Pencon 2012

I so so soooo want to be able to come to this! I was already determined to try to attend Pencon this year, but now it's in a freakin' castle?? I really must work this out. I'm already in talks with my prospective dog sitter and am hoping to be able to make it happen. This is just so cool. Teneman, thank you for buying us a castle.

I never learned to play magic as a child.

Ok, I'll allow bath salts but if someone smokes them and then eats someone else's face, you're gonna get kicked out, sorry.

Oh, speaking of, what is the smoking policy, exactly? I don't smoke cigarettes but a pipe or cigar is nice from time to time. Is there an area outside and/or inside where this is acceptable behavior? (Sorry if this was mentioned already and I missed it.)

I hope so. We can smoke our manly pipes and talk about whether Jerry will cross the channel before Christmas.

All cabins and nearly all rooms have balconies upon which smoking is accepted. And of course strolling the grounds makes for a nice cigar smoking setting as well. Smoking indoors on the other hand, is prohibited by law. It also results in a pretty hefty smoking charge to cover all the extra cleaning and replacing of linens, etc. in order to make the room smoke-free for the next guest.

I enjoy a good cigar myself, and have always been interested in trying a pipe, so I'm quite likely to join you out on the patio to blow a few smoke rings.

Wouldn't think of smoking a pipe inside. I can honestly say I've only ever done it once, and it was overwhelming. I'm an outdoor very occasional indulger. I'll bring you a pipe Teneman. I have some "spares" I keep clean. Clean in this case, means an opportunity to break out the scotch and soak them for a bit. And while the scotch is out ...

Yeah, I smoked a cigar inside once to celebrate my buddy's kid being born. We sat by the fireplace with the flu open, we'd been told that would keep the house from smelling. Boy was that wrong.

Enjoy the scotch, I may have to pour myself a finger or two as well... And thanks for bringing the pipe, I look forward to it!

Huzzah!

I now have official wifely approval to ditch the family for a weekend and head back to Ohio. Now to be one of the first 60 people to catch the ticket information on refresh.

You soak the pipe in scotch? I really need to try a pipe one day then.

Apologies, as I was off-site for much of the last few weeks. What *is* the deal with reservations and such? Are we sorting them out internally like hippies?

Please, please read the last few pages of posts.

If you're reserving days *other* than Friday or Saturday, do it on Teneman's website & PM him the res info. We're still waiting on the reservation info for Friday/Saturday, but it'll be through the PenCon folks directly.

Oh and we were wondering if we could get the gang back together and help more gypsies that have no money and want to send us in to the past to fight demons, etc.

Yeah. Zenke, you have 5 months to prepare for the party to try like hell not to be heroes and to take the path of least resistance. You have been warned =)

I just had my plan for cheap flights fall though, so it looks like my wife and I won't be able to go.

:*(

Kickstarter?

Trains technically work, but I've found they are usually very close to plane tickets in price. Boarding a train is much less of a hassle than boarding a plane, but you make up the waiting time when your flight takes 2 hours to get to NYC instead of 10 hours. Planes win that one.

Buses work too, but depending on how far away you're coming from you may spend more total time on a bus slash at a bus stop than at Pencon. Also, traveling with a family by bus for long distances can be a disaster.

Sarcastic hooray for American public transportation.

I hope you miraculously find another deal Stengah.

I'd be coming from Maine, so it'd be quite a trek. It'd just be my wife and I, possibly just me if we had to take a slower form of transportation (as my wife would have to take even more time off from work). Taking a train looks to be out, it doesn't look to work out to be any cheaper than flying (it'd require getting a hotel in Boston). Taking Greyhound could work, it'd take just under 24 hours to get to Columbus. Though they're priced better, they'd still be twice what the plane tickets would have been.

As a gaming nerd, I have one notch that is completely missing from my belt. I've never played D&D. Any chance of this happening during Pencon?

certainly a chance, sure. We'll see who wants to run something and then we'll have sign-ups for those spots.

Im happy to run some RPG stuff. It's rare that I'm going to something like this and not hosting or organizing, so I'm looking forward to just actually gaming!

I am going to bring my DnD stuff in case a game breaks out. I have the 4.0 books, though most of my groups use the online character builder now so I don't have to buy all the other books to get access to the feats. You know, if anyone has some DnD minatures they want to trade, I will have mine with me. I have a few duplicates I would love to trade (all are the plastic new ones, not the pewter ones).

Surely there's another GWJer between Maine and Ohio you could meet and pool?

A handful of dumb questions:

What's the occupancy per room? A few of us in IRC were talking about rooming together.

Likewise, how does that work with PenCon tickets? Are the tickets per room or per person? If, say, SallyNasty and I are roomies, are we splitting one ticket or buying two?

Has there been any talk about doing any sort of shuttle to/from a specific airport, or is the plan for everyone to do ad hoc carpools?

We have no solid structure for how rooms will work out. It's a hot topic amongst the PenguinCon staff, and we'll have something solid shortly. Believe me, we're as anxious to get things moving as you are. We need to start taking people's monies rather soon.

What is this if business, you tease!

Yeah, I get this is tough to organize. For my part, I plan on having enough people to fill the room I have reserved for Thursday/Sunday, so I'm just hoping there's some sort of "self organized" option for attendees.

There should be no worries on that count - there was a google doc last year.

Ok, with some help I think I've stumbled on how to do things. I want to run the plan by the staff one more time to work out a few details but we should have pricing structure and sign-ups starting this week.

I will say that everyone will need their own ticket. We're just not sure how much each ticket will cost yet and what the pricing options will be.

Oh, and a big thank you to everyone who completed that survey. It was extremely helpful.

Edit: And Sally, if you cancel on me again this year, I'll hunt you down.

I have wife approval, and the money. Also, wife is not expecting within weeks of PenCon this year, and there is no plan to change that!

I think she would murder me if we had a baby in 2012. We had one in 2010 and one in 2011. I think she is lilnastied out for the near future (perhaps for all time!).
