounds. Hopkins struggled to mount any offense. Yet, it was impressive how little damage Dawson was able to do to a 47-year-old Hopkins. Dawson connected on nearly 50% of his power punches and Hopkins hardly had a scratch. Hopkins' defense was something to watch, even at this stage in his career. Even when connecting, at no point in the fight did it appear there was any threat of Dawson doing any actual damage to Hopkins.

I love boxing but the judging is so damned corrupt now I care barely watch it.

That was a theme in the commentary of last night's fight. "Dawson is winning this fight handily, but with the awful judging we've seen this year, what's really going to happen?"

And one judge inexplicably scored the fight a draw. The other two scored it a sensible 117-111, rendering the majority decision.

Once again the judging comes up in the Pacquiao fight this weekend.

And of course there will be a rematch.

I remember the last fight I actually watched from start to finish. 1999 Lewis-Holyfield. Lewis dominated the match and then there was that split decision, and rematch a few months later. I've never since, and probably never will, watch another fight.

That was my first boxing match that I watched from start to finish. My in-laws are Filipino, so whenever there's a Pacquiao fight they order it and have a big party for all their friends. We we swung by after in time for the match (and barbecue).

And yeah, I'm confused. I don't know much about boxing, but it sure looked to me like Pacquiao won.

As I read on the Web the next day, maybe Pacquiao should have tried throwing less powerful punches and landing fewer of them.

I lol'd.

Watching Vitali Klitschko fighting in Moscow really makes me miss the Cold War.

Great set of fights tonight for those that have HBO. Chad Dawson vs. Andre Ward main event.

If you're a sports fan and have HBO and you didn't watch that night of fights, shame on you.

Ward was something to watch.

Since this is mostly the *Legion* Talks to Himself about Boxing thread, might as well post the GIF that I can watch for hours:

Chavez Jr vs Sergio Martinez for the middleweight title tomorrow. Unfortunately I'll be stuck at a wedding
