Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen Catch-All

Went outside Gran Soren the other day and a flying lion thingy (griffon, I guess?) was having his way with some goblins. I tried killing that bloody thing, but only once did I get it down on the ground. Tips and tricks? I've tried targeting the wings, but the bloody thing just refuses to go down.

Fire works well!

This one is afraid of fire!

(Also, climb on its back and stab it between the wings... particularly with fire enchanted weapons.)

Fire, lend me your kiss!

Hm... need to switch up my pawns for that I believe. I think the mage I am using has ice / lightning boon instead of fire and my Magic bow doesn't use arrows. But that makes sense. Thanks!

I have a Pawn etiquette question when it comes to using a Pawn of someone on your Friends list. So I've been using Zero's pawn Penny. She is level 50+. Since Zero is on my friends list, it doesn't cost me anything to use her. Every so often I'll dismiss and re-summon her, so she'll get whatever new gear Zero has equipped her with. I haven't sent her away with anything since the first time I used her, because at this point Zero is so far ahead of me, I don't have anything worth sending her away with. I feel bad, because I don't have any good gear to give her. I always give a good review and say how she did. Am I a bad person for not sending a gift?

Send her back with a human skull. Zero'll get the message.

Don't. You need those later.

Don't. You need those later.

Heh, indeed you will.

No need to worry about it at all, Rocky. I actually still get RC points even though you don't pay to hire her, and as you surmised I don't really need much in terms of items. What's more, I think I MIGHT actually be close to putting the game to bed, although there is a bit more that I want to do in New Game+ first, but once I do call it done then I'll have even less need of gifts.

Actually, that brings up a good point: Currently my pawn is less that optimal, since I haven't reached the point where I can change her class in NG+ yet, and for some reason you can only choose from the starter three when you get your pawn even in NG+. As such, she's currently a mage rather than a sorcerer and thus isn't packing the best attack spells (or my best weapon for her either). Anyway, hopefully I'll get that sorted back to where it should be when I get home and it will once again be safe to rehire her.

(Although I'll still not have the best possible weapon for her, thanks to prematurely moving on to NG+ as outlined in my spoiler post above.)

I try to send off stuff such as trinkets I don't need or a health potion. Everybody needs health potions. Or kindle. Or a rock. Or a bucket.

Okay, Penny is a sorcerer once again, and once gain has her 1300+ magic attack weapon equipped.

Oh, if I had only stuck around long enough to get the best staff for her before moving on to new game plus...

Has anyone tried out the DLC weekly quests?

I plan to eventually but I already have so much content to work through, I don't really see a point in buying them now.

I did buy the weapon pack and was disappointed to find that my level 8 character already had something better. Given, my level 8 character's better weapon was fully upgraded and the weapons in the pack weren't (and they're pretty expensive to upgrade) so maybe that'll change in time, but don't buy that pack expecting an instant boost in power.

BTW, the picture for that pack is kind of misleading. It shows three weapons but there's actually one of each kind, including various shields and bows.

I think I redeemed and downloaded the pack you get if you reserve the game or whatnot, but I couldn't tell you if I actually got it. I've just been playing the game as is.

Nope. The game is so packed with stuff to do anyway. If I finish the game and I still want more, I'll pick up a couple of the quest packs.

Serious advice here: If you play a Mystic Knight, do NOT cast Holy Glare anywhere in sight of friendlies.

I picked this up this week based on the talk here and have been really impressed. What a terrific game. I have a few of you guys in my Friends list (Xbox) and have been employing some of your pawns. I took out Puffin (Lobster's pawn?) last night for a trip into the Witchwood and she did a great job. Since she is close to my level, I will keep her in my party for a bit. I promise to take good care of her :-). One aspect of the game they really nailed is atmosphere. I went into the Witchwood at night and I heard something very large stomping around in the dark but never ran into whatever it was. The feeling of dread when you are in darkness and your lamp runs out of fuel or gets wet is pretty intense. I went down in the well in the opening town without doing enough prep and found out the hard way that having extra lamp oil is kinda important.

I appreciate that, jakeleg. Puffin's a big girl but she has abandonment issues.

Yeah, the first time I entered the Witchwood I heard something stomping around as well. I've returned there a second time, but haven't explored much to see if I could find something huge. Wonder if I should do that? I hope it wasn't merely a scripted event to get you nervous the first time. It would be more effective if you replayed the game later, but knowing what was out there was powerful and best to avoid. Would keep that low-level fear, so to speak.

I've yet to run out of oil in my lamp. If it gets wet or something, I just put it away and then pull it back out and it works well.

Same here, but the clunky menu system makes that kind of a pain.

Especially when Lizard-men and poking you with spears.

Says Blind_Evil.

Tonight: two ogres at once, three helmed cyclopes, and a chimera.

More importantly, I came across an old fort taken over by an all-female band of thieves. They told me to take off as I was a man. I'm curious what their response would have been had it been an all-female party - less hostile? Potential new quests? Who knows.

Even more importantly, after they attacked and my party made short work of them, we rummaged around the fort to find some silk lingerie in a chest.

That's right: very soon, one lucky pawn is going back to their master with a fancy pair of panties.

Coming into this thread at full skim... I don't have a single friend on my PSN account, and uh... I kinda like it that way, it's nice being able to hop on to the PS3 and know I'll have some time to myself. Is there any point in playing this without any friends?

Eh, friends aren't essential for this game in the slightest. It's fun to be nice/be creepy with friends' pawns now and then, but there's really not much point to it gameplay-wise. You'd be just fine playing with pawns belonging to total strangers. Remember, they're just party NPCs spec'd out by other people. It's totally asynchronous and unobtrusive.

Redwing, I don't know about other PS3 owners, but I don't bite. I don't send messages to friends. In fact, I barely acknowledge their existence.

But their pawns are rather nice.

Heh, maybe it is time I started getting chummy on PSN, although I'll admit I don't have the slightest clue how to go about doing so, which proves how much thought I've put into the concept.

I'm curious how many people here are lovers of Dark Souls (which I'm back to playing now). They seem to have somewhat similar art styles, both are action RPGs from Japan, you can actually die in both...

This. I think Aristophan and Frederik_S are the first people from GWJ, and that I do not know in real life, I've added to my PSN. I've also only interacted with other players via the pawn system from Dragon's Dogma.

I got myself a headset for the PS3, but...now that I think on it, I don't even know where it went.

Ok, I've played the demo and followed the thread, today I bought the game! Was actually quite hard to find a copy at a retail store, hopefully it's selling well. Now I'm looking forward to a sleepless night!
Just as Redwing I have no friends on PSN, so I'm doing a round of requests, hope you don't mind! Anyone else is welcome to do likewise, I'm il dottoreALT on PSN. I don't bite either, and have no headset

Awesome, il dottore. Let us know what you think of the game as you get several hours in. Obviously we're all in love with it, but it seems quite the acquired taste - you really have to like killing monsters, apparently.

I was finally browbeaten into picking it up, and it didn't annoy me in the first hour or two, but then I was distracted by something new and shiny.

I am hoping to getting around to playing it some time this summer, though.
